"Greece coach Claudio Ranieri on Friday overlooked veteran strikers Kostas Mitroglou and Giorgos Samaras from his 23-man squad for a UEFA EURO 2016 qualifier against the Faroe Islands at home on 14 November. Olympiacos forward Mitroglou and Samaras of West Bromwich Albion failed to impress in Greece's three previous European qualifiers where they suffered two losses and a draw. Ranieri called up for the first time AEK Athens defender Michalis Bakakis, 23, and 29-year-old Levante UD defender Nikos Karabelas for his side which are also scheduled to play a friendly against Serbia on November 18." - FIFA

"Greece coach Claudio Ranieri has dropped veteran striker Fanis Gekas from his attacking lineup, and called up rookie Nikos Karelis for the European Championship qualifiers against Finland and Northern Ireland.... Ranieri also stuck with in-form PAOK striker Stefanos Athanasiadis who failed to make Greece's World Cup squad earlier this year. "Greece captain Giorgos Karagounis announced his retirement from an international football career spanning 139 caps over 15 years following his team’s World Cup round of 16 exit to Costa Rica on penalties on Sunday. 'This was my last game for Greece,' the 37-year-old told reporters. 'We wanted to stay on another week or even longer but you can’t change it now.' The midfielder, who had his biggest moment when he helped Greece surprisingly win the European Championship in 2004, said he would move aside for younger players.... The hard-working Karagounis, who scored 10 goals for Greece, made his first appearance in 1999 against El Salvador and went on to play in three European Championships as well as two World Cups." - Gulf News

"Georgios Samaras's dramatic injury-time penalty took Greece into the World Cup last 16 for the first time Tuesday as they grabbed a 2-1 win which sent Ivory Coast crashing out.
