Lamar Cardinals Kicker, Punter & Snapper News

November 22, 2014 - Juan Carranco kicks game winner over McNeese State
"Juan Carranco drilled a 23-yard field goal with the clock winding down to hold off No. 17 McNeese State, who rallied to tie the game in the fourth quarter, and gave the Lamar football team a 27-24 win Saturday afternoon at Cowboy Stadium in Southland Conference action.... Coach Ray Woodard called a timeout with four seconds remaining before McNeese called two timeouts to freeze the kicker, but Carranco split the uprights and turned around and celebrated as the clock hit zero. 'Juan missed two earlier, and I'm glad he made up for it at the end," said Woodard. I am very happy and very proud for him'." - Cardinals

August 28, 2014 - new long snapper
“For four years, I haven’t had to worry about our snapper or our punter,' said head coach Ray Woodard. 'Chris (Maikranz) never made a bad snap in four years and Kollin (Kahler) was arguably the best punter in school history. Because of how good Maikranz was, we felt it was necessary to go out and recruit two long snappers. It is a position you don’t think about until things go wrong. I’ve been around teams where the long snapper was a problem and that is not a situation I want to be around again which is why we brought in two very talented guys,' added Woodard. Corinth  native Brent Nicholson will be the top candidate to replace Maikranz. The 6-2, 240-pound product comes to Beaumont with an edge experience from the junior college ranks. Nicholson will be backed up by freshman Zack Roberts (6-2, 235) from Magnolia." - Port Arthur News

July 7, 2014 - kicker Alex Ball named to watch list
"Sophomore kicker Alex Ball has been named to the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) Preseason Watch List announced CFPA executive director Brad Smith. Ball took over the starting role at kicker midway through the 2013 season and never looked back. Taking over for one of the school's all-time leading scorers, Ball became an immediate weapon for Lamar. A perfect 20-of-20 on point after tries, Ball proved he had one of the stronger legs in the Southland despite his rookie status. The California native, drilled a 41-yard field goal as time was running out to secure the come-from-behind victory over rival Stephen F. Austin. The field goal not only iced LU's first win over the Lumberjacks since returning the sport to varsity status, but also was the exclamation point on a career night for Ball. He finished the game with a career-high 16 points, and was named Southland Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts. Ball finished the season a perfect 7-of-7 on field-goal attempts." - Cardinals

February 14, 2014 - departing specialists
Lamar also has some big shoes to fill on special teams. The Cardinals will be looking to replace All-American deep snapper Chris Maikranz, and first-team All-SLC punter Kollin Kahler. Both players held the starting positions since the program was brought back. Maikranz never recorded a bad snap during his four years, while Kahler graduates as the school's career leader in punt average." - Cardinals
