UCF Knights 2013 Specialists

Our summer tour of FBS schools looks at the specialists for the University of Central Florida Knights.

Kicker/punter: Shawn Moffit, junior (Orlando, FL / Dr. Phillips HS)
2012: first full season as the starting placekicker, ranked second on the team in scoring with 89 points... Was 10-for-14 in field goal tries, including a long of 49... Set the school record with 59 extra points made
"When special teams coach Mike Buscemi was hired this offseason, he immediately went to correcting Moffitt's kicking form to get better lift on the kicks. That included forcing Moffitt to attempt field goals from just a couple yards away from the goal posts. 'The further they get they always try to drive the ball in because they don't trust their leg,' Buscemi said. 'The biggest thing you have to do with a kicker is get him to trust his leg and try to get the ball up in the air.' Moffitt said the issues were small technical mistakes. Buscemi and O'Leary harped on the Dr. Phillips High grad to keep his head down and to fix the way he tilted his foot. Through most of camp, Moffitt saw better results in the height on his kick. But he had to fight through a demotion to earn the starting job. UCF promoted Rodrigo Quirarte to first team for much of the preseason camp before Moffitt overtook him toward the final days of practice. 'We're friends, but on the field we're enemies,' Moffitt said of the competition. 'We push each other, though, so that helps a lot'."
Kicker: Rodrigo Quirarte, junior (Queretaro, Mexico / John F. Kennedy School)
2012: Spent time as a backup kicker but did not get into a game

High school:  member of the soccer team which won the state title two-straight years (2009-10), and the National Championship of American Schools in Mexico in 2009... Served as team captain for the soccer program in 2010
Kicker: Sean Galvin, junior (Cork, Ireland / Lemon Bay HS)
2012:  Served as UCF's kickoff specialist, averaging 61.9 yards on 88 kickoffs including 31 touchbacks
2014: "With his new career in the US ahead of him Galvin admits his former dreams of lining out in Croke Park were over. Until his college was picked to take part in the inaugural Croke Park Classic game that is, which will see UCF open the 2014 NCAA football season in Ireland against Penn State. 'It’s insane,' he says, 'I’ve a load of cousins in Bandon and around Cork who’ve never seen me play so to think they’ll get to see me in the home of the GAA, it’s just great. 'I mean, when I was growing up I’d often see Diarmuid O’Sullivan and I’d run up him and annoy him about how I was going to follow in his footsteps and line out for Cork in Croke Park. 'I always thought it would be playing hurling or Gaelic football, I never, ever, thought it would be playing American football'."
Punter: Caleb Houston, freshman (Cleveland, TN / Walker Valley HS)
Takes over punting duties following the graduation of Jamie Boyle. Served as the backup punter and dressed for each game last year, but did not see action.
Spring Game: averaged 41.6 yards on 8 punts, witha long of 56 yards
Long snapper: Scott Teal, junior (Longwood, FL / Lake Brantley HS)
2012: Saw game action in all 14 contests on special teams as the Knights' long snapper
Long snapper: Gage Marsil, freshman (Deltona, FL / Pine Ridge HS)
2012: Did not see game action while working with the scout team
