Fred Mitchell Award 2011 Watch List, part 4

For the annual Fred Mitchell Award, a blue-ribbon Selection Committee evaluates place-kickers that are nominated by their schools. Members of the Pro and/or College Football Hall of Fame on the Selection Committee include Tom Beck, Kevin Butler, Paul Hornung, Marv Levy, Steve McMichael, Don Pierson and Gale Sayers. Several former football players that are active in their communities are also on the Selection Committee including Carl Allegretti, Sean Gothier, Dan Jiggetts, Jeff Michalczyk, Mark Murphy, Rob Perry, Jeff Schebler, Bob Thomas, Todd Wilkins, Gary Zauner and Rob Zvonar. There are eight former college or NFL place-kickers on the Selection Committee, including Schebler, the inaugural Fred Mitchell Award recipient in 2009 and the highest-scoring place-kicker in NCAA history at any level.

In alphabetical order, following is the final quarter of the preseason watch list.

Dylan Rushe, Endicott College (Massachusetts) – Division III
Sophomore from Palos Verdes, CA….led the Gulls in 2010 scoring with 81 points from 14 of 19 FG’s and 39 of 39 PAT’s….named NEFC First Team,, All-East Region First Team, ECAC Division III North All-Star and NEFC Special Teams Player of the Week….top scorer on a team that won the school’s first NEFC Championship and made their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance….14 FG’s in rookie season set school record, ranked first in NEFC and 13th in Division III….scored 11 points in 29-28 comeback win over Salve Regina from 3 of 3 FG’s and 2 of 2 PAT’s….scored 11 points in 23-15 win over Western New England from 3 of 3 FG’s and 2 of 2 PAT’s to solidify the NEFC Boyd Division title….averaged 56 yards in 33 kickoffs….participates in annual run to raise money for St. Vincent de Paul as well as monthly food and clothing drives throughout local parish in Dublin, Ireland….assisted with Habitat for Humanity projects in Wilmington and Long Beach, CA….participates in weekly events with special needs children at North Shore Arc…Open Door Food Pantry volunteer during holidays to distribute food and household products….raises funds for Relay for Life, Walk for Life, City of Hope and Wellness Community

Chris Scifo, University of New Haven (Connecticut) – Division II
Sophomore from Coral Springs, FL….led the team in 2010 scoring with 70 points from 11 of 15 FG’s and 37 of 39 PAT’s…scored 12 points on 3 of 3 FG’s and 3 of 3 PAT’s in 30-0 win over Lincoln on September 9…averaged 57 yards in 63 kickoffs….Chamber of Commerce volunteer for Dover Beach Clean-Up….Pagels School Student Mentor….West Haven leaf raking

Wesley Skiffington, Stony Brook University (New York) - FCS
Junior from Brandon, FL…3rd on the Seawolves in 2010 scoring with 65 points from 7 of 12 FG’s and 44 of 46 PAT’s….scored 9 points in 27-9 win over VMI on October 9 including career-long 44-yard FG….made 11 PAT’s in wins over Charleston Southern on October 30 and Coastal Carolina on October 23….averaged 51 yards on 35 kickoffs….Friends of Jaclyn Program volunteer….Sunrise Fund volunteer at Stony Brook University Medical Center

Pat Smith, Western Illinois University – FCS
Sophomore from Quincy, IL….scored 36 points in 2010 from 5 of 7 FG’s and 21 of 21 PAT’s….became starter in the 6th game of the 2010 season….2011 Preseason All-Missouri Valley Conference….scored 12 points in 30-14 win over Northern Iowa on November 20….averaged 64 yards on 2 kickoffs….YMCA Youth Football Coach….MS Telethon volunteer….Veteran Buddy Program at Vets Home….Kindergarten Buddy Program volunteer….Olympic Day Helper

Stephen Stansell, Austin Peay State University (Tennessee) – FCS
Junior from Athens, TN….tied for 1st on the Governors in 2010 scoring with 54 points on 11 of 17 FG’s and 21 of 22 PAT’s…made 50-yard FG against Jacksonville State on October 23….made 50-yard FG against Tennessee State on September 18 en route to 26-23 win while also tying the school record by making four FG’s in the game….earned Conference Specialist of the Week and College Football Performance Awards Place-Kicker Co-Performer of the Week….made 51-yard FG at Wisconsin to score Austin Peay’s only points….only place-kicker in school history to make FG’s of 50 yards or more in consecutive games….only player in school history to make three 50+ yard FG’s in a season….averaging 610 yards in 45 kickoffs….volunteers in the Young Life program that serves youth in the Clarksville area

Jon Storck, Waynesburg University (Pennsylvania) – Division III
Junior from Smyrna, DE…. led team in 2010 scoring with 64 points on 8 of 11 FG’s and 40 of 42 PAT’s….scored 13 points in 55-42 win over Geneva on October 9….scored 10 points in 34-6 win over Thiel on September 18 and named to’s Team of the Week after the win….averaged 58 yards in 59 kickoffs….Habitat for Humanity volunteer…Uniontown city mission charity work….participated in highway clean-up with football team

Jesse Sundby, Bemidji State University (Minnesota) – Division II
Senior from Argyle, MN….finished 2nd on the team in 2010 scoring with 48 points from 6 of 7 FG’s and 30 of 32 PAT’s….two-time All-NSIC Second Team….two-time NSIC Special Teams Player of the Week…scored career-high 11 points including 3 FG’s including game-winning 26-yard FG with 21 seconds remaining to beat U-Mary 23-22 on October 23….school’s first kicker to make 3 FG’s in a game since 2000….participates in Spring Clean-Up efforts at a local park….volunteers at the Special Olympics on campus…visits local elementary schools as part of partnership between the schools and the football program

Stefan Terleckyj, Wayne State University (Michigan) – Division II
Sophomore from Warren, MI…2nd on the team in 2010 scoring with 77 points from 11 of 15 FG’s and 44 of 44 PAT’s….set school record with most kicking points in a season…school’s Special Teams Most Valuable Player….All-Conference Honorable Mention as a Freshman….tied for 4th in school history with 11 FG’s in a season…broke school record for consecutive PAT’s made when he made his 34th PAT in 41-27 win at Saginaw Valley on October 30….scored 14 points in 44-27 win against Findlay on November 13…averaged 59 yards on 65 kickoffs….participated in United Way’s Martin Luther King Day of Service by assisting the Motor City Blight Busters with a renovation project in metropolitan Detroit….collected consumer products for the DO Foundation’s Hit the Street Mission and Covenant House Michigan

David Van Voris, Adams State College (Colorado) – Division II
Junior from Elizabeth, CO….2nd on team in 2010 scoring with 39 points from 4 of 14 FG’s and 27 of 28 PAT’s… Preseason All-Conference and All-American Second Team….made career-long 51-yard FG against Colorado Mines on October 30 which was the second longest FG in the Conference in 2010….chosen by the National Football Foundation Colorado Chapter as the 2009 Special Teams Player of the Year and First Team All-Colorado….led Division II place-kickers with 1.89 FG’s per game in 2009….averaged 65 yards on 43 kickoffs….set school records for points (71) and FG’s (17) in a season ….Student-Athlete Work Day volunteer….Work-A-Thon participant....rakes leaves for senior citizens

Adam Willets, Campbell University (North Carolina) – FCS
Senior from Gibsonville, NC….2nd on the team in 2010 scoring with 55 points from 9 of 15 FG’s and 28 of 31 PAT’s…entering Senior season with school records for career points (126), FG’s made (23) and PAT attempts (57)….2011 College Football Performance Awards Preseason Place-Kicker….set school record with 47-yard FG against Virginia-Wise on September 4….named Pioneer Football League Special Teams Player of the Week on November 22….averaged 54 yards on 46 kickoffs….recorded 7 tackles on special teams….Relay for Life volunteer for four years….participates in Stop Hunger Now program by providing food for local families….promoted local community service events by visiting three local elementary schools

Braden Wieking, University of Sioux Falls (South Dakota) – Division II
Junior from Sioux Falls, SD….2nd on the #1 ranked Cougars in 2010 scoring with 118 points from 15 of 25 FG’s and 73 of 74 PAT’s….set NAIA record with 162 consecutive PAT’s and team is joining Division II in 2011….scored 12 points in 66-21 win over Briar Cliff on October 9….scored 10 points in 34-10 win over 22nd ranked Hastings on September 25….scored 13 points in 37-7 win over Midland Lutheran on September 11 including a career-long 44-yard FG….named NAIA Player of the Week and Great Plains Athletic Conference Player of the Week after win over Midland Lutheran….two-time Conference Honorable Mention selection….averaged 62 yards on 77 kickoffs…scored 139 points in 2009 which set an NAIA record…’s nomination for Allstate Good Hands Team….Sioux Falls Fellowship of Christian Athletes volunteer and Group Huddle Leader on campus….Habitat for Humanity volunteer….Vacation Bible Study volunteer

Tommy Wilczynski, Rowan University (New Jersey) – Division III
Senior from Pine Hill, NJ….takes over starting place-kicker position in 2011….scored 7 points in 2010 on 7 of 8 PAT’s….made 5 of 5 PAT’s on October 23 at The College at Brockport….converted both PAT’s on November 13 at The College of New Jersey….averaged 52 yards on 11 kickoffs….participated in the team’s annual Get in the Game, Save a Life bone marrow registry….Rowan University Clean and Green event volunteer….involved in the football team’s adoption of a family via the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation

Anthony Wood, Fond du Lac Tribal & Community College (Minnesota) – NJCAA
Senior from Cloquet, MN….scored 18 points in 2010 from 1 of 1 FG’s and 15 of 15 FG’s after joining the Thunder mid-season….earned Special Teams Player of the Week honors in the Minnesota Community College Conference….intern in Athletic Director’s office….Student Senate Activities Coordinator….volunteers to help local high school place-kickers and punters….coaches Junior Varsity soccer at Cloquet High School
