New York Jets Kicker, Punter & Snapper News

September 12, 2015 - kicker Nick Folk's contract restructured
"They converted $1.78 million of Folk's $2.5 million base salary into signing bonus, according to ESPN NFL Insider Field Yates. The move creates $1.19 million in cap space for 2015. The downside is that it pushes $593,000 onto the Jets' cap in each of the next two seasons. It raises Folk's cap numbers to $3.28 million and $3.59 million in 2016 and 2017, respectively." - ESPN

July 28, 2015 - kicker Andrew Furney released
"Furney spent last summer with the Jets, and kicked a 51-yard game-winning field goal in New York's preseason opening win over Indianapolis. He was cut after training camp, but re-signed to a reserve-future contract last December. The move Tuesday leaves veteran Nick Folk as the only kicker on the Jets' roster." - Fox Sports

March 12, 2015 - long snapper Tanner Purdum re-signed
"Purdum, who became an unrestricted free agent Tuesday, has been close to perfect in his five seasons as the Jets' snapper. He's made every one of the punt and placement snaps in that time, 783 snaps over 83 regular- and postseason games, without a single fumble, wild snap or penalty.... Purdum, who celebrated his 29th birthday on New Year's Day, began his NFL career with the Chiefs in the 2009 preseason, was a final cut, then came to the Jets as a free agent the next year. Six years later, he's still not ready to leave." - Jets

January 23, 2015 - Bobby April named special teams coordinator
"The highly experienced April comes to us after previously spending time coordinating the special teams on the Raiders the past two seasons, then before that the Eagles (2010-12, with Bowles on the '12 staff), Bills ('04-09), Rams ('01-03), Saints (1996-99), Steelers ('94-95) and Falcons ('91-93). He won two Special Teams Coach of the Year awards, in 2004 and '08 with the Bills. Before April's pro coaching experience came his college work, at Ohio State, Southern Cal, Arizona, Tulane and Southern Miss." - Jets

December 30, 2014 - K Andrew Furney & P Jake Schum signed to futures contracts
"Furney (5'10", 210) was signed last year out of Washington State after getting a non-roster invitation to kick at the Jets' June full-squad minicamp. His big kick in the summer was a 51-yard field goal with 1:08 left to lift the Jets over the Colts, 13-10, in the preseason opener. That was his only FG try in our preseason games and he added two extra point kicks. Furney did not kick in the NFL this season.... Schum, like Furney, was signed after being a rookie camp invitee in May. Unlike Furney, he had made the NFL offseason rounds, signing with Cleveland in 2013 and Tampa Bay last year. This preseason he had six punts for the Jets, posting a 40.0-yard gross average and a 37.7-yard net. He spent less than a week on the Buccaneers' practice squad in November." - Jets

December 21, 2014 - kicker Nick Folk blocked by Patriots again
"Back in October, a 58-yard attempt on the final play of the game was blocked by Chris Jones, sealing the Pats' 27-25 victory. And Sunday, a 52-yard try with just over five minutes remaining was partially tipped by Vince Wilfork, preserving the 17-16 final score. Despite the cold weather, Folk made a kick from that distance in pregame warm-ups. It would have been 10 yards closer, except for Dont'a Hightower's sack of Geno Smith on the previous play. Folk had connected from 26, 23 and 37 yards earlier in the game. 'I feel like I was hitting the ball pretty well today,' Folk said. 'It's a bummer the last one; I didn't get a chance to see it go in. I hit it about as pure as you could hit the ball,' Folk added. 'I’d like to think it would have gone through'." - ESPN

December 7, 2014 - Nick Folk kicks five field goals in loss to Vikings
"Kicker Nick Folk connected on a 44-yard field goal with 23 seconds remaining to force overtime. It was Folk's fifth field goal of the day [36, 33, 22, 24 and 44 yards], one week after missing two kicks in a 16-13 loss to the Miami Dolphins." - The Morning Call

December 2, 2014 - kicker Nick Folk has hip flexor
"Kicker Nick Folk has a hip flexor injury and his status for New York's game at Minnesota on Sunday is uncertain. The usually reliable Folk missed two field goals against Miami on Monday night, and had another kick barely clear the crossbar. Coach Rex Ryan was not sure when Folk was hurt in the Jets' 16-13 loss or whether the injury contributed to his bad night. 'After the game, he informed us that he was having some discomfort in his hip,' Ryan said. 'We'll have to monitor that throughout the week'." - Fox Sports

December 1, 2014 - kicker Nick Folk misses pair in loss to Dolphins
"Folk missed two field goals in the Jets 16-13 loss to Miami, the second a 45-yarder that drifted wide left with 5:42 remaining in a 13-13 game. Earlier, with the Jets leading 10-0 and dominating the Dolphins, Folk was wide left on a 48-yarder in the second quarter. Folk, who entered the game having been successful on 18-of-20 attempts this season, with one of the misses a blocked 58-yard desperation attempt in New England, was gutted afterward, saying he felt 'terrible' and called the night 'a rough one. Just one of those nights,' he said.... 'I don’t think words can describe it,' Folk said. 'I wanted another chance to get this team back to winning ways … give us a chance in overtime.' There, of course, would be no overtime as the Jets tumbled to 2-10, the second-worst record in the NFL. Folk said on his first miss: 'I just over-hit it. I just missed it. Second one … same thing. I have to go back and look at the film. I just didn’t hit them well'." - NY Post

August 23, 2014 - Andrew Furney & Jacob Schum released
"Furney and Schum both signed at the end of their tryouts at the full-squad minicamp June 19. Furney, who also got a look from the Seahawks in May, had an All-Pac 12 career at Washington State. He got on the field for four plays in the three preseason games and hit his long field goal plus two extra points. Schum, who spent parts of the last year-plus with Tampa Bay and Cleveland. His six punts this preseason grossed 40.0 yards and netted 37.7." - Jets

August 7, 2014 - Andrew Furney kicks game winner
"Breaking into the NFL as a kicker is one of the tougher things on the planet to do, so when guys like former WSU kicker Andrew Furney get their chance to show what they can do, they have to make the most of it. Furney did just that on Thursday night when he drilled a 51-yard field goal for the New York Jets with just over a minute to go. It would prove to be the game winner. Of course, this is nothing new to Furney, who made a number of game-winning field goals in his career at Washington State, most notably in the 2012 Apple Cup to first tie then complete an 18-point, fourth quarter comeback. He also hit a 60-yarder against Eastern Washington at the beginning of that year." - Coug Center

August 2, 2014 - Green and White scrimmage
"That hookup led to a 33-yard field goal by Nick Folk, who later missed a 53-yard attempt wide right.... On that one series with the starters, he guided the offense to a 47-yard field goal by rookie kicker Andrew Furney." - North Jersey

June 19, 2014 - kicker Andrew Furney & punter Jacob Schum signed
"Both participated as non-roster invitees at the full-squad minicamp that concluded today. Furney (5’10”, 210) spent the past four seasons with the Washington State Cougars. He was twice named an All-Pac-12 selection for his kicking ability and twice named a Pac-12 All-Academic selection for his off-field efforts. He certainly has a powerful leg — his 60-yard make as a junior is the second-longest field goal in Pac-12 history. The 22-year-old rookie participated in the Seattle Seahawks' rookie minicamp in May. Schum (5’11”, 211) has spent parts of the last year-plus with the Buccaneers and Browns after finishing his collegiate career at Buffalo. The 25-year-old from Hamburg, NY, was waived by the Bucs last month." - Jets

June 17, 2014 - minicamp tryouts include two kickers, two punters
"The team does have six players in for tryouts, including ex-Steelers punter Drew Butler, punter Jacob Schum, kickers Andrew Furney and Carson Wiggs" - Profootballrumors

May 16, 2014 - minicamp tryouts include six specialists
The Jets have opened their three-day rookie minicamp at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center this morning.... 37 unsigned players invited to the minicamp as tryouts, including: LS Scott Albritton (colorado State), K Anthony Cantele (Kansas State), P Tom Hornsey (Memphis), K/P Michael Palardy (Tennessee), P Brian Saunders (Virginia Tech) & LS Kyle Stelter (Wisconsin - River Falls) - Jets

May 11, 2014 - punter/kicker Michael Palardy invited to minicamp
Following the draft, the Jets invited former Tennessee punter/kicker Michael Palardy. See his profile here.

May 5, 2014 - punter Ryan Quigley's jersey
"Michael Vick's new jersey number cost him $10,000 — all of it going to charity. The New York Jets quarterback negotiated for the number with punter Ryan Quigley, who previously wore No. 1, during workouts and the two came to an agreement. Quigley gave it up on condition that Vick pay $10,000 for it and donate all of the money to charity.... Vick plans to make a donation in Quigley's name to Teen Angel of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina — Quigley is a North Myrtle Beach native — and to the Boys and Girls Club of New York. "Most of the time in the NFL, if a veteran requests your number, you work out a financial agreement between the two players," Quigley said in the statement. "I was not interested in the money for myself. I wanted to find a way to help some others." - The Prince George Citizen

March 11, 2014 - kicker Nick Folk signs four-year deal
"According to a league source, Folk received a four-year contract worth $12 million. He did not receive a signing bonus, but rather, a $2.1 million roster bonus -- the only guaranteed money in the deal. That roster bonus will count against the Jets' salary cap in 2014, when Folk's cap figure will be $3.6 million. His cap figures for the remaining three years of the contract are scheduled to be $2.65 million, $2.75 million and $3 million. Folk will turn 30 years old in November. For 2015, 2016 and 2017, Folk can earn $250,000 more in each of those seasons if he makes the Pro Bowl. Folk's contract has no Pro Bowl bonus opportunity for 2014. Folk's only Pro Bowl appearance came during his rookie year, 2007." - The Star-Ledger

February 28, 2014 - kicker Nick Folk franchise tagged
"The franchise-tag amounts have yet to be announced, but the projection for kickers is $3.56 million. The tag deadline is Monday. Folk is coming off a career year in which he made 33 of 36 field goal attempts, including three game-winners in the fourth quarter or overtime. He was dubbed "Folk Hero" by coach Rex Ryan, and the Jets obviously didn't want to take a chance on losing him in free agency. After the season, Folk, who made $780,000 last season on his fourth consecutive one-year contract, said he deserved a long-term deal. By rule, if the sides don't reach an extension by July 15, Folk would play for the amount of the franchise tag." - ESPN
