Fred Mitchell Award 2011 Watch List, part 1

The just released Watch List for the 2011 Fred Mitchell Award includes 50 Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), Division II, III, National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) collegiate place-kickers that were nominated by their colleges for excellence on the football field and in the community.

The breakdown of the 50 place-kickers is as follows:
  • Collegiate Division – 15 FCS, 20 Division II, 11 Division III, 3 NAIA and 1 NJCAA
  • State – the place-kickers play at schools located in 30 different states, led by Minnesota with 5 place-kickers
  • Year – 23 Seniors, 16 Juniors, 11 Sophomores
  • Fred Mitchell Award Finalists in 2010 that are on the 2011 Watch List - 28

Tyler Almeida, University of Mount Union (Ohio) – Division III
Junior from Elyria, OH….2nd on the #2 ranked Purple Raiders in 2010 scoring with 82 points from 10 of 13 FG’s and 52 of 54 PAT’s….7 of 7 in PAT’s and 1 of 1 FG’s in 52-0 win over Muskinghum on November 13….made 6 PAT’s in three games this season…scored 8 points in 38-0 win over Capital on October 23….scored 9 points in 45-7 win over Heidelberg on October 16….made a career-long 34-yard FG at John Carroll…Raider Buddy Program volunteer to visit local elementary schools to mentor and tutor students

Drew Behrens, Augustana College (South Dakota) – Division II

Gregg Berkshire, Ashland University (Ohio) – Division II
Senior from Ashland, OH….led team in 2010 scoring with 96 points from 16 of 23 FG’s and 48 of 50 PAT’s….was kicker on summer 2011 United States team that won the Gold Medal at the International Federation of American Football Senior World Championship….First Team All-Conference and Second Team All-Region….led Conference kickers in scoring (20th in Division II) and FG’s per game (6th in Division II)….set school record for scoring by place-kickers in a season, breaking his record that he set in 2009….set school record for most PAT’s and most FG’s in a season in 2010….tied for school record with 118 career PAT’s….ranks 2nd in career kick scoring (248 points), 3rd in career FG’s (40) and tied for 1st in career PAT’s (118)….scored 14 points in 44-15 win over Ohio Dominican on November 6….scored 12 points in 30-24 win over Saginaw Valley State on October 23....made a career-long 50-yard FG and scored 13 of Ashland’s 19 points at Northern Michigan on September 25….starting place-kicker all three seasons….averaged 61 yards in 80 kickoffs…filmed a television spot for Ashland County United Way to promote the United Drive program to collect canned goods from local residents…volunteered for United Drive collection campaign…spoke to Ashland Middle School students about the importance of goal setting and he also read them books….guest speaker at several Sunday School classes at local church….involved in community drive to upgrade Ashland City Schools where he distributed literature, posted signs in the community and sent letters to support the initiative

Garrett Biel, Trinity University (Texas) – Division III
Junior from Clayton, CA….leads the Tigers in 2010 scoring with 52 points from 8 of 13 FG’s and 28 of 31 PAT’s….scored 7 points in October 23 game against DePauw….48-yard FG against Rhodes tied for the 4th longest in school history….45-yard FG against Millsaps tied for the 8th longest in school history….ranked in top 5 in Trinity history in career FG’s made (25) and attempted (32) in just his second season… Preseason All-American…Conference Special Teams Player of the Week following 38-28 win over Birmingham-Southern on October 2 when he made all five PAT’s and a 49-yard FG late in the fourth quarter which is the 3rd longest FG in school history….averaged 50 yards in 21 kickoffs….assists families unable to properly care for their dogs by working with a San Antonio organization that distributes coupons, dog food, leashes, toys and more….helps youth place-kickers at his former high school….visited an orphanage in San Antonio to spend the day playing outside, painting and eating with the children....helping to organize the school’s blood drive

Zach Brown, Portland State University (Oregon) – FCS
Junior from Keizer, OR….led the team in 2010 scoring with 79 points from 18 of 26 FG’s and 23 of 23 PAT’s….enters 2011 season as Preseason All-Big Sky Conference and named Second Team All-American by The Sports Network….All-Big Sky Conference Honorable Mention….school’s Special Teams Player of the Year….two-time Conference Special Teams Player of the Week….scored 17 points including rush on 2 point conversion in 41-33 win over UC-Davis on September 10….scored all of the team’s points against Arizona State by making FG’s from 43, 53 and 47 yards….set school record with 18 FG’s in a season as a Freshman and tied that record as a Sophomore….holds school record for most career FG’s with 36 and with two seasons yet to play….tied for 3rd in FCS with 1.64 FG’s per game….44 of 44 PAT’s in career and has set school record for most consecutive PAT’s made….has made 4 of the school’s 9 all-time FG’s over 50 yards….averaged 64 yards on 55 kickoffs….volunteer at McLaren Juvenile Detention Center….participated in Male Involvement Night at River Road Head Start which is a child development program for low-income and special needs children

Tyler Cannon, Eastern New Mexico University – Division II
Senior from Los Lunas, NM….led the team in 2010 scoring with 84 points from 13 of 18 FG’s and 45 of 46 PAT’s…scored 7 points in 55-20 win over Southeastern Oklahoma on October 30….scored 14 points in 44-21 win over defending Lone Star Conference North Division Champion Texas A&M-Commerce on September 25….volunteer reader to elementary school students in Dr. Seuss Day at schools in Floyd, NM….youth football camp volunteer

Edgar Colmenares, Northwestern Oklahoma State University – NAIA
Sophomore from Pauls Valley, OK…2nd on the team in 2010 scoring with 71 points from 9 of 12 FG’s and 44 of 49 PAT’s….Central States Football League Special Teams Player of the Week three times….scored 15 points in 51-14 win over Bacone on October 16….scored 10 points in 62-42 win over Southern Nazarene on October 9….tied school record by making 9 PAT’s in 79-20 win over Texas College on September 25….took part in the Big Event community event when the football team planted 80 trees at the recreation center

Warren Frevert, William Jewell College (Missouri) – Division II
Sophomore from Lee’s Summit, MO….led the Cardinals in 2010 scoring with 62 points from 15 of 15 FG’s and 17 of 20 PAT’s….school moved from NAIA in 2010 to Division II in 2011….led NAIA in 2010 FG percentage and ranked 2nd with 1.4 FG’s per game….participated in the football team’s annual Community Service Day….part of a group that provided holiday gifts for a local family

Jason Fowler, Ouachita Baptist University (Arkansas) – Division II
