August 10, 2015 - summer specialists
Competition remains heated at the other specialist slots — kicker, punter and deep snapper. The Golden Eagles have added junior college transfer Cody Block to battle incumbent deep snapper Lance Schuffert. In addition, Wozniak said Tyler Sarrazin, Matthew Moseley and Cody Gottberg are working for the starting punter job. 'We’ve got two or three punters we feel like can go into a game,' he said. 'Kicking-wise, we’ve got a really good battle going on there that’s neck-and-neck.' Junior Stephen Brauchle, a Division I transfer from Louisiana-Lafayette who sat out last season, is vying for the kicking duties with redshirt freshman Parker Shaunfield. 'Whoever goes out there is going to do just fine,' Wozniak said. 'Stephen might have a little bit bigger leg, but Parker’s done a good job getting some height and popping it up a little bit. Right now, they’re both nice kickers doing a really good job'." - Hattiesburg American

April 9, 2015 - second spring scrimmage kicking
"The special teams unit saw three different kickers used in the scrimmage. Parker Shaunfield kicked a team-long 40-yard field goal, while Nick Vogel added a 37-yard FG. Stephen Brauchle kicked off and made a TD-saving tackle. In addition, Brauchle also made a PAT." - CUSA

"2014 (Freshman, UAB): Did not compete during the season, taking a redshirt ... Eligible to play immediately due to Blazers disbanding its football program. "Southern Miss received a verbal commitment from a special teams player for the second straight day on Sunday. UAB transfer Nick Vogel, a freshman kicker, committed to the Golden Eagles on Saturday. On Sunday, Pearl River Community College long-snapper Bobby Daggett gave his verbal commitment to USM. He will be a walk-on when he arrives. The Pascagoula product will likely redshirt the 2015 season at USM with starting long-snapper Lance Schuffert returning for his senior campaign." - Sun Herald

November 5, 2014 - punter Tyler Sarrazin
"Sarrazin has been on the field a lot since his enrollment at USM. When Matthew Moseley was hurt last season, Sarrazin took over the Southern Miss punting duties. And never gave them up. In 2013, Sarrazin finished with 44 punts for a 39.4-yard average. This year, he has 50 punts for a 39.6 average. Twelve of his punts have been within the opposition's 20-yard line. He has eight punts of 50 or more yards with a long of 57. '"He has all the talent in the world,' USM head coach Todd Monken said. 'He really does. He has a strong leg. It is just consistency. He has the capability of being special as a punter.' There have been a few shanks, and Sarrazin takes the blame. 'Basically, it's on me, the way I drop it,' he said. 'Sometimes the nose falls or it will rise and it will affect the way the ball leaves my foot. I've got to work on being more consistent on that and hopefully help my team out in the long run.' Last week against UTEP, Sarrazin punted seven times for a 44.6 average. 'I thought he did a good job (at UTEP),' Monken said. 'Our guys did a good job of covering. I think our net for the game was 41 or 42, which if you have that every week, you are going to be in the top five or 10 in the country. That was a positive for us. He is only going to get better as he gets experienced'." - Sun Herald

June 10, 2014 - kicker Parker Shaunfield
"Late signee, kicker Parker Shaunfield (Aledo, Texas), will report for two-a-days, which are set to begin July 31." - Clarion Ledger

May 26, 2014 - punter Cody Gottberg
"Per munzly: Punter Cody Gottberg (North Forsyth, Ga.) will join the Southern Miss football team" Welcome aboard! @cogott7" - USMVoice

April 17, 2014 - spring kicking
"Things could look different for the field goal kicking unit next season as the Eagles look to iron out some issues with the holder and line. 'We have repped a few different guys in the spring,' Corey Acosta said. 'With me, its been Matt Moseley on close field goes and Cole Weeks has taken farther field goals. Cole has really stepped it up and has gotten a lot more comfortable. The dark horse is Tyler Sarrazin who is really natural at it. It will be interesting to see how that plays out in the summer and into fall camp. The emphasis has been with field goals and height. Our goal is whether it is blocked perfectly or there is a leak through, our goal is to have that thing up high enough where it won't be touched. That's something I've worked on a lot this spring.' The Eagles will focus on kickoff coverage more as the two-a-days start in August. 'Kickoffs we haven't gotten after it as much as a unit, but individually we have been working on it,' Acosta said. 'Kickoffs are something that comes closer to the summer as something that you get more prepared to as fall camp comes around'." - Golden Eagle Pride

April 14, 2014 - kicker Corey Acosta
"Coming off a 2013 campaign that saw him make 11 out of 20 field goals, Acosta leans on mental toughness to get through difficult situations. 'I guess when you get in those situations, you have one of two options,' the Memphis native said. 'Either give up and fold, or you just push through. It’s all relatable from football to the classroom to what you want out of life. Sometimes you get an F, but that doesn’t mean you’re going to drop the class'.... Following Acosta’s string of six missed field goal tries last season, he closed out the year making six of his final eight attempts, including the final two against Alabama-Birmingham. He’s carried that momentum over to spring camp. 'I’ve been kicking well,' he said. 'I’m happy with where I’m at and with how I’ve been doing'.” - Clarion Ledger
