Our summer tour of FBS schools looks at the specialists for the South Alabama Jaguars.
Kicker: Aleem Sunanon, freshman (Orlando, FL / Olympia HS)
Frontrunner to replace Michael Chapuseaux, who graduated, on placekicking.
High school: three-year letterwinner at Olympia High ... Converted 8-of-10 field-goal attempts and also averaged 43.7 yards per punt his final year, earning all-state and all-metro honors ... Had two game-winning kicks, including one from 49 yards out as time expired, while 18 of his 38 punts were downed inside the opponents’ 20-yard line
"During this off season I have been working on keeping my consistency high. knowing that majority of field goals attempted in college are 45 yards and in, I have been working on staying consistent at those distances. My goal for this upcoming season is to go 85% or higher on my field goal percentage. This past summer I have been working on strengthening my leg. With the senior kicker graduating, I have moved into the starting position and plan to be very successful for our team. I will be taking care of the field goals alone for this season."Kicker/punter: Logan Gunn, freshman (Chatom, AL / Washington County HS)
Enters fall camp expected to handle kickoff duties ... Kicking for both teams in the annual spring game, converted 6-of-7 extra-point attempts while connecting on a 41-yard field goal for the Red team late in the second quarter.
2012: Sat out the year as a redshirt.
"This offseason I have been really focusing coming into my own as a combo specialist. I have worked a lot on my punting form and done a lot of drill work to catch my punting up to the level that my kicking is on. As far as field goals and kickoffs I have been working on having a steady routine for every single kick. If you do the same thing every time, it makes things a lot smoother when you find yourself in a pressure situation. Consistency has also been a big factor in my training. The mental side of kicking is huge and I have been trying to become stronger with that as well. Going through mental reps while sitting at home and things of that sort. This season I hope to help my team any way that I can."Kicker: Brandon McKee, freshman (Cumming, GA / South Forsyth HS)
High school: Earned two letters in football; he didn’t play football until his junior season ... Named first-team all-state, all-region and all-county as a senior after averaging better than 45 yards per punt ... Missed just one field goal his final year, connecting on 8-of-9 attempts, and was successful on all 25 extra-point tries while 80 percent of his kickoffs went for touchbacks ... Also lettered twice for the War Eagles in soccer.
February: "You get a chance to be a part of the first few teams of that program and it's exciting to be a part of that school's football history.... I'm hopeful of that and I think I can, without sounding too arrogant, I think I can contribute to the team and its success."Punter: Scott Garber, senior (Port St. Lucie, FL / St. Lucie West Centennial HS)
Entering his final season of eligibility, he’s the only individual to hold down the program’s punting duties ... Also is the primary holder for field goals and extra-point attempts ... Averaged 43 yards per punt at the program’s annual Blue-Red spring game.Long snapper: Austin Cole, junior (Dallas, GA / South Paulding HS)
2012: Saw action in all 13 contests ... Averaged 39.6 yards per punt, kicking a career-high 72 times, ranking ninth in the Sun Belt Conference average ... Had 15 punts downed inside the opposition’s 20-yard line while recording five kicks of 50 yards or longer
Expected to handle long-snapping duties at the end of spring practice
2012: Made 11 appearances as part of the Jaguars’ special teams unit ... Recorded four tackles on the season
"This off season from a training stand point I focused on increasing my speed and strength all while working individually with my punter and kicker perfecting our skills on the field. There's no doubt in my mind that this group of specialist is the best this program has had since the start a few years ago. Already two days into camp I've noticed a huge difference in attitude and confidence between us. My goals this season for me and my group are to be 100% in all phases not only the situations I am involved in, to perform for our team when we are called upon, and to win games. Future goals: I look forward to continuing on to the NFL following the end of my eligibility."Long snapper: Nick Bear, senior (Lakewood, CA / Mayfair HS)
Will compete for the position of long snapper once againLong snapper: Alex Hopson, freshman (Pell City, AL / Pell City HS)
2012: Appeared in each of the last seven contests ... Credited with an assist in his season debut, a double-overtime victory over Florida Atlantic
2012: Was a redshirt
"[during the offseason did] A lot of snapping but also the fundamentals the basic things that make you a solid snapper. I would do the team workouts and snap afterwards. This upcoming season I expect great things not only from the snappers and kickers but from the team as a whole. GO JAGS!!"
