March 19, 2015 - coach Matt Campbell discusses specialists
Q: Who’s going to be your kicker?
"I really don’t know yet. This spring we have (sophomore) Sam Vucelich out there. We will have some walk-ons competing with Sam this spring and summer, as well as Jameson Vest, a freshman kicker out of Georgia who will be competing when he gets here this summer."
Q: How about your punter?
"Nick Ellis is back after starting last year for us. But Michael Julian is going to get a chance to show what he can do this spring. Michael has a strong leg. He just needs to become more consistent." - Rockets
February 4, 2015 - kicker Jameson Vest signs
"Peachtree City, GA, Our Lady of Mercy - Jameson Vest is ranked as a three-star kicker by ESPN.com. Vest was also named an honorary captain, offensive MVP and special teams MVP as a senior. He recorded 1,058 passing yards, 998 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns in his senior season. He also had four field goals with a long of 45 yards. He was the offensive MVP and earned first-team all-county as an 'athlete' as a junior. Vest recorded 1,800 passing yards, 750 rushing yards and 17 total touchdowns. He also kicked five field goals, with a long of 48 yards. His sophomore season he was named honorable mention all-region kicker and recorded 360 passing yards, 400 rushing yards and six total touchdowns. He tallied four field goals, with a long of 35 yards." - Rockets
July 2, 2014 - kicker Jameson Vest commits
"Jeremiah Detmer is a senior and 2014 will make his last year in Toledo. Insert Jameson Vest, a kicker from the class of 2015 who committed to Toledo on June 22. Vest will be one of a three kickers on the Rockets' roster next season in what should be an interesting race for the starting job. Vest committed to UT over Georgia state and Texas A&M, both of whom had showed interest in the Fairburn, Georgia native. At 5-foot-10, 198 pounds Vest has a powerful leg with the ability to make 40-yard field goals consistently (at least distance wise). In 2013, as a junior at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic High School, Vest made a 47-yarder in a game, making five field goals overall and nailing 26 of 29 extra points." - Hustle Belt
March 18, 2014 - head coach Matt Campbell discusses specialists
"J.D. [Jeremiah Detmer] is taking on a bigger leadership role on our team, which might be a little unusual for a kicker. I will say this. I don’t think there is a better kicker in the country right now. You’re talking about a kicker who has made 36 of his last 37 field-goal attempts and had 38 touchbacks last year. And he can be our punter, too, if we need him. I’m not sure who can match that. I have a tremendous respect for Jeremiah, in every way, as a person and also how he conducts himself off the field. At punter, we have to replace Vince Penza. Nick Ellis is a walk-on who has earned the respect of our team. Michael Jullian is a tremendous punter as well as a skilled quarterback, so we are going to take a look at him at punter this spring. And of course, J.D. can punt if needed. At long snapper, we lose Matt Wall, so we have two young men battling for that spot. Brad Spelman is a grayshirt who joined us in January, and Zach Lozar is a sophomore who has shown signs that he can handle the position." - Toledo Rockets
