Fred Mitchell Award October 2011 Recognizees, part 1

The Fred Mitchell Award recognizes 36 place-kickers for their excellence on the football field and in the community during the month of October. "October was a terrific month for game-winning field goals, record-setting performances and community service by place-kickers. It is a pleasure to recognize place-kickers that were nominated by their schools for extraordinary performance during the month," said Fred Mitchell. The Award’s Selection Committee Chairman Chris Kearney added, "These place-kickers had tremendous success on the gridiron in October, a pivotal month for college football teams. In addition, their civic and volunteer activities are having a profound and positive impact in their communities. We are delighted to honor this group."

In alphabetical order, the first third of the Fred Mitchell Award honorees for October 2011 are listed below.

TIM ALBRIGHT, University of St. Thomas (Minnesota) – Division III
Junior from Urbandale, IA….3rd on the 3rd ranked Tommies in scoring with 53 points from 5 of 8 FG’s and 38 of 38 PAT’s…scored 10 points in 23-13 win over then-10th ranked Bethel University on October 22 and earned Conference Special Teams Player of the Week honors….made a career-high 48-yard FG against Bethel which was the school’s longest FG in 21 seasons….has made 61 straight PAT’s….leads the MIAC in PAT’s, PAT % and kick scoring…key part of team that won the first consecutive Conference championships since 1948 and 1949….averaging 61 on 52 kickoffs….participated in the school’s tutor-mentor program….helped local elementary school students weekly for 10 weeks with math, reading and science

TYLER ALMEIDA, University of Mount Union (Ohio) – Division III
Junior from Elyria, OH….leads the #2 ranked Purple Raiders in scoring with 67 points from 7 of 9 FG’s and 46 of 48 PAT’s….scored 34 points in October from 3 of 3 FG’s and 25 of 26 PAT’s….made career-long 37-yard FG against Marietta on October 8….scored 11 points in 62-0 win over Marietta on October 8 …scored 8 points in 56-7 win over Heidelberg on October 15….Raider Buddy Program volunteer to visit local elementary schools to mentor and tutor students

STEVEN BALLARD, College of the Siskiyous (California) – NJCAA
Sophomore from Mt. Shasta, CA….2nd on the team in scoring with 45 points from 3 of 3 FG’s and 36 of 41 PAT’s….set school record with 10 PAT’s in 70-7 win over Shasta on October 29….scored 11 points in 65-6 win over Mendocino on October 22….made game-winning 30-yard FG to beat highly-ranked Santa Rosa 37-34….averaging 44 yards on 26 kickoffs….Mt. Shasta youth football camp volunteer

GREGG BERKSHIRE, Ashland University (Ohio) – Division II
Senior from Ashland, OH….leads the team in scoring with 74 points from 15 of 24 FG’s and 29 of 30 PAT’s….owns school kicking records for career PAT’s, FG’s and points….2nd in the Conference in kick scoring, FG’s per game and PAT’s….GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week six times in his career including after making the game-winning FG as time expired to beat Wayne State 20-17 on October 15….d2football.com National Special Teams Player of the Week two times in his career including after October 15 win over Wayne State….GLIAC career leader in FG’s….was kicker on summer 2011 United States team that won the Gold Medal at the International Federation of American Football Senior World Championship…. filmed a television spot for Ashland County United Way to promote the United Drive program to collect canned goods from local residents…volunteered for United Drive collection campaign…spoke to Ashland Middle School students about the importance of goal setting and he also read them books….guest speaker at several Sunday School classes at local church….involved in community drive to upgrade Ashland City Schools where he distributed literature, posted signs in the community and sent letters to support the initiative…joined teammates at campus bookstore to read stories to area children

ZACH BROWN, Portland State University (Oregon) – FCS
Junior from Keizer, OR….2nd on the Vikings in scoring with 64 points from 14 of 15 FG’s, 20 of 22 PAT’s and one 2-point conversion rush….leads the Big Sky Conference in FG % and only FG miss was from 53 yards….ranks 3rd in FCS and leads Conference in FG’s made per game….holds school record for most career FG’s with 50 and with more than one season yet to play….set school record with 16 consecutive FG’s made dating to last season before missing the 53-yard FG….has made 5 of the school’s 9 all-time FG’s over 50 yards including 53-yard FG against Montana on October 15…tied career record with 44 consecutive PAT’s made….scored 10 points in 38-36 loss against then-#3 Montana State on October 8….scored 13 points in 43-26 win over defending National Champions Eastern Washington on October 29….averaging 63 yards on 47 kickoffs….volunteer at McLaren Juvenile Detention Center….participated in Male Involvement Night at River Road Head Start which is a child development program for low-income and special needs children…participated in the Walk to D’Feet ALS in memory of longtime school booster Elinore Nudelman

CHASE CARPENTER, Northwest Mississippi Community College – NJCAA
Freshman from Slayden, MS….2nd on the team in scoring with 57 points from 4 of 7 FG’s and 45 of 49 PAT’s….scored 33 points in October from 3 of 3 FG’s and 24 of 25 PAT’s…on pace to finish in the top 5 in PAT’s made and attempted in single-season school history…scored 8 points in 45-7 win over Itawamba on October 27….averaging 54 yards on 58 kickoffs….exceeded 50 hours in community service….Vacation Bible School volunteer

JASON CUNNINGHAM, Montana State University (Montana) – FCS
Senior from Amarillo, TX….leads the Bobcats and the Big Sky Conference in scoring with 80 points from 14 of 19 FG’s and 38 of 40 PAT’s …owns record for most career points in school history with 311 points…61 career FG’s is most in school history and 6th in Conference history….made all 5 FG attempts in win at Eastern Washington including two 55-yard FG’s…scored 12 points in 54-13 win over Idaho State on October 29….6 of 9 FG’s from beyond 50 yards in career….volunteers in the Bozeman public school system

ZACH CZAP, Lycoming College (Pennsylvania) – Division III
Sophomore from Philipsburg, PA … leads the team in scoring with 58 points from 10 of 12 FG’s and 28 of 31 PAT’s….leads the Middle Atlantic Conference in kicking scoring (7.2 points per game) and 3rd overall … leads the league with 10 FG’s … made all 6 FG attempts in October including a career-long 45-yarder at Stevenson … earned two MAC Special Teams Player of the Week awards during October after hitting 3 FG’s in win over King’s and 2 FG’s at Stevenson … made 29-yard FG in the snow against Lebanon Valley as time expired in first half to give Warriors a 10-0 lead in a 10-7 win …helped a local church with a basketball open gym last spring … participated in the Student Senate of Lycoming College's haunted house … active in youth work at his hometown YMCA

Senior from Qing Dao, China….2nd on the team in scoring with 59 points from 9 of 12 FG’s and 32 of 33 PAT’s….scored 41 points in October from 7 of 8 FG’s and 20 of 21 PAT’s….scored 10 points in 40-21 win over Husson on October 8….averaging 47 yards on 52 kickoffs….nominated for the National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award for excellence on the football field, in the classroom and in the community….volunteer Academic Mentor on campus

DAVE EDEN, University of Northern Colorado - FCS
Sophomore from Westminster, CO….2nd on the team in scoring with 42 points from 8 of 11 FG’s and 18 of 19 PAT’s….scored 21 points in October….made career-long 42-yard FG at Idaho State on September 17 which is the 4th longest kick since the school was added to the FCS in 2006….scored 9 points against Eastern Washington on October 15….volunteers for Bagging with the Bears program where student-athletes help the community by bagging and carting groceries to vehicles

JAMES ESCO, Jacksonville State University (Alabama) – FCS
Junior from Leesburg, GA…leads the team in scoring with 42 points from 5 of 5 FG’s and 27 of 28 PAT’s….scored 8 points in 38-30 win over Murray State on October 1….former walk-on place-kicker at Florida State University….Gadsden Museum of Cultural Arts volunteer…Fellowship of Christian Athletes….volunteers to speak to juvenile diabetes patients as a diabetic himself

RYAN ESTEP, Norfolk State University (Virginia) – FCS
Senior from Chesapeake, VA…leads the team in scoring with 67 points from 15 of 15 FG’s and 22 of22 PAT’s….two-time MEAC Special Teams Player of the Week….scored 5 points in 17-14 win over then-22nd ranked South Carolina State on October 1….Great Bridge High School football camp volunteer
