Draft Preview: Wes Byrum

Among the kickers eligible for this year's NFL draft, or signing as an undrafted free agent thereafter, is Auburn's Wes Byrum. He ranks in the top ten in the majority of the various draft rankings.

2010 Senior Season
  • Became the leading scorer in Tigers history: Byrum broke John Vaughn’s record with an extra point and then a 42-yard field goal in the second quarter of No. 5 Auburn’s game against No. 6 LSU
  • Against Kentucky, kicked the game-winning field goal as time expired in Auburn's 37-34 victory
  • Kicked the game-winning 19-yard field goal as time expired to give Auburn a 22-19 victory in the BCS national championship game.
2009 Junior Season
  • Named Lou Groza National Semi-Finalist
  • Named SEC Special Teams Player of the Week; Named Lou Groza Star of the Week (10/5)
  • Against Tennessee, accounted for 14 of team's 26 points hitting 4-of-5 FG attempts and a pair of PAT's ... The four FG's made and five attempts were both career highs
  • Against Northwestern in Outback Bowl, connected on a 21-yard FG in overtime that proved to be game winner ... The 21-yarder was only FG attempt of game ... Also hit five PAT's and averaged 66.0 yards on six kickoffs with one touchback vs. Northwestern.
2008 Sophomore Season
  • Hit both FG attempts vs. Southern Miss including a career-long of 52 yards
2007 Freshman Season
  •'s Freshman All-America Third Team
  • Second Team Freshman All-America Team
  • Sporting News Honorable Mention Freshman All-America honors
  • Nailed two game-winning field goals both with less than 30 seconds remaining on the clock and both on the road ... 
  • Named SEC Special Teams Player of the Week (Oct. 1) after booting 43-yard game-winning field goal as time expired in 20-17 upset at No. 4 Florida ... Had initially made kick, however, Florida called timeout prior to the snap, forcing Byrum to make the kick a second time
  • Booted 20-yard field goal with 21 seconds remaining at Arkansas to give Tigers' a 9-7 win
High School
  • Kicked 79-of-91 kickoffs for touchbacks and connected on 74-of-75 extra point attempts his senior year
  • Converted 11-of-15 field goals including a long of 48 yards in 2006 ... Ranked second among kickers by and
  • Selected to play in the Offense-Defense All-American Bowl.

2010: 17 of 22 (77.3%) FGs; 72 of 73 PATs; 123 points
2009: 15 of 16 (93.8%) FGs; 54 of 54 PATs; 99 points

Prior to the BCS Championship game, Byrum commented on the possibility of having to attempt a game winner:
"When I went home for Christmas, all of my friends asked me, ‘What if you get to do that?’ It’s been pretty cool to think about it. But, hopefully, it won’t be needed, that we’ll take care of business. But if the time calls for it, I guess I’ll deal with it then."
After the game, he commented on the reality of having kicked the game winner:
"This has has been such a long ride. It couldn't end more perfectly. It's unbelievable."
