Fred Mitchell Outstanding Place-Kicker Award 2012 Finalists

Ten finalists have been named for the 2012 Fred Mitchell Award, which is provided to the Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III, NAIA or NJCAA place-kicker that excels on the football field and in the community. 

The place-kicker chosen for this Award will be announced on December 11, and he will be honored on February 18, 2013 at the National Football Foundation Chicago Chapter Awards Ceremony.

There were 38 place-kickers nominated for this Award. The breakdown of the 10 finalists is as follows:
  • Collegiate Division – 2 FCS, 5 Division II, 3 Division III, 0 NAIA, 0 NJCAA
  • State – the place-kickers play at schools located in 9 different states
  • Year – 6 Seniors, 4 Juniors, 0 Sophomore, 0 Freshmen
  • Included on the Preseason Watch List for the 2012 Fred Mitchell Award - 5

TODD ADOLF - Northwest Missouri State University – Division II 
Senior from Omaha, NE….2nd on the Bearcats in scoring with 109 points from 13 of 16 FG’s and 70 of 70 PAT’s….made career-long 48-yard FG in 48-10 win over Fort Hays State on September 15…..scored 13 points in 37-13 win over Nebraska-Kearney on September 22….scored 5 points in 38-35 OT loss in the playoffs to Minnesota State on November 24….has made 268 of 272 career PAT’s….371 career points ranks 6th in school history….averaged 62 yards on 97 kickoffs….Habitat for Humanity volunteer….participates in the team’s annual cleanup efforts to help the elderly in Maryville

SAM BROCKSHUS - Minnesota State University – Division II
Junior from Spencer, IA….leads the 13-0 5th ranked Mavericks in scoring with 115 points from 19 of 24 FG’s and 58 of 59 PAT’s….First-Team All-NSIC South Division….set school record with 115 points breaking previous record of 97 points…career leading scorer with 257 career points…has scored at least 10 points in 6 games this season and 10 times in his career….owns school record for most career FG’s (38), PAT’s (143) and single-season PAT’s (58)….scored 8 points including game-winner in 38-35 OT win over Northwest Missouri State in the playoffs on November 24….tied career-high with 12 points in 30-20 win over Winona State on October 20 including career-long 47-yard FG resulting in NSIC Special Teams Player of the Week honors….averaging 59 yards on 85 kickoffs….member of MSU’a and NSIC’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee….raised funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation….volunteers at youth and varsity football camps in his hometown….Fellowship of Christian Athletes….Kids Against Hunger volunteer….People and Christ Together food drive volunteer

ALLEN CAIN - Texas Lutheran University – Division III
Senior from San Antonio, TX….led the team in scoring with 95 points from 17 of 27 FG’s and 44 of 46 PAT’s….made FG’s from 59 and 55 yards….American Southwest Conference Special Teams Player of the Year and to Conference Outstanding Sportsmen Team of the Year….made Conference-high 17 FG’s….43 career FG’s is all-time leader in school and Conference history….tied his own school and conference records with 5 FG’s in 43-35 win over Southwestern Assemblies of God on September 22 and made all 4 PAT’s to score 19 points in the game….earned Team of the Week honors….scored 14 points and made 4 FG’s in win over East Texas Baptist leading to 34-28 win on September 29….served as math grader, resident assistant, Student Government Association Senator, TLU Honors Program member and Math Club member…..Fellowship of Christian Athletes….Student-Athlete Advisory Council Representative….Seguin Youth Services math tutor….youth football coach

CURT DUNCAN - Carson-Newman (Tennessee) – Division II
Junior from Morristown, TN….led the team in scoring with 102 points from 14 of 15 FG’s and 60 of 60 PAT’s…54-yard FG against Tusculum on November 3 was the longest in school history….led Conference kickers in scoring….four-time SAC Special Teams Player of the Week….school’s first kicker since 1984 to make 4 FG’s in a game….scored 14 points including 4 of 4 FG’s in playoff game against Valdosta State on December 1….scored 8 points in 38-35 playoff win over Lenior-Rhyne on November 24….scored 17 points in game against Lenior-Rhyne on September 15 to set school kick scoring record in a game….volunteer coach and referee for youth basketball and soccer….intern at Manley Baptist Church Student Ministry….serves at local missions projects each summer such as Appalachian Outreach and Food on Foot….volunteers at Luke 14 weekend for people with disabilities….Fellowship of Christian Athletes…Student-Athlete Advisory Committee

TAYLOR GROFF - East Stroudsburg University (Pennsylvania) – Division II
Junior from Manheim, PA….led the team in scoring with 93 points from 15 of 23 FG’s and 48 of 48 PAT’s…. scored 15 points in 59-33 loss to Kutztown on October 20….scored 9 points in 45-37 win over LIU Post on October 27….holds school records for career FG % (72.4%) and career FG’s of 40+ yards (16) …. only kicker in PSAC history with multiple FG of 51+ yards (has 4 including 3 in 2012) … ranks 3rd in ESU history with 230 kicking points….averaged 61 yards on 72 kickoffs….volunteer for children’s programs at local church….participates in school’s Breakfast with the Warriors during preseason camp…volunteers at Kohl’s Kicking Camps and Special Teams Solutions Camps

JIMMIE MATTSON - Saint John’s University (Minnesota) – Division III
Senior from Eau Claire, WI….led the team in scoring with 70 points from 9 of 16 FG’s and 43 of 43 PAT’s….named to 2012 All-MIAC first team….ended the season as the MIAC’s leader in points among kickers (70) and FG’s (9)....finished 2nd in the Conference in PAT’s with 43 on 43 attempts….became first Johnnie since 1990 to make 3 FG’s in the same game at Bethel on November 10 (49, 44 and 27 yards)….three-time MIAC Special Teams Athlete of the Week in 2012 (six times overall in career)….ended career 2nd in school history in field goals (24), 3rd in points among kickers (192) and 4th in PAT’s (12)…had a school-record tying 52-yard FG against St. Olaf in 2009….)….averaged 63 yards on 57 kickoffs….volunteered with the Eau Claire Area Youth Football camp each of the summer from 2009-11….has volunteered with the Eau Claire Salvation Army each of the last four seasons….read and helped at Eau Claire Elementary School as a classroom volunteer during breaks and summers each of the past four years….volunteered with the non-profit Eau Claire Crush football team during summer 2012 (helped out in the community and donated all proceeds from the season to local charities)….volunteered with campus organization Volunteers in Service to Others (VISTO) throughout the 2011-12 academic year (swimming with disabled adults and those with special needs)

PATRICK MURRAY - Fordham University (New York) – FCS
Senior from Mahwah, NJ….led the Rams in scoring with 105 points from 25 of 30 FG’s and 30 of 31 PAT’s….First Team All-Patriot League….Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Week seven times in 2012….broke the school’s single season record with 25 FG’s beating previous record of 18 FG’s and setting Patriot League record….led FCS with 25 FG’s and was just 1 FG shy of FCS record of 26 FG’s set by Nevada’s Tony Zendejas in 1982….4 FG’s of 50+ yards was most in FCS....first kicker in school history to score 100+ points in a season and ranks 3rd for all players with 105 points in a season….38 career FG’s ranks 6th in school history….scored 12 points in 38-31 win over Georgetown on October 6…scored 10 points against the University of Cincinnati from FBS on October 13 including school-record 55-yard FG…. scored 12 points at Holy Cross on October 27 in a 36-32 win…averaged 64 yards on 69 kickoffs…volunteers with the football team in a reading program where players read to elementary school children in the Bronx…Part of the Solution program volunteer via the school at a local food shelter…volunteer assistant coach with the school’s men’s intramural soccer program…has volunteered for various food drives and toy drives at Fordham

PAT SMITH - Western Illinois University – FCS
Junior from Quincy, IL….led the Leathernecks in scoring with 41 points from 10 of 10 FG’s and 11 of 11 PAT’s….first kicker in school history to make all FG’s in a season….scored 6 points in 24-17 win over South Dakota on October 6….has made 11 straight FG’s dating to last season taking sole possession of 2nd place in school history and one shy of the school record….made career-long 46-yard FG in 27-17 win over Indianapolis….surpassed 100 career points in October….100% FG % ranks 1st in FCS….accumulated 46 rushing yards on three attempts and completed an 11-yard pass off a punt….averaged 59 yards on 33 kickoffs….Sammy Fund volunteer with his family for a fundraiser in his hometown….Relay for Life volunteer….Special Olympics volunteer…Rocky’s Reach volunteer helping elementary school children during recess and reading…Jump Rope for Heart volunteer

BRADEN WIEKING - University of Sioux Falls (South Dakota) –Division II
Senior from Sioux Falls, SD….led the team in scoring with 84 points from 16 of 19 FG’s and 36 of 38 PAT’s….scored 12 points in 54-41 win over Upper Iowa on October 26…two-time NSIC Special Teams Player of the Week….led the Conference in FG%....54-yard FG broke school record in 41-22 win over Southwest Minnesota State on September 29….school’s all-time leader in career FG’s (52) and 393 career points ranks 2nd all-time….averaged 64 yards on 69 kickoffs….team’s nomination for Allstate Good Hands Team….Sioux Falls Fellowship of Christian Athletes volunteer and Group Huddle Leader on campus….Habitat for Humanity volunteer….Vacation Bible Study volunteer

SEAN WILLIAMS - Wittenberg University (Ohio) – Division III
Senior from Plainfield, IN…led the team in scoring with 88 points (beating school record) from 12 of 14 FG’s and 52 of 55 PAT’s….scored school record-tying 14 points (3 of 3 FG's and 5 of 5 PAT's) in 52-38 win over Heidelberg in first round of NCAA Division III Tournament on November 17….244 career kicking points is 3rd in school history, surpassing Fred Mitchell in the first game of the 2012 season...finished career just 5 points shy of career record for points by a kicker….holds school records for consecutive FG’s (19) and PAT’s made (50)….holds school record for career FG's with 36...has made 136 of 142 PAT’s in his career for school best 96% among kickers with at least 40 attempts….has made 36 of 44 FG's in his career (streak of 10 in a row to end his career) for program-best 82% among kickers with at least 15 attempts...averaging 56 yards on 76 kickoffs….youth football camp volunteer in hometown and at Wittenberg….volunteered at Habitat for Humanity Re-Store in Springfield….Springfield Regional Medical Center volunteer….Rocking Horse Community Health Center intern
