Tulsa Golden Hurricane 2013 Specialists

Our summer tour of FBS schools looks at the specialists for the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.

Kicker: Carl Salazar, senior (Broken Arrow, OK / Air Force Academy)
With the dismissal of Daniel Schwarz in May, Salazar steps into the starting kicker role.
Came to Tulsa from the University of Oklahoma . . . did not play football at OU . . . played football at the Air Force Academy, but did not letter . . . participated in spring drills.
High school:  three-year letterwinner . . . connected on 22-of-26 field goals and 109-of-111 PATs throughout his career . . . converted 13-of-15 field goals as a senior . . . earned Tulsa World all-metro honors his senior season . . . also lettered four years in soccer
"Carl will be our guy on placements. We've hit (field goals) pretty consistently from 45 yards. From 40 and less, we're never going to flinch. Our guys really like him. He just has a quiet demeanor and goes out and does his stuff."  - head coach Bill Blankenship
Kicker: Redford Jones, freshman (Norman, OK / Norman North HS)
High school: "Jones came to kicking through what has become the traditional route. The longtime soccer player decided to give kicking a try in seventh grade and wound up winning the job. He's stuck with soccer, helping Norman North win both state and national titles last year with an undefeated record. But despite soccer being his first love, his heart is now drawn to football. He made the decision over the summer to give up soccer — including his senior season with the defending champions — to concentrate on the opportunity to kick in college."
Punter: Cole Way, junior (Tulsa, OK / Union HS)
A two-year letterwinner and starting punter . . . has played in 21 career games . . . came to Tulsa at mid-semester in January 2011 as a gray-shirt after signing with Tulsa in February 2010 . . . a left-footed punter . . . has averaged 38.8 yards on 111 punts in his career . . . has placed 31 punts inside the 20-yard line and 38 have been fair caught... Played in all 14 contests last year, handled the punting, kick-off and PAT/FG holding duties
Last October: "Against Iowa State, one of their coaches asked me if I'm really 6-8. Other than that, no one really mentions it. With long legs like I have, my height helps with my leverage on my punts. It helps me get really good hang time. My long snapper [Higuera] - he's been great. I've been spoiled with really good long snappers."
Punter/QB: Dalton Parks, freshman (Kansas City, MO / Staley HS)
High school: Had a 43.4 yard punting average as a senior . . . as the backup quarterback, led his team to three straight wins while the starting quarterback was sidelined with an injury . . . was named a Missouri Football Coaches Association second-team all-state selection as a punter . . . also earned first team all-conference and all-district accolades as a senior
Long snapper: Reymundo Higuera, sophomore (Gilbert, AZ / Perry HS)
2012: Played in all 13 games as a true freshman walk-on athlete . . . handled all the snapping duties on special teams . . . was named to the Conference USA all-Freshman team as a deep snapper
LB/long snapper: Blake Abbott, sophomore (Liberal, KS / University of Kansas)
