Houston Cougars 2013 Specialists

Our summer tour of FBS schools looks at the specialists for the Houston Cougars.

Kicker: Ty Cummings, freshman (Southlake, TX / Carroll HS)
Cummings is the frontrunner to replace graduated Matt Hogan.

High school: Three-star recruit by ESPN, Rivals, Scout and 247Sports ... No. 1 kicker nationally by Scout ... one of the nation's top kickoff specialists ... earned second team all-district honors as a senior and honorable mention all-district honors as a junior
Kicker: Kyle Bullard, sophomore (Boerne, TX / Samuel V. Champion HS)
2012: Did not see any action as a backup kicker to Matt Hogan.
2011: Redshirted.
"This past offseason I have been really focusing on goals that I have set for myself. Also, what my expectations will be for the season, such as secure the job as a starter and make the travel team. I hopefully will be able to earn a scholarship, which would help my family and I out a tremendous amount. I also have been striving to be as close to perfect as I can be in everything I do on and off the field."
Punter: Richie Leone, senior (Roswell, GA / Roswell HS)
Leone was a Ray Guy Award semifinalist each of the past two years.
"This off season I have placed a big emphasis on being well conditioned. By that I mean I have been running a lot and am in the best shape of my life right now. I'm looking to improve exponentially this and I have spent the month of June with Coach Mike McCabe training in Pensacola. As far as this season I am really excited about the new conference that we are in which has created some great opportunities for us. I am just taking it one punt at a time and focus on the fundamentals."
Punter: Sam Martin, sophomore (Texas City, TX / Texas City HS)
"This offseason I have really been focusing on conditioning my legs so they can last throughout the entire season. I have been doing alot of extra running and hopefully that will help me not die out towards the end of the season."
Long snapper: Nolan Frese, sophomore (Roanoke, TX / Keller HS)
Frese takes over for departed senior Brandon Hartson who held the starting position for four straight years.
"I have personally been working very hard this off season by strengthening my snap speed and spiral. My goal next season is to simply make Richie's job as easy as I can. If I put the ball on his hip then that will give him one less thing he needs to worry about and hopefully allow us, as a punt team, to be one of the best in the country. We will have a new field goal kicker and holder this season, so as far as my field goal snaps go I want to take all the pressure off of those two by giving them a perfect ball every time."
