Fred Mitchell Award 2014 Watch List, part 2

A blue-ribbon Selection Committee evaluates place-kickers that are nominated by their schools for the annual Fred Mitchell Outstanding Place-Kicker Award. Members of the Pro and/or College Football Hall of Fame on the Selection Committee include Tom Beck, Kevin Butler, Paul Hornung, Marv Levy, Steve McMichael, Don Pierson and Gale Sayers. Former football players and others that are active in their communities are also on the Selection Committee including Carl Allegretti, Sergio Castillo, Sean Gothier, Teddy Greenstein, Michael Husted, Dan Jiggetts, Rick Kolaczewski, Connie Kowal, Greg Loberg, Tom Lynch, Carol Monroe, Jeff Michalczyk, Mark Murphy, Patrick Murray, Rob Perry, Michael Ritchey, Jeff Schebler, Caroline Schrenker, Jay Sebben, Bob Thomas, Wolfe Tone, Todd Wilkins, Gary Zauner and Rob Zvonar. There are 12 former college or NFL place-kickers on the Selection Committee, including Schebler (the inaugural Fred Mitchell Award recipient in 2009 and the highest-scoring place-kicker in NCAA history at any level), Lynch (two-time recipient of the Award and the kicker on the 2011 NAIA National Champion Saint Xavier University Cougars), Murray (whose 25 FG’s in 2012 were just one shy of the all-time FCS record set by Nevada’s Tony Zendejas) and Castillo (the first Division II kicker to win the Award and who made 62 of 79 career field goals and 251 of 255 extra points).

STEVE GRZYWACZ Stonehill College (Massachusetts) – Division II 
Junior from Manchester, NH….2nd on the team in 2013 scoring with 61 points from 8 of 12 FG’s and 37 of 41 PAT’s….2014 Beyond Sports Network Preseason All-Northeast-10… enters junior year ranked 2nd in program history for career FG’s made (one shy of record) and FG attempts; 3rd for PAT kicks made… 2013 All-Northeast-10 Second Team… set program single-season records for PAT’s made and attempted, while his point total is the 8th highest single-season total in program history and his FG’s made is tied for 2nd all-time, behind his own school record of 11 in 2012... ranked 12th in the NE-10 for scoring, 3rd for FG’s made and 4th for PAT’s made and kicker scoring… volunteers for a mentoring program with the Brockton High School chapter of Let's Get Ready, a program that offers counseling and free SAT prep to students from low income families… served as a math coach which involved working with students on math skills and tips on how to take the math portion of the SAT exam… worked with sessions called "college choice” to advise students on various aspects of college prep, exploring and researching various schools, reviewing the college application process as well as helping students to register for the SAT exam… volunteers for the Special Olympics program at Stonehill and the Easton Elementary School Recess day program 

ALEX HALLWACHS Washington University (Missouri) – Division III 
Junior from Chagrin Falls, OH….led the team in 2013 scoring with 45 points from 8 of 14 FG’s and 21 of 22 PAT’s….First Team All-UAA….led the UAA in kicking points (45), FG’s (8) and PAT % (96%)…made season-long 45-yard FG with 8 seconds left in 9-7 win at Carnegie Mellon on November 2….UAA Special Teams Player of the Week three times during the season…averaged 55 yards on 37 kickoffs….volunteered for eight weeks to help inner city youth develop leadership, self-motivation and teamwork skills through soccer….Koaches for Kids volunteer 

CONNOR HASKINS University of North Carolina at Pembroke – Division II 
Junior from Lumberton, NC….led the Braves in 2013 scoring with 91 points from 14 of 19 FG’s and 49 of 50 PAT’s….nominated for 2013 Fred Mitchell Award….set school records for both FG’s (14) and PAT’s made (49) last season….named Beyond Sports Network (BSN) Special Teams Player of the Week after connecting on all three FG attempts (19, 22, 44) and both PAT attempts in a season-opening 25-21 upset of then-No. 5 Winston-Salem State….matched career long with 48-yard FG against Catawba….set school record with 16 points (3/3 FG, 7/7 PAT) against Tusculum….broke school record by connecting on all nine PAT attempts against Virginia-Lynchburg….made 57 consecutive PAT attempts (school record)….ranks 4th all-time in school history with 155 points….made two or more made FG’s in five games this year….averaged 61 yards on 75 kickoffs…Lumberton High School football camp volunteer….attended mission trip to Mexico with First Presbyterian Church in Lumberton 

RANDY HILL St. Norbert College (Wisconsin) – Division III 
Senior from Green Bay, WI….led the team in 2013 scoring with 52 points from 8 of 14 FG’s and 28 of 31 PAT’s….First Team All-Midwest Conference…received the team’s Special Teams Unsung Hero Award….team’s Special Teams Player of the Week three times and Special Teams Player of the Year…averaged 62 yards on 50 kickoffs…St. Norbert College Free Youth Camp volunteer….coordinated with some football teammates for a Bingo Night at a local assisted living facility. 

JOSEPH HOUSTON Hinds Community College (Mississippi) – NJCAA 
Sophomore from Pelahatchie, MS….2nd on the team in 2013 scoring with 67 points from 9 of 11 FG’s and 40 of 44 PAT’s….All-Region XXIII team….All-State First Team Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges….made 41-yard FG into the wind against Navarro (Texas) College in the Brazos Valley Bowl on December 7….volunteers at Timber Creek Christian camp….Haiti mission trip to work in an orphanage….collects canned goods for the needy during holidays 

TANNER HUBBARD Dakota State University (South Dakota) – NAIA 
Sophomore from Aurora, CO….3rd on the team in 2013 scoring with 30 points from 2 of 2 FG’s and 24 of 28 PAT’s….nominated for 2013 Fred Mitchell Award….scored 7 points in 31-28 win over Jamestown on October 12….volunteers at the ECCO in Madison to help disabled people for two hours weekly….ROTC cleanup volunteer in Brookings 

KRESIMIR IVKOVIC John Carroll University (Ohio) – Division III 
Senior from Euclid, Ohio … led the Blue Streaks in 2013 scoring with 117 points from 20 of 24 FG’s and 57 of 57 PAT’s … 2013 Fred Mitchell Award Finalist…2013 AP Little All-American….set numerous single season school records this year including most FG’s made, most FG’s attempts, most PAT’s made and most PAT attempts … tied the 23-year old Ohio Athletic Conference record with 20 FG’s in a season….helped John Carroll to enter the NCAA Division III Championship playoff field for the first time since 2002 … battled snow on November 23 to make all 3 FG’s and 1 PAT in a 25-16 playoff loss….named to the Team of the Week Presented by Scoutware for his performance against Baldwin Wallace where he made both of his FG attempts in John Carroll’s 27-7 win over the then-No. 23 Yellow Jackets including a career-long 45-yard FG … helped stake JCU to a 17-0 halftime lead and forced touchbacks on three of his five kickoffs … two-time Ohio Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week earning honors after wins against Baldwin Wallace and Ohio Northern …scored 17 points against the Polar Bears … helped team to just second 9-0 start in school history and fourth NCAA Championship appearance … helped the Blue Streaks to be ranked as high as No. 9 in the Top 25 and the AFCA Top 25 … averaged 62 yards on 86 kickoffs….point person behind Kick-It campaign to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer on JCU’s campus … football community raised $1,100 towards Kick-It against Heidelberg on November 9, well beyond Ivkovic’s goal … Kick-It is a program designed to raise money for pediatric, adolescent and young adult cancer research ….partnering with Kick-It again in 2014 … volunteers for Cultivating the Community, an initiative where the football team interacts with surrounding communities to drive positive growth … helped clean, paint and perform yard work at Saint Thomas Aquinas Elementary through Volunteers for Cultivating the Community … tutors elementary students in reading and mathematics once a week through Champs Roxboro, a grant-funded enriched program designed to serve the needs of at-risk youth in the Cleveland Heights-University Heights School District … coaches youth soccer team as part of Croatian Community of Cleveland … volunteered to help teach kicking and punting at the John Carroll University and Penn Hills High School camps … Worked Pre Cana at St. Basil 

ADAM KELLER North Dakota State University – FCS 
Senior from Lewisberry, PA….led the Bison in 2013 scoring with 103 points from 9 of 12 FG’s and 76 of 78 PAT’s….nominated for 2013 Fred Mitchell Award….named to 2014 College Football Performance Awards Watch List….scored 6 points in 24-23 win over then #4 Northern Iowa on October 5….scored 6 points in 24-21 win at Kansas State in season-opener….set school records in 2013 and 2012 for PAT’s made and attempted….volunteer coach for Tri-City seventh grade soccer team…Rosewood Nursing Home volunteer…middle school tutor to special needs students….Special Olympics volunteer….Blue Key Honor Society Member. 

THOMAS KINNEY Southern Illinois University – FCS 
Senior from McHenry, IL….led the Salukis in 2013 scoring with 94 points from 18 of 24 FG’s and 40 of 41 PAT’s….…. named to 2014 College Football Performance Awards Watch List ….Preseason First Team All-American by The Sports Network….Second Team All-Conference and MVFC All-Newcomer Team….18 FG’s in 2013 ranks 2nd in school history….52-yard FG against Western Illinois tied for 2nd longest in FCS in 2013…named 2014 preseason First Team All-America kicker by The Sports Network and Beyond Sports Network….averaged 60 yards on 30 kickoffs….volunteered with the football team in the annual Souper Bowl of Caring fundraisers in 2013 and 2014 to combat hunger and assist Good Samaritan Ministries and the Murphysboro Food Pantry….Special Olympics volunteer with the football team 

AVERY LLEWELLYN Colorado School of Mines – Division II 
Junior from Durango, CO….led the team in 2013 scoring with 86 points from 14 of 19 FG’s and 44 of 47 PAT’s….2014 Beyond Sports Network Second Team Preseason All-American and All-RMAC…2013 Don Hansen All-Super Region….NFFCC All-Colorado Special Teams Player of the Year and All-Colorado….RMAC Special Teams Player of the Year…led RMAC with 14 regular season FG’s….3 of 3 in FG’s in wins over Fort Lewis, New Mexico Highlands and Chadron State…averaged 61 yards on 75 kickoffs….Project Merry Christmas volunteer in Durango where he worked with Durango Fire Department to deliver gifts to local families 

CARLOS MACIAS Navarro College (Texas) – NJCAA 
Sophomore from Dangerfield, TX….2nd on the team in 2013 scoring with 99 points from 11 of 11 FG’s and 66 of 67 PAT’s….set school record for most kicking points in a season (99), most FG’s in a game (4) and most PAT’s in a season (66)….Habitat for Humanity volunteer in Corsicana….food drive volunteer on campus 

MILES MACKENZIE Ohio Wesleyan University – Division III 
Senior from Denver, CO….2nd on the team in 2013 scoring with 59 points from 8 of 21 FG’s and 35 of 41 PAT’s….3rd in kick scoring in North Coast Athletic Conference…holds OWU game, season and career records for FG’s made….35 PAT’s was 2nd in school history….volunteer at Bishop Champion Games track and field meet for athletes with special needs…volunteered 4 hours/week at the Grace Clinic in Delaware during the spring….volunteered 20 hours/week at Denver hospital during the summer
