Fred Mitchell Award September 2013 Recognizees, part 3

The Fred Mitchell Award recognized 26 place-kickers for their excellence on the football field and in the community during the month of September.

A blue-ribbon Selection Committee evaluates place-kickers that are nominated by their schools. Members of the Pro and/or College Football Hall of Fame on the Selection Committee include Tom Beck, Kevin Butler, Paul Hornung, Marv Levy, Steve McMichael, Don Pierson and Gale Sayers. Former football players and others that are active in their communities are also on the Selection Committee including Carl Allegretti, Sean Gothier, Teddy Greenstein, Michael Husted, Dan Jiggetts, Rick Kolaczewski, Connie Kowal, Greg Loberg, Tom Lynch, Patrick Murray, Carol Monroe, Jeff Michalczyk, Mark Murphy, Rob Perry, Michael Ritchey, Jeff Schebler, Caroline Schrenker, Jay Sebben, Bob Thomas, Wolfe Tone, Todd Wilkins, Gary Zauner and Rob Zvonar. There are 11 former college or NFL place-kickers on the Selection Committee, including Jeff Schebler (the inaugural Fred Mitchell Award recipient in 2009 and the highest-scoring place-kicker in NCAA history at any level), Tom Lynch (two-time recipient of the Award and the kicker on the 2011 NAIA National Champion Saint Xavier University Cougars) and Patrick Murray (2012 Fred Mitchell Award recipient and record-setting kicker from Fordham University where his 25 field goals was just one shy of the FCS record).

ANDREW MUZLJAKOVICH Olivet Nazarene University (Illinois) – NAIA 
Senior from Vicksburg, MI….leads the Tigers in scoring with 15 points from 3 of 4 FG’s and 6 f 6 PAT’s ...2012 Fred Mitchell Award Finalist….connected on a career-long 49-yard FG against St. Francis of Illinois on September 7 where he scored 8 points … averaging 64 yards on 14 kickoffs….Orphan Outreach volunteer including mission trip to Guatemala to help the children at orphanages celebrate Christmas….collected food door-to-door for a local food pantry….helped remodel a local home and improve the landscaping for the school’s Habitat for Humanity 

MIKE PHILLIPS McPherson College (Kansas) – NAIA 
Senior from Spring Branch, TX….leads the team in scoring with 37 points from 7 of 8 FG’s and 16 of 17 PAT’s…. scored 5 points in 23-17 win over Kansas Wesleyan on September 28….scored 14 points in 51-31 win over Bethel (Kansas) on September 21….named NAIA Special Teams Player of the Week after win over Bethel….averaging 59 yards on 28 kickoffs 

ZACH PULKINEN Bemidji State University (Minnesota) – Division II 
Senior from Minot, ND….2nd on the team in scoring with 17 points from 3 of 4 FG’s and 8 of 9 PAT’s…. scored 10 points in 34-27 win over Winona State on September 5….made career-long 40-yard FG against Winona State….averaging 62 yards on 18 kickoffs….Bemidji Elks Lodge volunteer 

RYAN SAMUELS Louisburg College (North Carolina) – NJCAA 
Sophomore from Fredricksburg, VA….has scored 29 points from 5 of 8 FG’s and 14 of 17 PAT’s….scored 4 points in 24-17 win over Dean College on September 28…. volunteer reader at Louisburg Middle School….Upwards Football Event participant 

TYLER SIEVERTSEN University of Northern Iowa – FCS 
Senior from Cedar Rapids, IA….2nd on the top 5 ranked Panthers in scoring with 38 points from 7 of 9 FG’s and 17 of 17 PAT’s….2012 Fred Mitchell Award Finalist….scored 11 points in 41-6 win over then-#9 McNeese State on September 28….scored 14 points in 26-7 win over Northern Colorado on September 21….scored 4 points in 28-20 win over FBS Iowa State on August 31….averaging 61 yards on 28 kickoffs….Just Read program volunteer to connect UNI student-athletes with elementary school students….Special Olympics volunteer….Kickers in the Midwest mentor…high school football camp volunteer….Salvation Army bell ringer

STEFAN TERLECKYJ Wayne State University (Michigan) – Division II 
Senior from Warren, MI….2nd on the team in scoring with 21 points from 2 of 3 FG’s and 15 of 15 PAT’s….2012 Fred Mitchell Award Finalist….owns school record for the most kicking points (259) which is also 3rd in school history behind two running backs…became school’s career leader in FG’s made with 37-yard FG at Lake Erie on September 21….scored 8 points in 38-27 win over Malone on September 28….owns school records for most career FG’s (35), career FG % (68.6%), career PAT’s (154), PAT’s in a season (70), kicking points in a season (106) and consecutive PAT’s made (has made last 61 PAT’s)….shares school record for longest FG (51 yards)….has made 9 of last 11 FG’s dating to 2012….averaging 60 yards on 13 kickoffs…helped sell merchandise for breast cancer awareness at a WSU women's basketball games ... collected small toiletry items to make basic needs bags for the Covenant House Michigan as part of the Wayne Cares program ... participated in United Way's Martin Luther King Day of Service by assisting the Motor City Blight Busters with a renovation project in metropolitan Detroit….math tutor….Motor City Makeover neighborhood clean-up 

GRIFFIN THOMAS Jacksonville State University (Alabama) - FCS
