Austria Men's National Soccer Team News

September 8, 2015 - Martin Harnik scores brace in win over Sweden
"Sweden 1-4 Austria... Austria did more than the necessary to reach UEFA EURO 2016. All they required in Solna was one point but Marcel Koller's pacesetters took all three – and left Sweden in a precarious position in qualifying Group G. David Alaba has a knack of scoring early penalties against Sweden in qualification. He did so when the sides drew 1–1 in Vienna, and he did it again exactly a year later at the Friends Arena after Kim Källström had tripped Zlatko Junuzovic inside the Swedish penalty area. The ninth-minute breakthrough was the cue for Austria both to qualify and to clinch the group.... With Sweden dominating but creating few clear chances, Austria shocked the home crowd once more. Austria skipper Christian Fuchs's long throw was nodded on by Marc Janko, and before any Swedish defender could get to the ball, Martin Harnik sneaked in to head in from close range.... Home coach Erik Hamrén added a third forward, bringing on Isaac Kiese Thelin, yet instead of getting one back Sweden conceded again. Fuchs found Alaba who slid a ball into the Swedish box, where Janko escaped the attentions of Andreas Granqvist to make it 3–0.... As many of the home fans made early exits, Almer once again resisted as a double chance fell to Berg and Emil Forsberg. Behind Almer's goal stood the visiting supporter, singing "Frankreich hier kommen wir" (France, here we come) and they had another goal to celebrate through Harnik." - UEFA

September 5, 2015 - Zlatko Junuzovic scores in win over Moldova
"Austria 1-0 Moldova. Zlatko Junuzovic scored the winner as Austria went seven points clear at the top of Group G, a narrow victory against Moldova edging them one step closer to qualification for UEFA EURO 2016.... Alaba, the Bayern München midfielder, was not disheartened and combined well with Marc Janko moments later, unleashing a fierce drive which keeper Ilie Cebanu fumbled. Junuzovic seized upon the loose ball and slotted in to send the crowd home happy." - UEFA

June 14, 2015 - Marc Janko scores in win over Russia
"Marc Janko's acrobatic strike earned Austria a 1-0 win against Russia that strengthens their position atop UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying Group G.... Austria took the lead on 33 minutes after Russia were guilty of failing to clear the danger from their penalty area. The ball dropped to Sydney FC forward Janko, who found the net with a spectacular left-footed overhead kick." - UEFA

March 27, 2015 - Harnik, Janko, Alaba, Junuzovic & Arnautovic score in 5-0 win over Liechtenstein
"Austria remain clear in UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying Group G after victory against neighbours Liechtenstein in Vaduz.... The deadlock was broken in the 14th minute when Martin Harnik played a neat one-two with Zlatko Junuzovic, advanced into the box and shot past Peter Jehle. Two minutes later Marc Janko made it two, tapping in a centre from the left by Marko Arnautovic, who had been set on his way by a perfect ball from David Alaba. Jehle conceded a penalty just past the half-hour when he upended Junuzovic but Alaba put it wide. Alaba did get his goal in the 59th minute, picking up a Christian Fuchs pass outside the box, turning and sending in a looping shot that eluded the dive of Jehle. With 16 minutes left Janko teed up Junuzovic for the fourth and Arnautovic half-volleyed a fifth." - UEFA

November 15, 2014 - Rubin Okotie scores in win over Russia
"Substitute Rubin Okotie scored the winner for Austria in a 1-0 win over Russia on Saturday that gives his team a five-point lead at the top of the European Championship qualifying Group G. Okotie, who replaced Marc Janko in the 59th, rounded off a counterattack in the 73rd after he was left unmarked in front of Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev. Austria has 10 points, with Russia and Sweden sharing second place with five points." - Miami Herald

November 7, 2014 - Veli Kavlak called up to replace injured David Alaba
"Austria coach Marcel Koller has called up Besiktas midfielder Veli Kavlak as a replacement for David Alaba for a European Championship qualifier against Russia next week and a friendly against Brazil. Alaba will be out for several weeks following knee surgery on Friday, two days after hurting his cruciate ligaments and meniscus in Bayern Munich's 2-0 Champions League victory over Roma. Kavlak, who has one goal in 30 matches since his debut in 2007, hasn't played for Austria since a 1-1 draw in a friendly against Uruguay in March." - News Tribune

October 12, 2014 - Rubin Okotie scores in win over Montenegro
"Austria moved clear at the top of the Group G standings in Euro 2016 qualifying as they edged out Montenegro 1-0 at home. Rubin Okotie's first-half strike was all that separated the teams on the night in Vienna, but it was enough to send Austria two points clear with Russia being held by Moldova in Moscow.... The breakthrough came in the 24th minute when Arnautovic crossed for Okotie to finish from close range." - ESPN

October 9, 2014 - David Alaba & Marc Janko score in win over Moldova
"Moldova 1-2 Austria: Marc Janko scored Austria's winner but was later sent off after David Alaba and Alexandru Dedov had swapped first-half penalties.... Austria could scarcely have begun better at the Zimbru Stadium, and Zlatko Junuzovic had already drawn a decent stop from home goalkeeper Ilie Cebanu by the time David Alaba opened the scoring in the 11th minute. Ion Jardan was penalised for pulling back Janko and Alaba tucked the penalty into the corner of the net, his second goal in as many qualifying games.... Ioniţa might have turned the match on its head, volleying wide, although it was a busy end to the first half for Cebanu, who saved from Alaba and Prödl in quick succession. The keeper was beaten again six minutes after the restart, the towering Janko heading in Christian Fuchs's corner at the near post to restore Austria's lead." - UEFA
