Idaho Vandals 2013 Specialists

Our summer tour of FBS schools looks at the specialists for the Idaho Vandals.

Kicker/punter: Austin Rehkow, freshman (Veradale, WA / Central valley HS)

"I've just been working out and kicking as much as possible. Looking to continue on improving leg speed and flexibility. As far as college goes I'm preparing for a successful year individually and as a team at the U of I and am looking to make an impact right away."

Rehkow’s name is a familiar one to high school football fans. After all, he’s the kicker who booted a 67-yard field goal that broke an 83-year old Washington High School record and was within one yard of the national record of 68. He doesn’t only kick them long, he’s accurate. He’s been highly recognized throughout Washington and particularly in the Greater Spokane League. As a junior, he was successful on 89 percent of his field goal attempts and was rewarded with all-state and all-GSL honors. He also was all-GSL as a sophomore and senior. During his senior season, he was the all-GSL punter as well after averaging 48 yards per kick. He averaged 39 per punt as a junior. The 67-yard field goal left an indelible impression. “I hit it really well. It was a really good feeling to see them signal that it was good and to know it helped my team. It was really special.”
Wide Receiver: Trent Cowan, freshman (Camas, WA / Union HS)
There was prior media speculation that Trent Cowan, younger brother of recently graduated Vandals punter Bobby Cowan, would fill the punter vacancy, however he has been working at wide receiver.
Long snapper: Marius Burgsmueller, junior(Dortmund, Germany)
2012: Played in all 12 games as the Vandals long snapper ... saw some action on the defensive line and had 14 total tackles (seven solo and seven assists) as well as a half-tackle for loss

2011: Earned the role as the Vandals’ long snapper and performed flawlessly throughout the season. Joined the Vandals in the spring of 2011

Prior: from Dortmund, Germany where he played club football ... was a member of the Duesseldorf team that won the 2008 GFL Junior Championship, and was a leader on the 2009 team as well ... was team MVP during his final season.
