October 12, 2015 - kicker Austin Lopez earns weekly MW honors
"For his best game of the season and contributing to San Jose State University’s 33-27 overtime football win at UNLV on October 10, placekicker Austin Lopez was named the Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Week. The senior from Euless, Texas (Trinity HS) converted his three point-after-touchdown kicks and field goals of 30 and 34 yards as the Spartans (3-3, 2-1 Mountain West) overcame deficits of 10-0 in the first half and 24-20 in the fourth quarter for the eventual victory. As important as his point scoring, five of his six kickoffs in the game were taken by UNLV as touchbacks. The week before at Auburn, San Jose State found itself in disadvantageous circumstances due to short kickoffs and long kickoff returns. At UNLV, the Rebels average starting field position for their offense following a Lopez kickoff was its 26-yard line, more than a 20-yard improvement over what happened at Auburn. The Mountain West weekly award for Lopez is his second." - Spartans

November 17, 2014 - kicking competition
"San Jose State has a competition at place-kicker this week after former freshman All-American Austin Lopez's struggles continued in the Spartans' loss to Hawaii. Lopez, a junior, missed field goals from 41 and 37 yards -- the second of which was partially blocked -- and is now just 12 of 23 on the season. Michael Carrizosa replaced him in the second half of the 13-0 loss, and his 24-yard attempt was also blocked. 'Field goals have got to be automatic,' San Jose State coach Ron Caragher said. 'We've got to be able to make those, and right now we're at 50 percent in very makeable range. That's one of our frustrations'.... And so Lopez and Carrizosa, the team's freshman punter, will battle to see who will handle kicking duties Friday at Utah State. 'The best thing to do when you're not getting your standard that you have to have is open up competition,' Caragher said. 'Let the cream rise to the top. Maybe that will be Austin. Maybe it'll be Mike. But we'll see'." - San Jose Mercury News

September 15, 2014 - punter Michael Carrizosa
"True freshman punter Michael Carrizosa is averaging only 33.5 yards over six punts, not including the snap he dropped against Auburn that was recovered by SJSU for a turnover on downs to set up a short touchdown drive. Caragher said he remains confident in the Palma High product. 'I've seen Michael really have an outstanding fall camp,' Caragher said. 'I'm encouraged with where he's at. I believe in him and I believe he can succeed in doing the job well'." - Monterey Herald

June 17, 2014 - summer specialists
"Redshirt freshman Zach Steinberg will replace punter Harrison Wald, the feistiest specialist in college football. At kicker, Austin Lopez is a just behind Colorado State's Jared Roberts as the best in the MWC." - USA Today

May 13, 2014 - spring specialists
"Austin Lopez gives SJSU stability at kicker. He was a perfect 17 for 17 as a freshman in 2012 and nailed 22 of 27 last year, including a pair from 50-plus yards. He’s 13 of 15 in his career on kicks from 40-plus yards. The punter position is unsettled with a redshirt freshman, true freshman and JC transfer trying to earn the job." -  Saturday Edge
