NFL Week Nine: Halloween with Caleb Sturgis & Mike Nugent

Thursday night. Halloween. Bengals at Dolphins.

With the game tied 17-17, Cincinnati kicker Mike Nugent hit a 54 yard field goal to give the Bengals the lead with 1:29 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Miami subsequently drove the ball, and kicker Caleb Sturgis connected from 44 yards to re-tie the game with 16 seconds left on the clock.

While a safety in overtime ultimately decided the game 22-20 in Miami's favor, a non-kick was part of the discussion afterward. Earlier in the extra period, Cincinnati head coach Marvin Lewis opted to punt rather than attempt a 57 yard field goal. Kicker Mike Nugent commented after the game:
“Once you get above 50 the percentages go down, especially from 55 the percentages aren't the same. It's tough for me because I look at it as me being the kicker but if you look at it as a coach's point of view you have to be objective. As much as I wanted to be out there at the end of the day it's probably the right decision because that's a tough call for coach. That's what makes being a head coach one of the hard parts right there....

I don't know. Something about this game tonight. A loss has never stung this much. I don't know what it is about tonight, but this one hurt.”
