UNLV Rebels 2013 Specialists

Our summer tour of FBS schools looks at the specialists for the UNLV Rebels.

Kicker: Nolan Kohorst, senior (Henderson, NV / Green Valley HS)
Named Preseason First Team All-Mountain West by Athlon, Sporting News and Lindy's and second team by Phil Steele's ... Heads into his final season with 29 career field-goals made, which ranks sixth in school history ... Needs five more field goals to move into a tie with Joey DiGiovanna (34 from 1983-85) for fifth place on the program's career list ... Will go into 2013 ranking second in school history for career extra-point percentage at .977 ... The first scholarship place-kicker signed by UNLV since former Rebel great Sergio Aguayo in 2003.
“I feel like I have more confidence. I feel the coaches have more confidence in me, too. It doesn’t mean I’m not going to work any harder. It doesn’t mean I’m not going to be coaching up our long snappers every day or our holders every day or our backups every day. I’ve just got to keep working.”
"He worked in the offseason with ex-Rebels kicker Daren Libonati, the former Thomas & Mack Center executive director, to change his approach by creating more of an extension, allowing Kohorst more accuracy and range. 'Coming into (training camp), I was a little worried, but I think right now I’m sitting in a good spot for the season,' Kohorst said. Coach Bobby Hauck said he would feel comfortable letting Kohorst kick from 50 yards at Sam Boyd Stadium and from longer in higher-altitude locations. 'He had a really nice spring,' Hauck said. 'I think he improved, and I think it’s carried on to camp'.”
Punter/kicker: Logan Yunker, sophomore (Las Vegas, NV / Arbor View HS / U Nevada-Reno)
A punter who looks to earn his first collegiate playing time this fall ... Listed as the No. 1 punter for the Rebels after spring practice ... A local product that transferred home after spending one year up north.

High school: A two-year letterman ... Named first team all-conference as a punter as a senior and second team as a kicker ... Also played TE and OLB as well as lettering in lacrosse for the Aggies ... Left holding all of Arbor View's kicking and punting records.
"Yunker, a sophomore who sat out last football season under NCAA transfer rules, is the leading candidate to become the Rebels' punter. He is competing with freshman Nicolai Bornand for the starting job. A hamstring injury has hampered Bornand, allowing Yunker to edge in front. But Yunker wants his teammate healthy for a stronger position battle. 'I always feel like I do 10 times better with competition,' he said. Coach Bobby Hauck said Yunker (6 feet 2 inches, 200 pounds) has the makings to be a quality punter. 'He's got decent mechanics,' Hauck said. 'He gets it off fast, and he's really been hitting the ball well. If I had to choose something I like best about him, he operates fast. When the punter operates fast, you don't have to protect much'.”
LB/punter: Nicolai Bornand, freshman (Santa Barbara, CA / Dos Pueblos HS)
High school: "I start as middle line-backer, tight end ,kicker, punter, Captain of the defense and the team. I am a strong leader and feel that I am an important part of the team. Sophmore year I received honorable mention all league and last year as a junior I received first team all league. This year I received All County Overall MVP, All League MVP, All CIF defensive player ,Team Overall MVP and made the All Area Team."
