San José State Spartans 2013 Specialists


Our summer tour of FBS schools looks at the specialists for the San José State Spartans.

Kicker: Austin Lopez, sophomore (Euless, TX / Trinity HS)
2012: Named to the FWAA Freshman All-America team... Second-team All-WAC... Lou Groza Collegiate Placekicker Award semifinalist...One of two FBS kickers to make all his field goal tries in 2012 with 17-of-17...105 points are the most scored by a San José State kicker in a season... First freshman and second player in school history to score at least 100 points in a season
"I tore my meniscus so I just have been working to get back to 100%. Now that I am, I have been working on little things that got me this far. My plans for this upcoming season, just to be as good as I can be, find a way to top last years season."
Kicker: Alex Anastasi, sophomore (Pacific Pailisades, CA / Palidsades HS)
2012: Was a member of the team's traveling squad during the season
"To start off I was kicking at least 3 to 4 days every week each day, was either field goal and punt or kickoff and field goal each day. Besides the kicking and technique work, it was running and lifting 5 days a week with the team to build up strength and flexibility. Goals for the season: I'm actually playing soccer now for SJSU."
Punter: Harrison Waid, senior (Sunnyvale, CA / Fremont HS)
Named to the preseason watch list for the Ray Guy Award. 
San José State career leader for punting average at 43.0 per punt... Fourth among active Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) players in punting average at the start of the 2013 season... Fourth on the Spartans' career list for punting yardage (7,403 yards)... Single-game school record holder for best punting average in a game at 58.6 in the 2011 Colorado State win... Career long of 72 yards twice...  Has a career long 46 yard field goal against Utah State (11/13/10)... Takes care of the kickoff chores... 39 touchbacks in 192 kickoffs
Spring Game:  kicked field goals of 43 & 27 yards
Long snapper: Ryan DiSalvo, sophomore (Hollister, CA / Hollister HS)
2012: Earned all of the long snapping chores by the start of the season... Anchored the Spartans' single-season scoring kick scoring record of 108 points and a 41.1 team punting average... Was in on two special teams tackles in punt coverage.
"This off season I have been preparing with our kicker and holder keeping our rhythm solid. My goals and plans are too stay perfect with Austin and [WR/holder Daniel] Bradbury, and not have a bad snap throughout the year to help us win games."
