Fresno State Bulldogs 2013 Specialists

Our summer tour of FBS schools looks at the specialists for the Fresno State Bulldogs.

8/25/13 kicking update:
"The big thing, and I talked to (special teams coordinator Pete Germano) about this, we've already decided Colin is going to be our guy, and opposed to having Garrett hold, kick, hold, kick, just having him hold and get in a rhythm I think both of those guys are much more comfortable that way,' head coach Tim DeRuyter said. 'We'll probably practice that way as we go through this. We'll have to keep getting Garrett kicks in case something happens with Colin, but we're very comfortable with Colin being out guy.' Getting into a rhythm has helped everyone involved, said Swanson, who takes his kicks with receiver Davante Adams spotting the football. 'We did four consecutive kicks with Colin instead of switching every time like we normally do and I think that was good because it kind of got Colin in a groove along with Dylan and I think we were more efficient that way,' he said."

Kicker: Colin McGuire, freshman (Austin, TX / Westwood HS)
Last year's starter, Quentin Breshears, left the team to be a full-time student. McGuire is the likely candidate to take over the job this year, although he'll be competing with Dunn and possibly Swanson.

High School: Was a two-time, first-team All-District selection and two-time All-State honorable mention pick ... made 12-of-15 field goals and 36-of-37 extra points as a senior ... hit a long field goal of 53 yards as a senior, setting a new school record for longest made field goal ... was 8-of-10 on field goal attempts as a junior with a long of 47 yards and hit all 49 of his PATs ... his 49 PATs in 2011 set a new school record and he also holds the school record for most career PATs made (119) ... as a sophomore he was 34-of-36 on PATs and 4-of-6 on field goals with a long of 41 yards ... won the field goal competitions at the summer camps of Fresno State, Baylor and Arizona State.

Coaches Comments: "Colin has a really strong leg as he can boom the ball into the end zone on kickoffs and has the range to consistently hit 50-yard field goals. He is a guy that was out here last summer participating in our camp and we're excited to get him in here to compete for a job right away."
Kicker: Blake Dunn, senior (Fresno, CA / Washington State)
Walked-on at Washington State in 2009 and redshirted ... did not see game action in 2010 before transferring to Fresno State in the fall 2011 ... walked on at Fresno State in the spring of 2012.
Punter/kicker: Garrett Swanson, sophomore (Riverside, CA / Martin Luther King HS)
2013: Takes over the punting duties from graduated Andrew Shapiro.
2012: handled the kickoff duties all season long ... had 25 touchbacks on 88 kickoffs (28.4 percent of the time)
"This past offseason I have put in countless hours on and off the field to better myself, not in just the aspect of punting, but the entire Special Teams game. My long snapper (Dylan Detwiler) and I have been working on becoming more efficient with timing and placement of every kick. We also received some young talent this summer with the addition of place kicker Colin McGuire, and us three as a unit strive to be one of the most disciplined and efficient units this coming season. Overall the special teams unit at Fresno State works towards being the best we can be because that is what is our team deserves."
Long snapper: Dylan Detwiler, sophomore (Hemet, CA / Hemet HS)
2012: Took over the long-snapping duties mid-way through the season ... played in a total of six games
