Fred Mitchell Award 2012 Watch List, part 1

The annual Fred Mitchell Outstanding Place-Kicker Award is provided to the nation’s top collegiate place-kicker among more than 750 FCS, Division II, III, NAIA and NJCAA football teams. The Award is named for Fred Mitchell, the record-setting place-kicker, Wittenberg University Athletic Hall of Famer, author, philanthropist and Chicago Tribune sports columnist. The recipient of the Fred Mitchell Award will be chosen based on excellence on the football field and in the community. The Award’s Watch List is released in August, top performers are recognized monthly during the college football season, and the winner (who is not required to be on the Watch List) is announced in mid-December. The school of the Award winner receives scholarship funds and the Fred Mitchell Award trophy will be presented in February 2013 at the National Football Foundation Chicago Metro Chapter Awards Ceremony at Halas Hall. 

The breakdown of the 44 place-kickers on this years’ watch list is as follows: 
  • Collegiate Division – 16 FCS, 11 Division II, 14 Division III, 0 NAIA and 3 NJCAA 
  • State – the place-kickers play at schools located in 25 different states, five play at schools in Pennsylvania 
  • Year – 23 Seniors, 14 Juniors, 7 Sophomores

In alphabetical order, following is the first third of the 2012 Fred Mitchell Award Watch List: 

TREVER AUSTIN, Gardner-Webb University (North Carolina) – FCS 
Sophomore from Shelby, NC….led the Runnin’ Bulldogs in 2011 scoring with 57 points from 12 of 15 FG’s and 21 of 22 PAT’s….led the Big South Conference with12 FG’s which ranks 2nd in Conference history for freshmen….led Conference in FG %...Second Team All-Big South….Conference Freshman of the Week three times….National FCS Place-Kicker of the Week after scoring 14 points in 26-24 win at Coastal Carolina on October 22….made game-winning 31-yard FG as time expired to beat Coastal Carolina….executed successful onside kick and made 41-yard FG at Ohio on September 10…averaged 51 yards on 42 kickoffs….participated in team service project at a fundraiser for a local cancer patient….assisted with a team appearance at an event a the Dover YMCA 

STEVEN BALLARD, College of the Siskiyous (California) – NJCAA 
Junior from Mt. Shasta, CA….2nd on the team in 2011 scoring with 56 points from 5 of 5 FG’s and 41 of 47 PAT’s….set school records for most PAT’s in a season (41), season FG % (100%) and most FG’s in two seasons (68)….set school record with 10 PAT’s in 70-7 win over Shasta on October 29….scored 11 points in 65-6 win over Mendocino on October 22….made game-winning 30-yard FG to beat highly-ranked Santa Rosa 37-34….averaged 45 yards on 38 kickoffs….Mt. Shasta youth football camp volunteer 

ZACH BROWN, Portland State University (Oregon) – FCS 
Senior from Keizer, OR….led the Vikings in 2011 scoring with 101 points from 24 of 27 FG’s, 27 of 29 PAT’s and one 2-point conversion rush….led the Big Sky Conference in FG % and only FG misses were from 46+ yards….led FCS in FG’s made per game….holds school record for most career FG’s with 60 and with one season yet to play….set school record for most FG’s in a season….All-Big Sky Conference First Team….set school record with 16 consecutive FG’s made dating to last season before missing a 53-yard FG….has made 6 of the school’s 10 all-time FG’s over 50 yards including 53-yard FG against Montana on October 15…tied career record with 44 consecutive PAT’s made….scored 10 points in 38-36 loss against then-#3 Montana State on October 8….scored 13 points in 43-26 win over defending National Champions Eastern Washington on October 29….averaged 61 yards on 70 kickoffs….volunteer at McLaren Juvenile Detention Center….participated in Male Involvement Night at River Road Head Start which is a child development program for low-income and special needs children…participated in the Walk to D’Feet ALS in memory of longtime school booster Elinore Nudelman 

ALLEN CAIN, Texas Lutheran University – Division III 
Senior from San Antonio, TX…led the team in 2011 scoring with 83 points from 17 of 21 FG’s and 32 of 32 PAT’s….three-year starter back for his senior year after collecting four playing All-America citations and a Capital One First Team Academic All-America Team honor...First Team All-American by Beyond Sports, American Football Coaches Association and in 2011….Second Team AP Little All-America in 2011...first student-athlete in TLU history to claim four playing All-America honors and an Academic All-America award in the same season...first TLU football player to claim First Team All-America and First Team Academic All-America honors in the same season...led Division III in FG’s made (17) and in FG’s made per game (1.70) in 2011...17 FG’s in 2011 set ASC and TLU single-season records...made 5 FG’s in a game in 2011 to set a new conference record...kicked a school-record 53-yard FG in the 5 FG game...five-time ASC Special Teams Player of the Week in 2011…three-time Team of the Week selection in 2011….tied for 4th in Division III kick scoring with 83 points….averaged 64 yards on 58 kickoffs...served as a math grader, a resident assistant, a Student Government Association senator, a TLU Honors Program member, a Math Club member….Fellowship of Christian Athletes….Student-Athlete Advisory Council representative….Seguin Youth Services math tutor…..youth football coach 

CHASE CARPENTER, Northwest Mississippi Community College – NJCAA 
Sophomore from Slayden, MS….2nd on the team in 2011 scoring with 57 points from 4 of 7 FG’s and 45 of 49 PAT’s….MACJC Second Team All-State….two-time NJCAA Special Teams Player of the Week….ranks 6th in school history with 45 PAT’s made and 49 attempted in a season….scored 33 points in October from 3 of 3 FG’s and 24 of 25 PAT’s…scored career-high 12 points in 66-41 win over Holmes….scored 8 points in 45-7 win over Itawamba on October 27….averaged 54 yards on 58 kickoffs….exceeded 50 hours in community service….Vacation Bible School volunteer 

ZACH CZAP, Lycoming College (Pennsylvania) – Division III 
Junior from Philipsburg, PA … led the Warriors in 2011 scoring with 73 points from 12 of 14 FG’s and 37 of 40 PAT’s….Third Team Beyond Sports College Network Preseason All-American … 2011 Honorable Mention Beyond Sports College Network Preseason All-American … led the MAC in scoring by kickers at 7.3 points per game and added a league-topping 12 made FG’s in 2011 …. 2011 First Team All-MAC kicker … hit the longest FG in the MAC during the season with a 45-yard FG at Stevenson … made his last nine FG’s of the year, all of which came in conference play … earned three MAC Special Teams of the Week awards, giving him five in his career … helped with flood cleanup along the Loyalsock Creek with the football team … helped a local church with a basketball open gym last spring … participated in the Student Senate of Lycoming College's haunted house … active in youth work at his hometown YMCA

KYLE EVANS, Manchester College (Indiana) – Division III 
Senior from Winamac, IN….2nd on the Spartans in 2011 scoring with 59 points from 12 of 18 FG’s and 23 of 25 PAT’s….Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Year….ranked 2nd in Conference scoring among kickers and 8th overall….set school record and tied Conference record by making 4 FG’s in a game which he has done twice….led Conference in FG’s made this season and ranks 15th in Division III in FG%....averaged 61 yards on 45 kickoffs….Special Olympics volunteer….works voluntarily with youth football place-kickers in his hometown during the summer….North Manchester Parks and Recreation volunteer including assisting children in developing motor skills 

WARREN FREVERT, William Jewell College (Missouri) – Division II 
Junior from Lee’s Summit, MO…led the Cardinals in 2011 scoring with 42 points from 8 of 10 FG’s and 18 of 20 PAT’s in school’s first full season of Division II competition….scored 5 points in 17-12 win over Kentucky Wesleyan on November 12….led NAIA in 2010 FG % in last season in NAIA….averaged 58 yards on 38 kickoffs….participated in the football team’s annual Community Service Day….part of group that provided holiday gifts to a local family 

JACOB GAHART, Ripon College (Wisconsin) – Division III 
Senior from Elkhorn, WI…. led the Red Hawks in 2011 scoring with 77 points from 15 of 16 FG’s, 30 of 33 PAT’s and one 2-point conversion…his 15 FG’s breaks the single season school record…his 31 career FG’s breaks the school record of 25, with one year left of eligibility…converted a school-record 54-yard FG in season finale against Lawrence on November 5, breaking the previous mark by seven yards…54-yard FG ranks second in Midwest Conference history… converted all three of his field goals against Lawrence on November 5, tying the school record for most FG’s in a single game…scored a season-high 14 points against Lawrence on November 5…five-time Midwest Conference Special Teams Performer of the Week this season out of 10 possible weeks….named All-Conference for the third consecutive season and All-Conference First Team for the second straight year…15 FG’s this season led the MWC and is nearly double the second-highest total (8)…ranks 7th in school history for career points (215), making him the only kicker to rank in the top 10…has made 11 consecutive FG’s…11-for-11 on FG’s less than 42 yards this season…scored 38 points in October from 8 of 8 FG”s, 12 of 13 PAT’s and one 2-point conversion…. made his second 45-yard FG of the season against St. Norbert on October 29 which is his 3rd longest FG and 7th longest in school history….averaged 53 yards on 60 kickoffs….has one reception for 9 yards this season….career development department volunteer at Ripon College….mentor to students at Ripon Middle School….assisted with research to establish an improved test for freshmen during Summer orientation 

JORDAN GAY, Centre College (Kentucky) – Division III 
Senior from Danville, KY….led the team in 2011 scoring with 84 points from 11 of 16 FG’s, 45 of 46 PAT’s and one TD….2011 Second Team All-South Region and SCAC First Team….2nd in the SCAC in scoring….SCAC Special Teams Player of the Year….three-time SCAC Special Teams Player of the Week….scored 18 points in 38-21 win over Hanover including 5 FG’s ….averaged 62 yards on 45 kickoffs…Salvation Army volunteer….Harvest Hope Soup Kitchen volunteer….works with local kickers and punters 

EVERETT GOLDBERG, Norfolk State University (Virginia) - FCS 
Senior from Mesa Ridge, CO….2012 First Team preseason All-MEAC….served as the team’s kickoff and long-distance FG kicker in 2011….made 6 of 10 FG’s in 2011 all of which were 47 yards or longer….only FCS kicker to make 3 FG’s of 50+ yards…made 50+-yard FG’s against Howard, West Virginia and Bethune-Cookman….MEAC Special Teams Player of the Week after making 47 and 50-yard FG’s against Bethune-Cookman….volunteers at the Brentwood Victory Bingo Hall in Portsmouth….volunteered to help run two flag football camps for children with special needs 

TAYLOR GROFF, East Stroudsburg University (Pennsylvania) – Division II 
Junior from Manheim, PA….led the team in 2011 scoring with 50 points from 11 of 14 FG’s and 17 of 19 PAT’s despite missing the first 3 games of the season due to injury….tied career-long with 48-yard FG against West Chester then kicked 52-yard FG on October 8 against Kutztown….was 6 of 7 in FG’s from 40+ yards….made FG’s from 44 and 27 yards and kicked game-winning PAT with no time left in 27-26 win over Edinboro in final game of season on November 12….set school record as a freshman by making 16 of 21 FG’s including making all 12 FG’s from under 40 yards…27 of 35 FG’s for career…has made 10 FG’s from 40+ yards in career….10 of 11 on game-tying or lead-changing FG’s….6 of 6 in FG’s in the last minute of the first half….averaged 62 yards on 37 kickoffs….volunteer for children’s programs at local church….participates in school’s Breakfast with the Warriors during preseason camp…volunteers at Kohl’s Kicking Camps and Special Teams Solutions Camps 

BRIAN HARVEY, University of Maine – FCS 
Senior from Wayland, MA….2nd on the Black Bears in 2011 scoring with 65 points from 8 of 14 FG’s and 41 of 44 PAT’s….made two PAT’s and game-tying 34-yard FG with 44 seconds left to send game into OT against James Madison….made career-long 41-yard FG at New Hampshire and added three PAT’s….made 4 of 5 PAT’s at Appalachian State in the NCAA Playoffs….made 21-yard FG and both PAT’s at Georgia Southern in NCAA Quarterfinal game….averaged 45 yards on 14 kickoffs….Maine Troop Greeters volunteer….volunteers to assist the senior citizens in hometown….volunteers at several kicking camps
