Lithuania Men's National Soccer Team News

September 8, 2015 - Lukas Spalvis scores late winner over San Marino
"Lithuania 2-1 San Marino... San Marino scored in a competitive away fixture for the first time in over 14 years yet still suffered defeat thanks to Lukas Spalvis's stoppage-time decider in this UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying Group E contest. Matteo Vitaioli notched what was only the visitors' fifth-ever competitive away goal to bring the scores level following Fiodor Černych's early opener for the hosts. Pierangelo Manzaroli's men therefore looked set for just a second-ever competitive away draw until Spalvis touched in a late winner to keep Lithuania in with an outside chance of a play-off spot.... Despite being down to ten Lithuania roared back and Benedettini needed to be at his best to rebuff fierce attempts from both Novikovas and Linas Pilibaitis. The late sending-off of Nicola Chiaruzzi brought further pressure on the visiting goal and Spalvis snatched all three points for Igoris Pankratjevas's team when he knocked in an inswinging Novikovas cross to prevent San Marino from avoiding defeat for just the second time in a competitive away fixture." - UEFA

October 9, 2014 - Saulius Mikoliunas scores in win over Estonia
"Saulius Mikoliunas scored the only goal of the game as Lithuania defeated Estonia 1-0 in Euro 2016 qualifying Group E on Thursday night. Mikoliunas headed past goalkeeper Sergei Pareiko in the 76th minute from close range after linking up with Deividas Matulevicius.... Estonia keeper Pareiko kept busy at intervals during the match. However, he was unable to keep out the decisive effort of Mikoliunas midway through the second half when the substitute headed in from Matulevicius' ball from the left of the box." - ESPN

September 8, 2014 - Matulevičius & Novikovas score in win over San Marino
"Lithuania made a comfortable, if unspectacular, start to their UEFA EURO 2016 Group E campaign, first-half goals from Deivydas Matulevičius and Arvydas Novikovas enough to quell San Marino. The Lithuanians had to work hard for a 1-0 win here the last time they visited in 2004, but an early strike put them at their ease in Serravalle, and the only concern for coach Igoris Pankratjevas was that his side failed to add to their tally after the interval, San Marino having failed to trouble visiting goalkeeper Giedrius Arlauskis. A substantial victory looked to be in the offing as – not for the first time in recent games – Mindaugas Kalonas's ball into the box was tidied away by big CS Pandurii Târgu Jiu forward Matulevičius. Kalonas and Matulevičius both passed up chances to extend that fifth-minute advantage, and Aldo Simoncini saved from Novikovas's right-footed shot before the Germany-based winger made it 2-0, curling the ball in with his left foot after a tidy flick from Georgas Freidgeimas." - UEFA
