Sports Illustrated 2013 Preseason All-American Kickers & Punters

Sports Illustrated announced its annual Preseason All-American Team yesterday. The key members (i.e. the kickers and the punters) for 2013 are as follows:

First Team

Kicker: Cairo Santos, Tulane
Punter: Kyle Christy, Florida
Junior punter who has averaged 44.3 yards on 96 punts in his career…Was named a finalist for the Ray Guy Award (nation’s best punter) in 2012. Set a single-game school record with a 54.3 yard per punt average against South Carolina in 2012…His 66 punts in the 2012 season tied for the fifth most in a single-season in UF history…Averaged 45.8 yards per punt in 2012 to set a school record…Second in school history with a 44.3 yard average in his career…Two year letter-winner for the Gators.
Second Team

Kicker: Jeff Budzien, Northwestern
Budzien was a semifinalist for the Groza Award a year ago when he converted 19-of-20 field goal attempts -- setting an NU single-season record for accuracy -- including 6-of-7 on tries from 40 yards or longer. He also matched his own school record by converting 50-of-50 point after attempts, moving into fifth place all-time in the Big Ten with 101 consecutive made PAT's (101-of-101 career). Budzien keyed several Northwestern victories during the Wildcats' 10-3 season a year ago, highlighted by his 5-for-5 performance on field goal tries in a 22-13 win over Boston College.
Punter: Kirby Van Der Camp, Iowa State
The senior from West Des Moines had 10 punts of 50 yards or more and averaged 41 yards on 77 attempts last season. He also dropped 29 punts inside the 20-yard line. Van Der Kamp’s career average of 42.8 yards per kick is second on the Cyclones’ career list behind Marc Harris, who averaged 43.1 yards between 1993-96. “We believe we’ve got the best punter in college football,” Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads said at Big 12 football media days. “If you really analyze him and what he’s done, pinning people inside the 20 with a very small amount of touchbacks. “Simply stated, I think he’s the best there is in college football.”
