Peru Men's National Soccer Team News

July 3, 2015 - André Carrillo & Paolo Guerrero score in win over Paraguay
"Peru finished in third place for a second successive Copa América tournament after recording a 2-0 victory over Paraguay in Concepción. André Carrillo and Paolo Guerrero scored in the second half as Los Incas, beaten 2-1 by hosts Chile in the semi-finals, ended an impressive campaign on a winning note. The deadlock was broken shortly after half time, Sporting Lisbon's Carrillo volleying home from the edge of the box after a corner had only been half-cleared by Paraguay's defence. La Albirroja looked certain to grab an equaliser in the 68th minute, only for Carlos Ascues to produce a brilliant last-gasp challenge that stopped Édgar Benítez knocking in a low cross. Instead it was Peru who scored the all-important second goal. Guerrero was on hand to sweep home a ball from the right in the closing minutes, his fourth of the campaign meaning he is now tied with Chile's Eduardo Vargs as the competition's leading scorer." - Copa America

June 25, 2015 - Paolo Guerrero scores hat-trick in win over Bolivia
"Paolo Guerrero silenced his critics with a hat-trick as Peru overcame Bolivia 3-1 to set up a Copa America semi-final clash against hosts Chile.... Guerrero, however, proved his worth with his second Copa America hat-trick as Peru earned back-to-back semi-final appearances, having reached the final four in Argentina in 2011, and a showdown with Jorge Sampaoli's impressive side. Marcelo Martins Moreno pulled one back from the penalty spot late on but the result was already beyond doubt thanks to Guerrero's heroics. The Flamengo striker, who claimed a three-goal haul against Venezuela four years ago, scored two in three first-half minutes to put the game beyond Mauricio Soria's men after just 23 minutes. He completed his hat-trick and a memorable performance with 16 minutes remaining as he moved second on Peru's all-time goalscoring charts with 24, alongside Teodoro Fernandez." - Goal

June 18, 2015 - Claudio Pizarro scores in win over Venezuela
"Claudio Pizarro’s second-half goal earned Peru a crucial 1-0 victory over Venezuela which reinvigorates their hopes of qualifying for the knock-out stages of the Copa América. The veteran striker, 36, struck with just under 20 minutes remaining to settle a hard-fought encounter at the Estadio Elías Figueroa Brander in Valparaíso.... Pizarro made no mistake when the ball broke invitingly for him in the box and he thumped home a left-footed effort for what would prove the game’s solitary goal." - Copa America

November 18, 2014 - Carlos Ascues scores brace in win over Paraguay
"Carlos Ascues’ brace saw Peru come from behind to defeat Paraguay 2-1 in Lima on Tuesday, despite ending the match with only nine men on the field. Victor Genes' men led courtesy of Roque Santa Cruz's deflected strike late in the first half, before the hosts had striker Paolo Guerrero sent off in the 67th minute. But a stunning cameo from substitute Ascues saw the Peruvians steal victory in front of their home fans. Ascues equalised when put through by Cristian Benavente moments after gracing the field in the 72nd minute, before the Universidad San Martin man struck the winner eight minutes later." - Copa America

October 14, 2014 - Carlos Ascues scores in win over Guatemala
Peru returned to winning ways with a scrappy 1-0 victory over Guatemala in a friendly in Lima on Tuesday. Carlos Ascues' fine first-half effort was all Pablo Bengoechea's men needed to edge to victory at the Estadio Alejandro Villanueva.... Peru went ahead in the 35th minute. Andre Carrillo played a square pass to Ascues, who fired a powerful 25-yard drive into the bottom corner despite the scratchy surface." - Sportal

September 9, 2014 - Callens & Guerrero score in win over Qatar
Peru scored twice in the last six minutes to clinch a 2-0 friendly victory against 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar on Tuesday.... The hosts held their own until the 84th minute when Alexander Callens headed home from close range. Paolo Guerrero then capped a lively performance for Pablo Bengoechea's men by making sure of the win in the closing stages, as Peru racked up a third straight victory.... The match appeared to be heading for a draw until Callens intervened. Burhan could only parry Guerrero's thumping back-post header and Callens was on hand to nod home the follow up. Guerrero then made sure of the win two minutes from time with a well-placed left-footed shot from the edge of the area." - Soccerway

September 4, 2014 - Callens & Zambrano score in win over Iraq
"Peru's return to winning ways continued on Thursday as they picked up a 2-0 friendly victory over Iraq in Dubai. The South Americans had gone eight matches without a win before beating Panama last month, but made it two wins from two at the Dubai Club Stadium. Iraq made a slow start and fell behind to an Alexander Callens header in the 18th minute. The defender did well to meet the ball from a corner, but the last touch appeared to come off Iraq's Mustafa Nadhim, with goalkeeper Jalal Hassan Hachim in no-man's land. Peru's advantage was doubled eight minutes later when Carlos Zambrano powered home a header." - Soccerway
