Fred Mitchell Award 2014 Watch List, part 1

The annual Fred Mitchell Outstanding Place-Kicker Award is provided to the nation’s top collegiate place-kicker among more than 750 FCS, Division II, III, NAIA and NJCAA football teams. The Award is named for Fred Mitchell, the record-setting place-kicker, Wittenberg University Athletic Hall of Famer, author, philanthropist and Chicago Tribune sports columnist. The recipient of the Fred Mitchell Award will be chosen based on excellence on the football field and in the community. The Award’s Watch List is released in late July, top performers are recognized monthly during the college football season, and the winner (who is not required to be on the Watch List) is announced in mid-December. The school of the Award winner receives scholarship funds and the Fred Mitchell Award trophy will be presented in February 2015 at the National Football Foundation Chicago Metro Chapter Awards Ceremony at Halas Hall. 

The breakdown of the 36 place-kickers on this years’ watch list is as follows: 
  • Collegiate Division – 7 FCS, 12 Division II, 12 Division III, 3 NAIA and 2 NJCAA 
  • State – the place-kickers play at schools located in 24 different states
  • Year – 16 Seniors, 11 Juniors, 9 Sophomores 
  • Fred Mitchell Award Finalists in 2013 that are on the 2014 Watch List - 13

NICK AUSSIEKER Illinois State University – FCS 
Senior from Wildwood, MO….2nd on the team in 2013 scoring with 62 points from 9 of 11 FG’s and 35 of 35 PAT’s…nominated for 2013 Fred Mitchell Award…. named to 2014 College Football Performance Awards Watch List …needs 66 points to set the school’s all-time scoring record….scored 13 points in 55-14 win over Indiana State on October 19….averaged 56 yards on 67 kickoffs….volunteers with the football team at Special Olympics….volunteered with coaches and teammates by digging trenches for the Humane Society of Central Illinois 

MATTHEW AVEN Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (California) – Division III 
Sophomore from Bellaire, TX….led the team in 2013 scoring with 44 points from 11 of 17 FG’s and 11 of 18 PAT’s…nominated for 2013 Fred Mitchell Award….tied Division III record with 62-yard FG on October 19 against Cal Lutheran….also made 50-yard FG against Cal Lutheran….named SCIAC Male Athlete of the Week and selected to the D3football.com Team of the Week following Cal Lutheran game….scored 13 points in 49-46 OT win over Whittier on October 26 including game-winning 33-yard FG….made game-winning 36-yard FG in OT to beat Lewis & Clark on September 14….made 53-yard FG against Rhodes on September 21….one FG miss and three PAT misses were blocked….two week mission trip in Honduras at Mission Lazerus….Impact Church Reading Program volunteer….Service Project with Amigos for Christ in Nicaragua….monthly volunteer at Loaves and Fishes soup kitchen for four years 

ALEX BALL Lamar University (Texas) – FCS 
Sophomore from Westlake, CA….4th on the team in 2013 scoring with 41 points from 7 of 7 FG’s and 20 of 20 PAT’s….took over kicking responsibilities midway through his freshman season…. named to 2014 College Football Performance Awards Watch List….scored career-high 16 points in win over Stephen F. Austin including 41-yard FG for the win as time expired and school record 4 FG’s in a game….Southland Conference Special Teams Player of the Week….made career-long 47-yard FG at Sam Houston State….made 42-yard FG against Central Arkansas….averaged 52 yards on 52 kickoffs….volunteered to play games and read books to kids at a local children’s home 

MICHAEL BARON Bentley University (Massachusetts) – Division II 
Junior from Medfield, MA….2nd on the team in 2013 scoring with 64 points from 9 of 13 FG’s and 37 of 38 PAT’s….2nd in Northeast-10 in FG %, PAT % and FG’s made….4 FG’s in October 5 game against Saint Anselm tied school and conference record….named NE-10 co-Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts in that game where he scored 14 points…averaged 53 yards on 36 kickoffs….Deutches Altenheim nursing home volunteer 

ALEX BOUMERHI Lock Haven University (Pennsylvania) – Division II 
Junior from Philipsburg, PA….led the team in 2013 scoring with 46 points from 9 of 15 FG’s and 19 of 23 PAT’s….48-yard FG was the 2nd longest in the PSAC last season….averaged 57 yards on 41 kickoffs….volunteers each spring at the Robbie Gould Foundation Golf Tournament and youth football camp hosted by Lock Haven native and Chicago Bears kicker Robbie Gould….Philipsburg Soccer Association volunteer coach in spring and summer….Philipsburg-Osceola High School soccer team volunteer coach….held free youth soccer clinic for 60 local players for the Philipsburg Soccer Association….volunteer coach for local high school football kickers and specialists….participates in football team community service projects 

ANDREW BREES University of Minnesota Duluth – Division II 
Junior from West Allis, WI….2nd on the Bulldogs in 2013 scoring with 81 points from 10 of 15 FG’s and 51 of 58 PAT’s….volunteered at Courage Center Duluth the past two winters, working with people with disabilities ... volunteers at annual Duluth Lions Club Pancake Day, the ALS Blizzard Tour and various UMD sports clinics 

JEREMIAH CARTER Trinity International University (Illinois) – NAIA 
Sophomore from Irving, CA….2nd on the team in 2013 scoring with 51 points from 9 of 13 FG’s and 24 of 28 PAT’s….nominated for 2013 Fred Mitchell Award….scored 8 points in 20-17 win over Olivet Nazarene on October 5….averaged 55 yards on 45 kickoffs….pitcher on TIU’s baseball team….Special Olympics volunteer….volunteers at Challenger Classic baseball for special needs children….church Children’s Ministry volunteer for past six years….Vacation Bible School volunteer for past five years….Feed the Homeless volunteer….Walk to Cure Duchenne Disease participant….Junior Olympics and Irvine Junior Games volunteer 

KYLE CAZZETTA Yale University (Connecticut) – FCS 
Senior from Slate Hill, NY….3rd on the team in 2013 scoring with 58 points on 11 of 15 FG’s and 25 of 30 PAT’s…. nominated for 2013 Fred Mitchell Award…. named to 2014 College Football Performance Awards Watch List ….All-Ivy League honorable mention…two-time Ivy League Special Teams Player of the Week….punt, pass and kick volunteer with New Haven youth football teams….Bulldog Youth Day volunteer at a baseball game….Mandi Schwartz bone marrow drive participant….Warrior Scholar Project volunteer that helps veterans return to college life…Relay for Life participant with fellow Yale students 

CLARENCE CLARK Baker University (Kansas) – NAIA 
ophomore from Phoenix, AZ …led the team in 2013 scoring with 160 points (94 kicking points from 17 of 26 FG’s and 43 of 46 PAT’s)….made FG’s from 59, 55 and 51 yards as a freshman last season…scored 11 TD’s as a wide receiver….coaches 125 youth football players in Chandler at the Monday Night Football Free Football and Cheer Clinic presented by Chandler American Youth Football and Cheer 

SAM COTE Wheaton College (Illinois) – Division III 
Senior from Wheaton, IL …led the team in 2013 scoring with 83 points from 12 of 16 FG’s and 47 of 50 PAT’s….2013 Fred Mitchell Award Finalist….earned CCIW Special Teams Player of the Week three times in 2013… made a 53-yard FG as time expired in the first half against Illinois Wesleyan, the longest in school history….averaged 56 yards on kickoffs…. led a service/missions trip to Ethiopia through the Wheaton Football Ministry Partnership….served with FCA as an intern for the past three years including leading a Summer Bible Study and leading a Speed Training Camp for six weeks….led the FCA/Chick-Fil-A Chicago Power Camp for 200+ inner City kids… led the FCA service trips for the past three years….campus representative for Compassion International….Chicago Hope Academy volunteer….volunteering with Willow Creek Association by working with their student leadership conference in Germany 

ANDREW FRANKS Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (New York) – Division III 
Senior from Carmel, CA….led the team in 2013 scoring with 53 points from 9 of 11 FG’s and 26 of 28 PAT’s….All-Liberty League First Team kicker….BSN National All-America First Team….team’s Special Teams Player of the Year…tied his own school record with a 50-yard FG….four tackles including three unassisted….Liberty League Special Teams Performer of the Week three times in 2013…D3football.com National Team of the Week once….ECAC North West Special Teams Player of the Week twice….averaged 63 yards on 46 kickoffs….Special Olympics volunteer for past two years….American Cancer Society Relay for Life participant 

JOHN GAY Harding University (Arkansas) – Division II 
Senior from Jonesboro, AR….led the team in 2013 scoring with 77 points from 6 of 7 FG’s and 59 of 64 PAT’s….nominated for 2013 Fred Mitchell Award….scored 12 points against Henderson State on October 26….Walk for the Cure cancer walk volunteer including selling food to raise funds….wrote thank you notes to Harding donors in the annual Say Thanks Day and Highlighter Run….washed windows and cars for the elderly with the football team
