Utah Utes 2013 Specialists

Our summer tour of FBS schools looks at the specialists for the Utah Utes.

Kicker: Andy Phillips, sophomore (Draper, UT / Winter Sports School)
Walk-on came out of spring as the starting place kicker ... also the early favorite to handle kickoffs.

Attended Westminster College in Salt Lake City as a part-time student (never enrolled full time) ... competed on the U.S. Ski Team as an alpine racer from 2007-2011 ... graduated from the Winter Sports School, a high school dedicated to elite winter sports athletes
“It actually all started with a family Thanksgiving football game where my brother and I were trying to beat each other out for longest field goal. Then all of a sudden a New Year’s resolution came that I should make a Pac-12 team and try and be a kicker. So I worked my guts out and (special teams) coach (Jay) Hill gave me an opportunity and I just jumped on it....
I’ve been here since last summer just kind of behind the ranks watching Coleman (Petersen) and Nick Marsh — working hard and not really getting much notice. Now it’s nice to finally be kicking consistently and doing my part to help out the team.”
Kicker: Jamie Sutcliffe, freshman (Thousand Oaks, CA /  Thousand Oaks HS)
Enters fall camp as the second string place kicker.

High school: played in CIF Northern and Ventura County All-Star games ... team captain ... set a record for PATs in a game ... played soccer on an Elite Academy team
Kicker: Jon Halliday, sophomore (Sandy, UT / Palomar JC)

Punter: Tom Hackett, sophomore (Melbourne, Australia / Scotch College)
Will take over punting position following graduation of Sean Sellwood
Walk-on from Australia has earned a scholarship ... projected to start at punter and holder ... specializes in sky kicks and placing the ball inside the opponent 5-yard line. Played in nine games last year after making his first appearance in the third game of the season ... 25 punts for 972 yards (38.9 average) ... downed 15 of his 25 punts inside the 20-yard line, including seven inside the 10-yard line and four inside the 5-yard line ...  long punt of 58 yards against Arizona State
"Sean Sellwood taught me everything he knows, and coach (Jay) Hill knows a lot about it too. With that knowledge, I'll be able to make a name for myself, I think."
Punter: Chris Van Orden, junior (Salt Lake City, UT / Snow College)
Walked on to the team on the spring and established himself as the No. 2 punter ... has three years to play two.

NJCAA second-team All-American for Snow College in 2011 ... first-team all-WSFL ... 41 punts for 1,672 yards as a junior (40.8 average) ... seven punts inside the 20-yard line ... 38 punts for 1,574 yards (41.4) as a freshman in 2008
Long snapper: A.J. Merlino, junior (San Clemente, CA / Saddleback College)
Part-time student at the U. last fall did not play football ... walked on in the spring and split time as the first-string snapper
DB/long snapper: Michael Kirby, sophomore (Boise, ID / Centennial HS)
Walk-on safety was the backup snapper in spring ball.
Long snapper: Chase Dominguez, freshman (Orange, CA / Lutheran HS)
