High School Long Kicks - Ohio

Our series exploring the longest field goals at the high school level in each state continues with Ohio.
  • 61 Carey Spear, Mayfield HS in 10-13 overtime loss vs. Solon Comets (11/14/2009): Division I Regional Semifinal at Byers Field, Parma, off Free Kick at end of 2nd half
"The end came in dramatic fashion in overtime, but the game would not have reached OT if not for Spear's heroics with time winding down in the first half. Wetzel called a fair catch on a Solon punt on the Mayfield 49-yard line with 10 seconds left in the second quarter. Spear came out and connected on a 61-yard field goal off a free kick to cut the Wildcats deficit to 7-3 with six seconds left on the clock. The kick tied former Mentor standout Kevin Harper's state record for longest field goal in Ohio high school history at 61 yards." - News-Herald
  • 61 Kevin Harper, Mentor HS Cardinals in 27-0 win over Solon High Comets, 9/7/2007
"Mentor's Kevin Harper, the kid with the wide smile and the powerful leg, established himself as both a hero and a star by sending the ball through the humid sky in Solon's Stewart Field Friday night. Harper, a 5-11 senior, kicked four field goals, including a state-record, plenty-to-spare 61-yard effort as the Cardinals defeated the previously unbeaten Comets, 27-0. 'I knew I was going to get a chance to kick a long one. I knew I had the wind at my back,' said Harper, who previous best was a 58-yarder in this season's opening-night loss to Youngstown power Cardinal Mooney. 'It was actually supposed to be lined up for a 60-yarder and I scooted back one yard further, because I didn't want to tie the record, I wanted to break the record'." - News-Herald
