"URI returns not only a veteran kicker in senior Dylan Smith, but they’ve also added freshman Justin Rohrwasser into the fold. And the starter remains to be seen. Smith did connect on two of his three field goal attempts (including a 44-yarder) last year, but he also missed two of his 13 extra point attempts (85 percent). Yes, #CollegeKickers, but PATs should be much more automatic. Or, at least in the 90+ percent range. Will that open the door for Rohrwasser? The Punters: Much like the kicking situation, Rhody has both a senior (Connor McHugh) and a freshman (Leo Vagias) in the punting game. And this could be an interesting competition as well. McHugh was Rhode Island’s primary punter last year, but he averaged just 36.0 yards per punt on 55 kicks. McHugh also saw time as the placekicker, missing his only two field goal attempts while finishing a perfect 5-5 on PATs. Vagias is a highly regarded leg who can also spell a placekicker if needed." - Rhody Rampage

August 10, 2015 - summer specialists
"Westerly High graduate Anthony Garro went to a two-week camp on Saturday — not Camp Watchaug or Yawgoog for summer recreation, but to the URI football training camp to try to make the Division I team.... He is listed as a punter on the team’s 2015 spring football roster. He now has to prove himself during the camp’s two weeks to earn a spot on the fall roster — the only one that counts.... There are four other kicking specialists on the URI spring roster. Redshirt senior Dylan Smith was the team’s field-goal and extra-point kicker. Senior Connor McHugh was the kickoff specialist and punter last year, averaging 36.0 yards per punt. Incoming freshman Justin Rohrwasser was a first-team All-Stater and Small School Kicker of the Year in New York state and was near-perfect in field goals and extra points. Fellow recruit Leo Vagias was voted New Jersey’s best kicker, excelling both as a place kicker and a punter, averaging 41.9 yards per punt." - Westerly Sun

Joining the team in the fall are kicker Justin Rohrwasser (Catholic Central) and kicker/punter Leo Vagias (Ramsey, N.J.)." - Rams

February 4, 2015 - kickers Justin Rohrwasser & Leo Vagias sign

He also was recruited Boise State and Albany. An all-around athlete, Rohrwasser also played soccer and ran track.
Leo Vagias - Ramsey, N.J., Voted New Jersey's best kicker, Leo Vagias was an All-State, All-League and All-County selection as a senior for football power Don Bosco. He was ranked among the nation's top 50 kickers, going 8-for-11 on field goal attempts, with a long of 47 yards last fall. "When it comes to the kicking game, Rhode Island returns most of the key players from a year ago. Juniors Dylan Smith (River Edge, N.J.), Anthony DiPaula (Manalapan, N.J.) and Connor McHugh (Lowell, Mass.) are all back, as is senior long snapper Clay Crume (League City, Texas)....  Smith (above) led Rhode Island in scoring last season with 39 points, finishing the season 8-for-10 on field goal attempts and 15-for-17 on extra points. He tied a school record with four field goals in a 12-10 win over Richmond last Oct. 19, earning CAA Football Special Teams Player of the Week honors in the process. The performance earned Smith national awards from College Sporting News, The Sports Network, College Football Performance Awards and With a career field goal percentage of .765 (13-for-17), Smith is the most accurate kicker in Rhode Island history. DiPaula (right) got stronger as the season went along in 2013, finishing the year with an average of 38.8 yards per punt. His average was the 10th best net punting average in program history. DiPaula had eight punts of 50 yards or longer and placed 22 punts inside the opposing 20-yard line. He also handled kickoff duties for the Rams. McHugh provided depth at both kicking spots in 2013. He appeared in four games, opening the season at the team's punter.... In addition to his snapping, Crume has been a key part of the punt coverage units.
