Toronto Argonauts Kicker, Punter & Snapper News

September 24, 2015 - kicker Justin Palardy signed to practice squad
Justin Palardy figured he was done with pro football. The 27-year-old was helping coach a bantam boys squad in his native Truro, N.S., and preparing for a career in law enforcement when he received a surprise phone call from Toronto Argonauts GM Jim Barker on Wednesday night. On Thursday morning, Palardy was back lining up field goals after joining the Argos practice squad. 'I was completely focused on my life after football,' Palardy said. 'I didn't think I was ever going to play again and it didn't bother me at all, I was ready to move on. But 15 minutes before (the bantam team's) practice I was on the phone with Mr. Barker. I felt bad breaking the news to the kids I was coaching, I felt pretty emotional and like I was letting them down. But these opportunities don't come around very often and this could be the last one of my life so I had to jump on it, ride it and see where it goes.' Toronto (6-5) needs a punter/kicker with incumbent Swayze Waters (groin) sidelined. The Argos also have American punter/kicker Michael Palardy -- no relation -- on the roster." - CP24

September 22, 2015 - injured kicker Swayze Waters out six weeks
It appears the Toronto Argonauts are in the market for another kicker. According to CTV Toronto's Lance Brown, Swayze Waters is out for six weeks with a groin injury. University of Tennessee product Michael Palardy has been brought in this week but head coach Scott Milanovich has yet to make a decision for Saturday's game against the Redblacks in Ottawa. Palardy has spent time in training camp with the Oakland Raiders and St. Louis Rams." - TSN

August 23, 2015 - Swayze Waters kicks Argos to win over Redblacks
"Swayze Waters gave the Ottawa Redblacks the boot Sunday afternoon. Waters kicked two crucial fourth-quarter field goals to earn the Toronto Argonauts a wild 30-24 win over visiting Ottawa. Waters, back after missing six games with a knee injury, also had seven punts for a gaudy 50.6-yard average and posted a 65.8-yard mark on four kickoffs. Waters also made a hard tackle on Ottawa's Chris Williams on one punt return. Waters's performance earned him a game ball after the contest." - CBC

July 1, 2015 - kicker Ronnie Pfeffer signed
"Pfeffer, a five-foot-11, 185-pound native of Kitchener, Ont., recently attended training camp with the Ottawa Redblacks. In 32 games over four seasons at Wilfrid Laurier University, he punted 278 times for 10,010 yards while adding 7,159 kickoff yards. The two-time OUA all-star and 2014 CIS all-Canadian also converted 57-of-81 field goal attempts with a long of 50 yards as a Golden Hawk." - Sportsnet
June 30, 2015 - injured kicker Swayze Waters out 4-6 weeks
"The Toronto Argonauts are searching for a next kicker for the next month or so, as the team announced Tuesday that Swayze Waters will be sidelined 4-6 weeks. Waters led the CFL in kicking points in 2014 and was the league's second-most accurate kicker behind only Paul McCallum, connecting on 90.4 per cent of field goal tries and all 40 extra point attempts. He also led the league in punting with a 47.7-yard average. He was injured during the first half of the team's 26-11 season-opening win in Fort McMurray vs. the Edmonton Eskimos, exiting the game after missing his first field goal try of 2015." - CFL

June 27, 2015 - WR Dave Stala steps in as emergency kicker in win over Eskimos
"Kicker Swayze Waters left the game with a quadricep injury late in the first half and did not return. Veteran receiver Dave Stala, signed by the Argos a week ago, was pressed into kick and punt duties. The 35-year-old has been an emergency kicker before in his career, but not for several seasons. Stala had 340 punting and kicking yards, including a 43-yard punt single. His successful field goal attempt in the fourth quarter was called back for a time count violation and Stala missed the second attempt from 36 yards. 'I came here as the sixth receiver, but the more you can do . . . I've kicked in the past and they gave me the opportunity,' Stala said. 'What I did out there was pretty good. I've still got to get better, but it helped the team win a football game'." - CBC

June 14, 2015 - punter/kicker Andrew Muzljakovich released

May 14, 2015 - punter/kicker Andrew Muzljakovich signed
"Muzljakovich spent his collegiate career at Olivet Nazarence University in Bourbonnais, Illinois. In 11 games in 2013, he had 59 punts for 2,443 yards and 43 kickoffs for 2,674 yards while hitting 13 of 17 field goals attempts. The Vicksburg, Michigan native led the MSFA Midwest League in punting while ranking second in the league in net kickoffs and field goal percentage en route to being named a AFCA-NAIA first-team All-American and MSFAA first-team as a place kicker." - Argonauts

May 12, 2015 - long snapper Dan MacDonald drafted in 7th round
"MacDonald started as a receiver with the Guelph Gryphs, but became their long snapper two seasons ago. In his four years with the Gryphs, MacDonald caught five passes for 39 yards, rushed once for three yards and made 11.5 tackles on special teams. With the Argos, he'll be battling former Gryph Jake Reinhart for the long snapper job." - Guelph Mecury

November 27, 2014 - CFL names Swayze Waters special teams player of the year
"The 27-year-old Waters’ season began on a sombre note when his best friend, Tait Hendrix, died in a motorcyle accident during training camp. Waters wore No. 34 this season — Hendrix’s high school number — and dedicated the ’14 season to his friend’s memory. The six-foot, 180-pound Waters led the CFL in scoring (192 points), field goals tried (52), made (47), punting (47.7 yards) and kickoffs (65.2 yards)." - Toronto Star

November 11, 2014 - kicker/punter Swayze Waters earns weekly CFL honors
"Waters who has been named CFL Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time in 2014, this time for his performance during Week 20 against Ottawa. In Week 20, Swayze helped contribute to the Argonauts’ 23-5 win over the REDBLACKS by connecting on three (3) field goals (a long of 45-yards) and converting his two extra point attempts for a total of 11 kicking points which helped him finish with the most points scored in the CFL this season (184).  In addition, Waters blasted nine (9) total punts for 428 yards and an average of 47.6. Waters finished the year tops in punting average as well with 48 yards per punt." - Argonauts

October 4, 2014 - Swayze Waters kicks six field goals in win over Eskimos
"The Argos (5-8) gave up two touchdowns late in the first half and another in the dying seconds of the game, plus a two-point convert, but came away with a shaky 33-32 victory over the Edmonton Eskimos (9-5) in the first of four straight home games. Ricky Ray threw two TD passes to Chad Owens and Swayze Waters booted six field goals and a single as the Argos went on the attack from the start....  Waters kicked six field goals, but missed from 21 yards and his teammates, including holder Trevor Harris, poked fun at him after the game. Milanovich said the team has 'a lot of trust' in Waters. But the coach wished the offence had finished off more drives with TDs. 'It’s huge for Swayze to be able to keep the momentum going when the offence stalls, pretty much every time we cross the 50. He’s a great weapon for us'." - The Star

September 2, 2014 - Swayze Waters punts
"Waters' contributions mostly didn't show up on the scoreboard this week, as the Argonauts didn't attempt a single field goal in a 13-12 loss to Hamilton Monday. His only scoring play was a 77-yard rouge off a punt, which was impressive in its own right. What really stood out were the two punts he dropped inside the Tiger-Cats' one-yard line, though, both of which resulted in subsequent Hamilton safeties. On the day, Waters had 13 punts for 696 yards, an average of 53.5 yards per punt." - Yahoo

August 20, 2014 - Swayze's new shoes
"Swayze Waters tugged on new electric blue kicking shoes this season, and his leg turned into a thunderbolt. In those blue shoes, Waters is now one of the flashiest kickers in the CFL, and he backs up that style with substance. The Toronto Argonaut veteran was named the CFL’s special teams player of the month for July by leading all kickers in average yards per punt (46.8) and tying for most field goals made (13) and for field goal percentage (92.9). For the season, he’s been good on 19-of-22 attempts field goal attempts and averaging 47 yards a punt. Last season, while kicking with an old shoe, a leg injury limited him to eight regular season games. He finished the season good on 18 of 25 field-goal attempts for a 72 per cent success rate. This year, he’s electrifying. Of course, the blue shoes are not filled with super powers, but as long as the superstitious Waters believes in those shoes, who’s to argue? Pro athletes are known to be superstitious and Waters is no different. He also has this thing about his socks. He often changes his socks three times a game. He’s not as fussy as he once was. 'I don’t do it every game any more, but I used to wear a pair of socks for warm-up, a new pair of socks for the first half and another pair for the second half'.” - Toronto Star

August 14, 2014 - kicker/punter Noel Prefontaine to sign & retire
"Noel Prefontaine will retire from the CFL as a member of the Argonauts. The veteran kicker/punter will sign a one-day contract at Sunday’s game between Toronto and the B.C. Lions at the Rogers Centre.Prefontaine spent most of his 16-season CFL career in Toronto, winning Grey Cup championships with the team in 2004 and 2012.... Prefontaine made club history as the only Argo to ever be named a CFL all-star punter on six occasions. He was also named an East Division all-star 11 times (eight at punter, three at placekicker). He holds Argonaut records for total punts (1,464), all-time punting yards (67,061), and most punting yards in a single game (744). He also holds club records for most all-time kickoffs in a career (688), and most kickoff yards (40,521)." - Toronto Star

July 30, 2014 - kicker Swayze Waters receives monthly honor
"Toronto Argonauts kicker and punter Swayze Waters was named the CFL Special Teams Player of the Month for July. Waters went 13-of-14 (92.9%) kicking field goals to open the season, as well as boasting the league’s highest punting average at 46.8 yards. The native of Jackson, Mississippi matched a career-high in Week 2 by making five field goals against the Calgary Stampeders, including a 51-yarder, equaling his career long. The single season record holder in points at the University of Alabama-Birmingham is currently third in kicking points with 50." - CFL

June 16, 2014 - long snapper Jake Reinhart
"Long snapper Chad Rempel’s departure left Argos head coach Scott Milanovich with some definite concerns. While the long snapper isn’t a player most fans worry, the position can cost a head coach some sleepless nights. That’s where Jake Reinhart enters. Reinhart is a linebacker by trade out of Guelph but was savvy enough while with the Gryphons to heed some advice from long-time defensive line coach Brian Cluff who suggested learning how to properly ‘long snap’ a football might be a good idea for his football future. 'I didn’t focus on it until my later years in university,' Reinhart said. 'We had a defensive line coach, coach Cluff, who said you really have a shot in the CFL if you can long snap so I started working with him and I really started to get good at it. I just kept working at it and here I am now.' Reinhart was in camp with the Argos last year and got some valuable tutelage time with Rempel but didn’t stick with the team. 'He was a really nice guy,' Reinhart said. 'He would show me different hand placements on the ball and how to really swing your hips back when you fire it so he taught me a few things for sure.' Little did he know, but Reinhart was making quite the impression himself a year ago. 'With Reinhart here last year I felt very comfortable with him as did (general manager) Jim Barker and now that (special teams coach) Jim Daley has had a chance to see him he feels pretty good about him as well so we’ve been fortunate there'.” - Toronto Sun

June 1, 2014 - long snapper Michael Benson signed
"Argos announce they have Signed Long Snapper Michael Benson & released OL Scott Mitchell." - Argonauts

April 15, 2014 - long snapper Jake Reinhart signed
"Guelph, Ontario native Jake Reinhart re-joins the Argonauts after attending 2013 training camp with the club as a long snapper. He had a successful five-year football career at the University of Guelph where he was a team captain. In 2011, he finished third in the CIS with 63 tackles, 1 sack, and 2 forced fumbles. That year, he was named Guelph’s Defensive Player of the Year and named an Academic All-Canadian. In his junior year, he was the recipient of the Gryphons’ 2010 Special Teams Award after finishing the season with 17 tackles and 3 returned kickoffs in 9 games." - Gryphons

February 11, 2014 - kicker Swayze Waters re-signed; Noel Prefontaine released
"The Toronto Argonauts have made some decisions in their kicking game, re-signing K/P Swayze Waters and releasing veteran P/K Noel Prefontaine.... Waters joined the Argos in 2012 and was part of the special teams unit that helped host and hoist the 100th Grey Cup in Toronto, converting two (2) field goals in the win. Waters finished the 2012 season 32 of 43 on field goals including a memorable 51-yard game-winning kick in week 19 against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.  In 2013, Waters was hurt in the home opener but returned later in the season to go 18 of 25 on field goal attempts with a long of 50-yards.  He has also put himself into the Argos record books as his two-season kickoff average of 66.2 yards ranks first all-time amongst Argos kickers." - CFL

February 7, 2014 - kicker Josh Jasper signed
"Former New Orleans VooDoo Kicker Josh Jasper has signed with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League.... Jasper played for LSU from 2007-2010. Jasper was a consensus All-American Kicker in 2010, and the only consensus All-American Placekicker in LSU History. During his career at LSU Jasper made 47 of 56 field goals, making him the most accurate kicker in LSU history." - sportsNOLA
