September 12, 2014 - kicker Diego Carstens
"Carstens is a native of Cancun, Mexico, which isn't exactly the known as a hotbed for gridiron talent. But Carstens, who caught the BHSU coaching staff’s attention this summer on a YouTube video where he kicked six straight field goals of 50 yards or better, also caught Petrino a bit off guard with his knowledge of the game. 'When I went into it, I felt like I was going to have to do a lot of explaining,' special teams coordinator Jared Petrino said as the Yellow Jackets prepare for South Dakota School of Mines on Saturday in the 129th Battle for the Homestake Trophy. 'But it got to the point where he was almost frustrated because he was saying, 'Coach, I know ... I know what that is'.... It wasn’t a game-winning kick last weekend — the Jackets lost to FCS Montana State 57-10 in their season opener — but Carstens got the thrill of kicking his first collegiate field goal, from 39 yards out. He also added an extra point..... Black Hills State isn’t Carsten’s first collegiate experience — he spent a semester at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla. He tried to walk on with the Cowboys, but didn’t make it. His desire to play football, though, had him looking around for other possibilities. He went home and practiced kicking for a year before getting the call to become a Yellow Jacket." - Rapid City Journal
