New Mexico Lobos 2013 Specialists

Our summer tour of FBS schools looks at the specialists for the New Mexico Lobos.

Kicker: Justus Adams, senior (Albuquerque, NM / La Cueva HS)
Former walk-on kicker who won the starting job in 2012 and earned recognition from the Mountain West ... ... started as the kickoff specialist in 2011 ... an Academic All-Mountain West selection in both 2011 and 2012
Kicker:  Zack Rogers, sophomore (Rio rancho, NM / Rio Rancho HS)
Walk-on kicker looking to move up the depth chart in 2013 with the departure of the graduated Greg Rivara ... can find a job on kickoffs if he can increase his distance.
Punter: Ben Skaer, senior (Waterloo, IL / Waterloo HS)
Skaer was named to the 2013 Ray Guy Award Preseason watch list. He ranked 17th in the nation last season in punting with a 43.85-yard average per attempt. The Waterloo, Ill., native also helped the Lobos finish first in the Mountain West and 24th in the nation in net punting with a 39.0-yard average per attempt. Skaer earned MW Special Teams Player of the Week honors during the 2012 season finale against Colorado State, averaging 50.4 yards per attempt against the Rams. In that game, he had one punt travel 64 yards for a touchback and three others land inside the CSU 10. That game also capped a three-game streak in which Skaer earned College Football Performance Award honorable mentions for his play.
Punter/QB: Sam Gentry, freshman (Albuquerque, NM / Eldorado HS)
Valuable member of the scout team in 2012 as a quarterback and a punter ... was the team's only scout team quarterback and began his apprenticeship at punter under Ben Skaer.
Long snapper: Steven Romero, freshman (Albuquerque, NM / La Cueva HS)
High school:  three-time football letterwinner and two-time 1st team district 2-5A selection...2012 All-State Offensive Line selection
"Steven has come light years from where he was, and he's worked his tail off since last season. We're excited about where Steven is right now.... Evan [Jacobsen, prior 4-year starter] has been unbelievable in helping Steven with the deep snapping. I can't pretend to know all the ins and outs of long snapping, but to have who I believe is the best snapper in the country here to tutor and mentor a redshirt freshman kid is awesome." - Special teams coach Coleman Hutzler
