Fred Mitchell Award September 2014 Recognizees, part 3

The Fred Mitchell Award recognized 24 place-kickers for their excellence on the football field and in the community during the month of September.

A blue-ribbon Selection Committee evaluates place-kickers that are nominated by their schools. Members of the Pro and/or College Football Hall of Fame on the Selection Committee include Tom Beck, Kevin Butler, Paul Hornung, Marv Levy, Steve McMichael, Don Pierson and Gale Sayers. Former football players and others that are active in their communities are also on the Selection Committee including Carl Allegretti, Sergio Castillo, Sean Gothier, Teddy Greenstein, Michael Husted, Dan Jiggetts, Rick Kolaczewski, Connie Kowal, Greg Loberg, Tom Lynch, Carol Monroe, Jeff Michalczyk, Mark Murphy, Patrick Murray, Rob Perry, Michael Ritchey, Jeff Schebler, Caroline Schrenker, Jay Sebben, Bob Thomas, Wolfe Tone, Todd Wilkins, Gary Zauner and Rob Zvonar. There are 12 former college or NFL place-kickers on the Selection Committee, including Schebler (the inaugural Fred Mitchell Award recipient in 2009 and the highest-scoring place-kicker in NCAA history at any level), Lynch (two-time recipient of the Award and the kicker on the 2011 NAIA National Champion Saint Xavier University Cougars), Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicker Murray (whose 25 FG’s in 2012 were just one shy of the all-time FCS record set by Nevada’s Tony Zendejas) and Castillo (the first Division II kicker to win the Award and who made 62 of 79 career field goals and 251 of 255 extra points).

AVERY LLEWELLYN Colorado School of Mines – Division II 
Junior from Durango, CO….leads the team in scoring with 46 points from 9 of 11 FG’s and 19 of 20 PAT’s…. scored 12 points in 48-21 win over Black Hills State on September 27 including 51-yard FG as time expired in the first half….scored 14 points in 46-0 win over William Jewell on September 13….averaging 64 yards on 21 kickoffs….Project Merry Christmas volunteer in Durango where he worked with Durango Fire Department to deliver gifts to local families 

ABDUL MAHDI Saint Xavier University (Illinois) - NAIA 
Freshman from Chicago, IL….leads the Cougars in scoring with 28 points from 4 of 5 FG’s and 16 of 18 PAT’s…. scored 7 points in 19-14 upset win at #15 (Division II) University of Indianapolis on September 13….named Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Midwest League Special Teams Player of the Week twice in September (September 15 and September 22)….averaging 55 yards on 26 kickoffs….volunteered to help paint his high school alma mater in Chicago, Bogan High School….recently spent a day volunteering to clean-up Marquette Park, the largest park on the Southwest side of Chicago at 323 acres 

MICHAEL MARANDO Fordham University (New York) – FCS 
Senior from Brooklyn, NY….2nd on the team in scoring with 46 points from 7 of 10 FG’s and 25 of 25 PAT’s….scored 11 points in 49-7 win over Columbia on September 20….averaging 57 yards on 38 kickoffs….worked with Habitat for Humanity Westchester in Breezy Point, N.Y. (close to his home in Brooklyn) as part of Sandy Saturday’s, helping the neighborhood recover from Hurricane Sandy (cleaned up debris, helped rebuild houses and more)… participated with P. O. T. S. (Part of the Solution) program serving lunch to homeless people and those who could not afford every meal of the day while also assisting in the P.O.T.S. pantry… participated with the Reach Out and Read program which seeks to provide parents/guardians and children with the knowledge, support, and materials necessary to make books a part of their lives (read stories aloud to children in the waiting area) 

DEREK MAURER Bucknell University (Pennsylvania) – FCS 
Senior from Piscataway, NJ….3rd on the Bison in scoring with 18 points from 2 of 4 FG’s and 12 of 16 PAT’s….made career-long 45-yard FG at Sacred Heart on September 20….averaging 60 yards on 22 kickoffs….named a semifinalist for the 2014 Campbell Trophy presented by the National Football Foundation….began a student-run consulting program that takes students who have an interest in a subject to help them apply their knowledge in a professional setting in the community ... program started at Bucknell and he is hoping it will expand to other schools in the future ... member of the Lewisburg Downtown Partnership's Business Innovation Committee 

CODY NUZZO California University of Pennsylvania – Division II 
Senior from Bradford, PA….leads the team in scoring with 40 points from 8 of 10 FG’s and 16 of 16 PAT’s….40 points ranks 1st among PSAC kickers and 5th in Division II….scored career-high 15 points in 33-24 win over Virginia State on September 6….set school record with a 50-yard FG as time expired to force OT in 24-21 loss at nationally-ranked Bloomsburg on September 13….tied career-best by making all 8 PAT’s in 56-34 win at Shippensburg on September 20….247 career points is 1st in school history for kickers….holds all-time school records with 151 PAT’s made, 36 FG’s made and 55 FG’s attempted….averaging 61 yards on 28 kickoffs….FCA Campus President for three years….mentored area church youth group on a weekly basis…offered summer lessons to high school kickers in the Pittsburgh area…Hammer Kicking Academy instructor for three years in Buffalo 

TOM OBARSKI Concordia University St. Paul (Minnesota) – Division II 
Senior from Burnsville, MN….leads the team in scoring with 31 points from 7 of 8 FG’s and 10 of 10 PAT’s….scored 14 points in 44-3 win over Minnesota Crookston on September 27 including making all 3 FG’s from 45, 47 and 48 yards….14 points is 2nd most in school history by a kicker also earned NSIC Special Teams Player of the Week honors….3 FG’s tied school record and NSIC single game high this season…set school record in September with 33 career FG’s made….has scored 200 points in career….ranks 3rd among NSIC kickers with 7.8 points per game…tied for league lead in FG’s made and FG %....averaging 61 yards on 20 kickoffs….River Valley Church youth teacher….on-campus ministries and Bible study leader….drug education mentor to middle school children….high school camp volunteer….Feed My Starving Children volunteer…church student leader….volunteers for small group activities at church….served on overseas missions trip….helped raise over $6,000 for tsunami relief fund in Japan…supported and raised funds for Project Rescue 

MICHAEL SCHMADEKE University of Northern Iowa - FCS 
Junior from Waterloo, IA….leads the Panthers in scoring with 51 points from 12 of 12 FG’s and 15 of 15 PAT’s….scored career-high 20 points including 5 FG’s in 50-7 win over Tennessee Tech on September 27….scored previous career-high 14 points including career-long 43-yard FG in 46-7 win over Northern Colorado on September 20….made three FG’s (36, 37 and 38 yards) against the University of Iowa on August 30….averaging 63 yards on 29 kickoffs…UNI Dance Marathon volunteer to raise money and awareness for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals…avid Special Olympics volunteer throughout college….Country View Care Center volunteer 

MASON STUDER Christopher Newport University (Virginia) – Division III 
Senior from Norfolk, VA….2nd on the team in scoring with 26 points from 4 of 5 FG’s and 14 of 16 PAT’s…. scored 7 points in 31-28 win over North Carolina Wesleyan on September 18….scored 9 points in 51-48 double OT win over Methodist on September 27….volunteered in the fall with Fear 2 Freedom, which is an initiative that partners with universities and a local hospital to provide essential after-care for victims of sexual assault….youth football volunteer in the summer including instructing kickers
