September 10, 2014 - Marco Pappa braces for win over Honduras
Guatemala reached the Central American Cup (CCA) final for the first time in almost two decades by recording a 2-0 Group A win over Honduras, while clinching a spot in the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup at BBVA Compass Stadium on Wednesday night. Marco Pappa recorded his second multi-goal game in the competition to pace the group winners, who last played for the regional championship match in 1995.... Pappa enjoyed a Man of the Match performance.  His first effort, a shot from distance in the 11th minute, sailed wide left, but that did not deter him. After teammate Carlos Ruiz sent a six-yard attempt over the crossbar two minutes later, Pappa drilled a 24-yard effort off the bar and past an outstretched goalkeeper Luis Lopez in the 37th minute.  The ball bounded into the net for the Seattle Sounders midfielder's third goal of the tournament after scoring twice in a 2-1 opening win over El Salvador. Pappa became the first Guatemalan to score more than one goal in the CCA since Juan Carlos Plata and Edwin Villatoro did so in 2005. He added an insurance goal in the 80th minute, finding some room by making a nifty move on Honduras captain Juan Pablo Montes just outside the right side the penalty area before unleashing a shot into the lower left far corner." - CONCACAF

September 7, 2014 - Ruiz & Avila score in win over Belize
"Carlos Ruiz and Marvin Avila scored as Guatemala (2-0-0, 6 points) moved one step closer to clinching a berth in the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup after beating Belize, 2-1, in a Central American Cup (CCA) Group A match at the Cotton Bowl on Sunday.... Ruiz opened the scoring with a brilliant strike in the 26th minute.  With his back to goal, Guatemala’s all-time leading scorer took a cross off his chest, turned and beat Belize goalkeeper Shane Orio with a bouncing volley from 10 yards.... Avila put Guatemala in front, 2-0, in the 51st minute, latching onto a deflected cross and putting a lunging eight-yard header on frame.  Orio dived to his right and made the save as the momentum carried the ball just over the goal line.... Deon McCaulay pulled back a goal for Belize in the 80th minute, when he took a short pass from Trevor Lennon and hammered a 24-yard shot from inside the right post for his fourth career CCA goal." - CONCACAF

September 3, 2014 - Marco Pappa braces for win over El Salvador
"Guatemala continued its dominance of El Salvador in the Central American Cup (CCA) by recording a 2-1 victory in a Group A match at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium on Wednesday night. Midfielder Marco Pappa scored a goal in each half in the last game of a tripleheader. Rafael Burgos tallied El Salvador's lone goal.... Pappa connected for his first goal on a rather unusual sequence in the 26th minute as two Salvadoran players had touches, before he beat goalkeeper Henry Hernandez.  The Seattle Sounders midfielder fired a shot from the right side that deflected off Alexander Mendoza to his left to teammate Ibsen Castro, who was in an awkward position and could not clear it out of the penalty area. The ball found its way back to Pappa and he drilled home a 10-yard shot to the near post for a 1-0 lead.... Pappa doubled the lead in the 64th minute, launching a 15-yard shot off a left-wing feed by Jose Contreras into the back of the net." - CONCACAF
