Paraguay Men's National Soccer Team News

June 27, 2015 - Paraguay advances on penalty kicks over Brazil
"Derlis González fired Paraguay into a Copa América semi-final showdown against Argentina, converting the crucial spot-kick to defeat Brazil 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in Concepción. Dunga’s men suffered a repeat of their 2011 Copa nightmare, when they crashed out to the same opponents in the last eight of the competition, with Everton Ribeiro and Douglas Costa both missing from 12 yards on this occasion. Roque Santa Cruz had the chance to send his side through to Tuesday’s last-four encounter on the same ground, but could only blaze his effort wildly over the bar, leaving González, who had also scored from the spot in normal time, to assume the mantle of his nation’s hero. The Seleção had forged ahead in the 15th minute when Robinho swept home from close range after new Liverpool signing Roberto Firmino allowed Dani Alves’ low cross from the right to run past him at the near post." - Copa America

June 16, 2015 - Édgar Benítez scores in win over Jamaica
"A fluke goal from Édgar Benítez proved enough for Paraguay to edge out Group B rivals Jamaica by a 1-0 scoreline in Antofagasta. The forward was in the right place to profit from an error by Jamaica goalkeeper Duwayne Kerr, who headed an attempted clearance directly against the onrushing player. Stranded outside of his area, Kerr could only watch on as the ball trickled into the back of his unguarded net, giving Paraguay a deserved half-time lead." - Copa America

June 13, 2015 - Lucas Barrios scores equalizer in draw with Argentina
"Paraguay produced an outstanding second-half fightback to earn an unlikely 2-2 draw against Argentina on Saturday night. Two goals in the space of eight first-half minutes from Sergio Agüero and Lionel Messi (penalty) looked to have put Gerardo Martino’s men in complete control at Estadio La Portada in La Serena as they totally dominated proceedings. But Paraguay proved a rejuvenated outfit after the interval and forced their way back into the contest when Nelson Valdez crashed home a spectacular long-range effort just before the hour.... It looked like Argentina had done enough to escape with the points, but in the final minute of regulation time substitute Lucas Barrios slammed home a low left-footed shot following a free-kick to earn Ramón Díaz's side a share of the spoils." - Copa America

March 12, 2015 - roster updates
"Coach Ramón Díaz has named his first Paraguay squad for the forthcoming friendlies at the end of this month. However, at this point, the Albirroja supremo has only announced the foreign-based players in his party. Amongst the stand-out names in the initial group are forwards Lucas Barrios and Raúl Bobadilla. Barrios – who now plays his football in France for Montpellier – won the last of his 23 caps in November 2011, playing in a 2-0 World Cup qualifying defeat against Chile.... Argentina-born Bobadilla is called up for the first time, having only recently taken up Paraguayan nationality through his parents, who were born in the country. Bobadilla is on the books of Bundesliga outfit Augsburg and has seven goals to his credit this season. Other notable inclusions are veteran duo Roque Santa Cruz – who recently moved to Mexico’s Cruz Azul – and Colo Colo goalkeeper Justo Villar." - Copa America

November 14, 2014 - Angel Romero & Derlis Gonzalez score in win over Peru
"A late Derlis Gonzalez penalty helped Paraguay to a 2-1 win over Peru in their friendly in Luque on Friday. The two nations are on a journey towards the Copa America in Chile starting in June, and Paraguay took the most out of the contest - after Angel Romero's deflected goal was cancelled out by a Paolo Guerrero header in the second half, before Gonzalez stepped up to convert late on. Victor Yotun threw his arm at Oscar Ruiz's goal-bound header in second-half injury time, and referee Ricardo Marques Ribeiro rightly showed the defender a red card - and pointed to the spot. Basel man Gonzalez - a late substitute - finished clinically into the bottom left corner past Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese in the 92nd minute. Earlier, Paraguay took the lead when one of Victor Genes' half-time substitutes, Celso Ortiz, broke free on the left flank - and after his initial cross was blocked, he squared a pass for Romero. Ortiz's fellow substitute did the rest, firing a powerful shot on the target - which deflected off a Peru defender and past stranded Gallese in the 70th minute for the 22-year-old's first international goal. Peru's response was emphatic, Guerrero picked out by Andre Carrillo with a pin-point cross - and the skipper duly nodded home his 21st international goal with consummate ease." - FourFourTwo
