Prior to the BCS Championship game, Byrum commented on the possibility of having to attempt a game winner:
"When I went home for Christmas, all of my friends asked me, ‘What if you get to do that?’ It’s been pretty cool to think about it. But, hopefully, it won’t be needed, that we’ll take care of business. But if the time calls for it, I guess I’ll deal with it then."
After the game, he commented on the reality of having kicked the game winner:
"This has has been such a long ride. It couldn't end more perfectly. It's unbelievable."
