November 8, 2014 - Satchel Ziffer kicks game winner over FIU
"After some pointed remarks from the coaching staff, the Monarchs' defense stiffened in the fourth quarter against Florida International and put kicker Satchel Ziffer in position to cleanly boot the game winner on the final play of a dramatic 38-35 affair Saturday at S.B. Ballard Stadium. 'How 'bout Satchel Ziffer,' ODU head coach Bobby Wilder said in the happy aftermath of the Monarchs' first win since Sept. 20. 'I say that jokingly, but that's probably the story of the season, having a lot of new faces stepping up and doing special things. I'm really happy for him.' Ziffer's 28-yard field goal at the gun was made possible by Fellonte Misher's diving interception of a tipped pass in the final seconds, when it appeared the game was headed to overtime.... A Heinicke slide centered the ball in the middle of the field, and after two FIU timeouts, Ziffer calmly split the uprights. 'Going from third-string kicker to first string and kicking the game-winning field goal, there's nothing like that,' Ziffer said. 'It seemed like it was meant to be.' Indeed, Ziffer, a redshirt sophomore from Lancaster, Pa., started the season as the No. 3 kicker. He moved up to No. 2 when Ricky Segers' knee injury shelved him for the season. Freshman Jarrett Cervi struggled a bit in warmups, Wilder said, and when he pushed a 34-yard field goal attempt wide right in the first quarter, the coach called on Ziffer. He kicked all five ODU extra points after touchdowns and kicked off. Beyond that, everybody in the building saw him attempt a field goal in a game for the first time.... Then came the Heinicke-to-Pascal connection, followed by Ziffer's game winner. The kicker was looking in the stands when Misher intercepted the ball. 'Then all of a sudden,' Ziffer said, 'I hear something, I'm like, 'Oh my God, this is going to come down to me.' The whole game, we were all joking, Satchel, it's your first time kicking, it's going to come down to you, and I was like, 'Oh no, it's not,' and I ended up doing it'." - Daily Press

September 20, 2014 - Ricky Segers kicks game winner over Rice
"After Rice tied the score with 1:05 left, Segers drilled a 25-yard field goal as time expired to lift the Monarchs to a 45-42 upset of the Owls, the defending Conference USA champions. Segers also made six extra points and booted four kickoffs out of the end zone. 'I've waited my whole life for a moment like this,' said Segers, who was mobbed by teammates at game's end. When you watch your teammates go out there for 59 minutes and do their job, it's really hard to go out there and not do yours. 'Today, I did my job'.... Segers showed enormous potential in spring practice, then missed all three field goals he attempted in the spring game. He had a strong preseason camp, but kicked poorly in ODU's first two games. In the opener against Hampton, Segers slipped on an extra point attempt, missing the kick and injuring his knee. He returned to play the next week against N.C. State but missed a short field goal.... ODU identified Segers as Jarod Brown's heir apparent two seasons ago. He was forced to play at Georgia State as a freshman when Brown went down with an injury, which burned a year of eligibility. Wilder left him off the travel squad last season to ensure ODU would redshirt him. 'There's a learning curve involved here,' Segers said. 'It's kick by kick. But I think I've found the right mindset. I have tunnel vision. I'm only moving forward. That kick tonight, that's as high pressure as it's going to get'." - The Virginian-Pilot

April 10, 2014 - kicker Ricky Segers
"Jarrod Brown was quite a weapon for ODU over the years, replacing him will not be easy.  Ricky Segers has impressed this Spring with a range of over 50 yards.  In a year that ODU goes from 5 FBS games to 11, he will be called upon to win games more than once this season." - ODU Bleed Blue

March 1, 2014 - spring specialists
"ODU loses four-year starter and its all-time points leader in Jarod Brown.  Brown set the FCS record for consecutive extra points made in a season in 2012 and kicked the longest field goal, a 54-yarder, in Heinz Field history. Sophomore Ricky Segers redshirted in 2013 while Kyle Lawrence kicked a pair of extra points last season in the win over Rhode Island. Senior Rick Lovato returns for his fourth season as the starting long snapper, Lovato has snapped flawlessly on every kick and punt the last three seasons. Sophomore Joe Pulisic returns for his sophomore season after punting six times last year with a long of 48.  Pulisic is also the holder on all extra points and field goals." - Monarchs
