September 30, 2014 - punter James Farrimond now kicks
"Farrimond added to his punting duties last week when the Owls named him their new placekicker. He responded with 27- and 33-yard field goals - the first of his career - and made five extra points in Rice's 41-23 win at Southern Mississippi. 'He has really developed himself through hard work,' coach David Bailiff said. Bailiff said the Owls were in search of consistency. James Hairston, a transfer from LSU, was 2-of-6 on field goals through the first three games, leading the Owls to open up the competition for the job in practice. Hairston will continue to be used on kickoffs and long field-goal attempts. '(Farrimond) was so consistent we just felt we had to go with him,' Bailiff said....  Through four games, Farrimond is averaging 43.9 yards on punts, up from 42.1 last season. He's had five punts of at least 50 yards and four downed inside the opponent's 20-yard line. He said one of his major focuses has been improving his hang time to the 4.75-4.8-second range after averaging 4.4-4.5 last season. Farrimond said that as long as he's handling field goals, he plans to continue using some of the tips and tricks of the trade offered by Chris Boswell." - Houston Chronicle

July 21, 2014 - kicker James Hairston transfers
"Following three solid seasons as LSU's kickoff specialist, James Hairston joins the Rice University football squad for his final year of eligibility. The Dallas native averaged 63.3 yards per kickoff for the Tigers from 2011-13, including 88 touchbacks on 235 kickoffs. In 2013, he posted a career-best 45 touchbacks and converted all four extra point attempts. In 2012, Hairston helped LSU to fourth in its conference in kickoff coverage with an average of 61.3 yards per kickoff. He kicked 27 touchbacks while handling all 79 of LSU's kickoffs on the year. As a freshman in 2011, he saw action in 11 games with 16 touchbacks on 70 kickoffs. That season he posted a career-best 65.7 yards per kickoff and was named to the SEC Coaches' All-Freshman team." - Owls

July 3, 2014 - summer specialists
"Rice loses a good one in kicker Chris Boswell, though he struggled at times with consistency as a senior. His job will be filled by one of Anthony Price or Taylor Knopf, two redshirt freshmen. Junior James Farrimond will return at punter and likely handle kickoff duties, hopefully matching – or nearing – the impact Boswell had on the Owls' field position." - USA Today

April 11, 2014 - spring game
Extra points: one by Anthony Price, one by Parker Hanusa, two by Taylor Knopf. James Farrimond averaged 48.4 yards on five punts, placing two inside the 20 yard line. - Owls

April 3, 2014 - spring specialists
