Fred Mitchell Award 2013 Watch List, part 1

The annual Fred Mitchell Outstanding Place-Kicker Award is provided to the nation’s top collegiate place-kicker among more than 750 FCS, Division II, III, NAIA and NJCAA football teams. The Award is named for Fred Mitchell, the record-setting place-kicker, Wittenberg University Athletic Hall of Famer, author, philanthropist and Chicago Tribune sports columnist. The recipient of the Fred Mitchell Award will be chosen based on excellence on the football field and in the community. The Award’s Watch List is released in late July, top performers are recognized monthly during the college football season, and the winner (who is not required to be on the Watch List) is announced in mid-December. The school of the Award winner receives scholarship funds and the Fred Mitchell Award trophy will be presented in February 2013 at the National Football Foundation Chicago Metro Chapter Awards Ceremony at Halas Hall. 

The breakdown of the 33 place-kickers on this years’ watch list is as follows: 
  • Collegiate Division – 8 FCS, 12 Division II, 11 Division III, 1 NAIA and 1 NJCAA 
  • State – the place-kickers play at schools located in 17 different states
  • Year – 18 Seniors, 11 Juniors, 4 Sophomores 
  • Fred Mitchell Award Finalists in 2012 that are on the 2013 Watch List - 17
In alphabetical order, following is the first third of the 2013 Fred Mitchell Award Watch List: 

FAFA ASANTE, Rochester Community and Technical College (Minnesota) – NJCAA 
Sophomore from Brooklyn Park, MN….led the team in scoring with 81 points from 11 of 13 FG’s and 48 of 54 PAT’s…2012 Fred Mitchell Award Finalist….MCAC Southern Division Kicker of the Year….Region XIII Kicker of the Year….three-time Special Teams Players of the Week for the team….averaged 60 yards per kickoff….joined several teammates at a Halloween party on October 25 for children of those in the military….visits local elementary schools to mentor children

NICK AUSSIEKER, Illinois State University – FCS 
Junior from Wildwood, MO….led the team in scoring with 79 points from 11 of 13 FG’s and 46 of 49 PAT’s…2012 Fred Mitchell Award Finalist….scored 10 points in 34-31 win over South Dakota on September 29….scored 5 points in 17-10 win over Indiana State on November 2….scored 8 points against #1 ranked North Dakota State on November 17….averaged 58 yards on 72 kickoffs….volunteers with the football team at Special Olympics….volunteered with coaches and teammates by digging trenches for the Humane Society of Central Illinois

TRAVIS BOSANAC, Capital University (Ohio) – Division III
Junior from Strongsville, OH….led the Crusaders in scoring with 43 points on 10 of 13 FGs and 13 of 15 PATs….2012 Fred Mitchell Award Finalist….named Ohio Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week after accounting for more than half of Capital’s points with FG’s from 33 and 45 yards and a PAT in the Crusaders’ 13-7 win over Marietta on September 15….kicked 4 FG’s of 40+ yards during the season….scored 8 points in 40-21 win over Wilmington on November 10….hit the program’s longest FG since 1986 with a 49-yarder against John Carroll on September 29….averaged 56 yards on 36 kickoffs….plays in band each Sunday at Discovery Church in Gahanna, Ohio … took part in the Marc Levinson 5K Run/Walk for Lou Gehrig’s Disease in September … has taken part in a number of charitable activities as a member of the football team 

SAM BROCKSHUS, Minnesota State University – Division II 
Senior from Spencer, IA….led the Mavericks in scoring with 122 points from 21 of 27 FG’s and 59 of 61 PAT’s….2012 Fred Mitchell Award Finalist in top 10….First-Team All-NSIC South Division….set school record with 122 points breaking previous record of 97 points…career leading scorer with 257 career points….scored at least 10 points in 6 games in 2012 season and 10 times in his career….owns school record for most career FG’s (38), PAT’s (143) and single-season PAT’s (58)….scored 8 points including game-winner in 38-35 OT win over Northwest Missouri State in the playoffs on November 24….tied career-high with 12 points in 30-20 win over Winona State on October 20 including career-long 47-yard FG resulting in NSIC Special Teams Player of the Week honors….averaged 59 yards on 85 kickoffs….member of MSU’a and NSIC’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee….raised funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation….volunteers at youth and varsity football camps in his hometown….Fellowship of Christian Athletes….Kids Against Hunger volunteer….People and Christ Together food drive volunteer 

SERGIO CASTILLO, West Texas A&M University – Division II 
Senior from La Joya, TX….led the team in scoring with 129 points from 20 of 23 FG’s and 69 of 70 PAT’s….scored 9 points in 33-28 playoff game win over then-#4 Ashland University on November 24….scored 10 points in 34-13 playoff game win over then-#1 ranked Colorado State University-Pueblo on December 1….set school record by making 20 FG’s in a season and 64 consecutive PAT’s….First Team All-Conference….Daktronics First Team All-American and First Team All-Region….BSN Sports First Team All-American… Honorable Mention All-American….Little All-American First Team honoree….174 of 177 career PAT’s…ranks 3rd in school history with 288 points…set school record with 38 career FG’s…56-yard FG against Abilene Christian is 2nd longest in school history…weekly volunteer in Students in Free Enterprise to assist troubled youth with math, life lessons, college planning and job interviews…Step Up to Success volunteer speaker in Amarillo to counsel high school and middle school students….Toys for Juarez volunteer to collect toys in Amarillo and distribute them to children in Juarez, Mexico…Fellowship of Christian Athletes…Huddle Leader and member of the football team’s Bible study 

SAM COTE, Wheaton College (Illinois) – Division III 
Junior from Wheaton, IL … led the team in scoring with 74 points from 8 of 13 FG’s and 50 of 52 PAT’s… 2012 First Team All-CCIW place-kicker….2nd highest kicking points in the Conference….CCIW Special Teams Player of the Week after making 2 FG’s and completing a 20-yard pass on a fake punt against Millikin on October 27….made all 3 FG attempts against Carthage on October 6….made two mission trips through the Wheaton Football Ministry Partnership….served in ministry with FCA as an intern for the past three summers including leading a Summer Bible Study and leading a Speed Training Camp for six weeks….led the FCA mission trips for the past three years….campus representative for Compassion International….Chicago Hope Academy volunteer….leading ministry with Lead 222 by working with their student ministries conference in Germany 

ZACH CZAP, Lycoming College (Pennsylvania) – Division III 
Senior from Philipsburg, PA … 2nd on the Warriors in scoring with 52 points from 7 of 12 FG’s and 31 of 36 PAT’s… earned four Conference Player of the Week awards as a kicker in the past two years, including one in 2012 … a preseason Honorable Mention All-American in 2012…Honorable Mention All-American in 2011 after hitting 12 of 14 FG’s in first year as a starter…averaged 57 years on 54 kickoffs….participated in Favors Forward Spring Cleaning…helped with flood cleanup along the Loyalsock Creek with the football team … participated in the Student Senate of Lycoming College's haunted house. 

CURT DUNCAN, Carson-Newman (Tennessee) – Division II 
Senior from Morristown, TN….led the team in scoring with 102 points from 14 of 15 FG’s and 60 of 60 PAT’s…2012 Fred Mitchell Award Finalist in top 10….54-yard FG against Tusculum on November 3 was the longest in school history….led Conference kickers in scoring….four-time SAC Special Teams Player of the Week….school’s first kicker since 1984 to make 4 FG’s in a game….scored 14 points including 4 of 4 FG’s in playoff game against Valdosta State on December 1….scored 8 points in 38-35 playoff win over Lenior-Rhyne on November 24….scored 17 points in game against Lenior-Rhyne on September 15 to set school kick scoring record in a game….volunteer coach and referee for youth basketball and soccer….intern at Manley Baptist Church Student Ministry….serves at local missions projects each summer such as Appalachian Outreach and Food on Foot….volunteers at Luke 14 weekend for people with disabilities….Fellowship of Christian Athletes…Student-Athlete Advisory Committee 

EVAN FINCH, Hope College (Michigan) – Division III 
Senior from Ann Arbor, MI….led the team in scoring with 45 points from 4 of 4 FG’s and 33 of 35 PAT’s….2012 Fred Mitchell Award Finalist….USA College Football DIII Player to Watch…Second Team All-Conference….scored 10 points against Trine on October 27 including FG’s of 40 (career long), 32 and 28 yards….made all 7 PAT’s against Alma College on October 13 despite cold and wet conditions….108 career points from 12 of 16 FG’s and 72 of 76 PAT’s….works with Special Education students as a swimming teacher….Bible Study leader on campus….volunteers to help Ann Arbor Pioneer High School track team 

DAN FISHER, Bloomsburg University (Pennsylvania) – Division II 
Senior from Liverpool, PA….2nd on the team in scoring with 83 points from 9 of 14 FG’s and 56 of 59 PAT’s….named 2012 All-Region by Don Hansen’s Football Gazette…First Team All-PSAC Eastern Division Team….ranks 3rd in PSAC history in career kicking points and 4th in career FG’s….named Beyond Sports Network Division II Kicker of the Week….set school record with 52-yard FG in 30-14 win over Edinboro on September 8….helped renew a local town park as part of the Big Event community service program… Habitat for Humanity volunteer…Ronald McDonald House volunteer 

TANNER FRITSCHLE, Indiana State University – FCS 
Junior from Washington, IN….2nd on the Sycamores in scoring with 74 points from 15 of 18 FG’s and 29 of 30 PAT’s….2012 Fred Mitchell Award Finalist….made career-long 45-yard FG in the season opener at Indiana University….beat career-long 48-yard FG in road win over #1 North Dakota State….made a FG to end the first half in the team’s first four games….averaged 62 yards on 50 kickoffs….volunteers for Special Olympics, Susan G. Komen Foundation, Terre Haute Catholic Charities, Recess with the Sycamores and The Wabash Riverside Development Cleanup 

JOHN GAY, Harding University (Arkansas) – Division II 
Junior from Jonesboro, AR….led the team in scoring with 85 points from 14 of 18 FG’s and 43 of 43 PAT’s….set school record by making all 43 PAT’s during the season….ranked 2nd in the Conference and 13th in Division II with 1.27 FG’s per game….set school record with 78% FG %....14 FG’s in 2012 tied for 3rd most in school history…85 points in 2012 ranks 4th in school history….GAC Special Teams Player of the Week after making all 10 PAT’s and converting FG’s from 42 and 37 yards in 76-23 win over Arkansas Tech on October 27….16 points in win over Arkansas Tech tied for 3rd higher in school history…averaged 52 yards on 10 kickoffs….Walk for the Cure cancer walk volunteer including selling food to raise funds….wrote thank you notes to Harding donors in the annual Say Thanks Day and Highlighter Run….washed windows and cars for the elderly with the football team
