August 24, 2015 - summer specialists
"EKU must find a replacement for all-conference kicker Andrew Lloyd. The Winchester, Virginia native handled all but two kickoffs and took 22 of the team's 23 field goal attempts in 2014. Thirty-eight of his 77 kickoffs went for touchbacks and he converted 17 of those field goal kicks. Sophomore Keith Wrzuszczak is back to handle punting duties. He is continuing the recent EKU tradition of Australian punters that began with Jordan Berry in 2010. Berry is currently in camp with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Wrzuszczak averaged 36.6 yards in his 73 punts last season. Candidates to replace Lloyd include redshirt junior Zack Burgy-VanHoose, redshirt sophomore Lucas Williams, freshman Sam Hayworth and recent addition Deighton. Burgy-VanHoose attempted two kickoffs and one field goal last season. Williams and Hayworth have yet to kick in a college game. Hayworth can punt as well. Deighton has the most collegiate 'kicking' experience of the group, but his kicking came on the soccer field. The senior played soccer the last four seasons at Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio. The midfielder helped the Yellow Jackets to their first-ever NCAA Division III national tournament appearance. As a senior he led the team with six goals.... Senior Taylor Speaks will handle long snapping for the fourth straight season and Wrzuszczak will be the holder for kicks." - Colonels

March 14, 2015 - kicker Logan Birchfield commits
"The Elizabethton senior place-kicker will make it official Wednesday with the Richmond school. The ceremony will be held at 3:30 p.m. at the high school. As a preferred walk-on, the 6-foot-1, 180-pound Birchfield is assured a spot on the team but not given a scholarship. 'They have another kicker coming in, too, but he’s more of a punter,' said Birchfield. 'They have a senior kicker coming back, but if I do well I could earn a scholarship my sophomore year'." - Johnson City Press

February 4, 2015 - kicker Sam Hayworth signs
"The Eastern Kentucky signee hit 10 of 11 field goals and 20 of 21 extra points. He also averaged 38.1 yards on 44 punts.... He took a visit this past weekend and committed on the final day. He said he loved the campus and the opportunity." - News-Journal

October 22, 2014 - kicker Andrew Lloyd
Lloyd, the only EKU football player to make the pre-season All-Ohio Valley Conference team, is 9 of 10 on field goal attempts with his one miss a 52-yard try — which would have been a career-best. He is tied for 13th in the FCS in field-goal accuracy and has converted all 28 of his extra-point kicks. Lloyd helped the 18th-ranked Colonels (6-1, 3-1) win their first six games. They will take on visiting Southeast Missouri on Saturday. 'I'd like to be 100 percent,' Lloyd said. 'I missed that one against Austin Peay but so far I like where (our season) is going'." - Courier-Journal

October 11, 2014 - Andrew Lloyd kicks game winner in OT over Eastern Illinois
"Colonels rallied from a 21-point second-half deficit to edge Eastern Illinois 36-33 in overtime.... Andrew Lloyd won it with a 29-yard field goal, although he had to wait through back-to-back Eastern Illinois timeouts before making the kick. 'It was like more of a chip shot. They were trying to ice me,' Lloyd said. 'I went back to the net, got another kick in. They tried to ice me again. I went back to the net. I just treated it like practice. Stay calm, cool, collected and hit it through the uprights.' Lloyd got his opportunity after Eastern Illinois fumbled away its overtime possession." - Lexington Herald-Leader

May 5, 2014 - straight-on kickers on campus and on film
"NFL Films will be on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University this summer exploring the straight-on kicker in conjunction with the Ray Guy Prokicker.com Camp and Dean Hood Football Camp on June 6-7 at Roy Kidd Stadium. Newly selected Pro Football Hall of Famer Ray Guy – the first pure punter to ever be named – will also be at the camp.... The camp in June is for soccer style kickers, punters, and long snappers and includes instruction for the straight-on kicking approach. Demonstrations and one-on-one coaching of all skills will be provided, with NFL Films focusing on the straight-on kicking technique. High school straight-on kickers will be chronicled throughout the camp and selected players may be followed during their high school season to see their involvement in the game as well as their progress on the field.... NFL Films will have a crew filming and interviewing at the camp while looking at how kicking has evolved from the straight-on approach to the now more dominant soccer style. They will be examining the trends in the kicking game and what's ahead for the future." - EKU Sports

April 30, 2014 - Aussie 2
The EKU football coaching staff had no idea what to expect when they offered a scholarship to a teenage kicker from Australia. It was a shot in the dark, really. And it turned out to be a brilliant move. Jordan Berry was a special teams standout for the Colonels the past four years. He earned all-conference honors three times (first team in 2011, second team in 2010 and 2013) and turned heads not only with his with booming punts but also with his talent for trickery. Berry’s success gave EKU coach Dean Hood the confidence to take a chance on another player from Australia. This time, the Colonels signed Keith Wrzuszczak, a native of Geelong, Victoria. The 5-foot-10, 193 pound freshman arrived at EKU earlier this year and went through spring practice with the team. 'We call him Aussie 2,' Hood said. 'He’s doing really good for the first time being back there in punt formation. He’s holding for us. He’s working hard and doing a good job for us'.”- Richmond Register
