Arena Football League (AFL) Kicker News

August 21, 2014 - Nich Pertuit named Kicker of the Year
"The Arena Football League and the San Jose SaberCats announced today that Nich Pertuit has been named the Smitty USA Kicker of the Year. This is the first time Pertuit has earned this award. Last week, Pertuit was also named to the First-Team All-Arena Offense, his second career All-Arena selection. 'We are very proud that Nich has earned this award,' said Owner and Head Coach Darren Arbet. 'He was incredibly consistent, and delivered in big situations for us all season.' Pertuit (5-11, 195, UIW – San Antonio) was a true weapon this season, topping the AFL in most individual kicking categories during the regular season. He led the league with 128 extra points converted, total points scored with 155, points per game with 8.6 in addition to going a perfect 9-for-9 on field goals. From April 26th to June 14th, Pertuit converted an incredible 47 straight point after attempts. Pertuit also converted all 15 of his extra point attempts during the postseason and both of his field goal attempts." - SaberCats

August 14, 2014 - All-Arena kickers
"San Jose Sabercats kicker Nich Pertuit was selected First Team All-Arena after connecting on 128-of-138 PAT tries and all nine of his field goal attempts in 2014. Pertuit was a Second Team selection with the SaberCats in 2012.... Nine more players earned Second Team All-Arena honors, including Pittsburgh Power kicker Julian Rauch." - AFL

July 26, 2014 - Garrett Lindholm kicks Talons to overtime win
"The San Antonio Talons (3-15) defeated the New Orleans VooDoo (3-15), 38-35. ... Bassuener, determined to convert on this drive, led the Talons to the VooDoo eight yard line before kicker Garrett Lindholm drilled a 21-yard field goal to clinch the win for San Antonio." - AFL

July 19, 2014 - Julian Rauch kicks another game winner for Power
"The Pittsburgh Power (14-3) defeated the Iowa Barnstormers (6-11) in walk-off fashion on Saturday night thanks to the foot of kicker Julian Rauch whose 22-yard field goal as time expired gave the Power their 11th-straight win on the 2014 season.... The Power received the ensuing kickoff, held possession and worked the clock down. After a few shots at the end zone, Julian Rauch was called upon for a chance at his second game-winning field goal of the year. As time expired, the kick sailed through the uprights giving the Power their 11th-straight win 59-56." - Power

June 14, 2014 - Julian Rauch kicks game winner for Power
"Fate and two kickers — one who justified his coach's trust in him, another who was hurt on the game's first play — decided the Pittsburgh Power's 57-56 victory against the Philadelphia Soul on Saturday night before a crowd of 7,804 at Wells Fargo Center. Power coach Ron James put the game on the right foot of kicker Julian Rauch, who booted a 23-yard field goal on the last play of the game. Rauch missed two extra-point attempts earlier in the game, but James wasn't worried. Rauch is now 4 for 4 on field-goal tries this season. 'It was a no-brainer,' James said.... The Soul was operating at a disadvantage after their kicker, Carlos Martinez, hurt his leg on the opening kickoff." - Tribune-Review

April 18, 2014 - Iowa Barnstormers kicker Ross Gornall
"A couple weeks ago, Ross Gornall was an unemployed kicker living in Cleveland and waiting for a team to call — or at least one to pick up on the other end. 'You just try to network, get your name out there any way you can, send tapes to the front offices, try to be annoying,' he said. 'There are a lot of good kickers out there who deserve their shot, so you've got to stand out one way or another and try to get your name out any way you can.' The most annoying thing Gornall did? 'Repeated phone calls,' he said. 'If you're not going to answer, I'm going to keep calling back. It gets to a point where it's like, 'OK, this kid is determined and it shows.' Gornall, who had a brief stay with the Barnstormers last year, returned to Iowa last week and went 9-for-9 on extra-point opportunities against San Antonio." - Des Moines Register
