Vietnam Men's National Soccer Team News

September 8, 2015 - Dinh Tien Thanh & Tran Phi Son score in win over Taiwan
"Vietnam clinched their first win in the second round of the 2018 FIFA World Cup and 2019 AFC Asian Cup joint-qualifiers after beating Chinese Taipei 2-1 on Tuesday. The game at the Taipei City Municipal Stadium looked destined for a 1-1 draw until Tran Phi Son gave Vietnam a last-minute victory in second-half stoppage time to help the Vietnamese clinch their first three points in the second qualifying round. After a goalless first half,  Vietnam drew first blood on 53 minutes thanks to Dinh Tien Thanh. However, Chinese Taipei levelled the tie when substitute Wu Chun Ching found the equaliser on 84 minutes, before Tran regained the lead for Vietnam two minutes into additional time at the end of the second half." - WCQ

December 7, 2014 - Vo Huy Toan & Nguyen Van Quyet score in win over Malaysia
"Vietnam have one foot in the 2014 AFF Championship final after goals by Vo Huy Toan and Nguyen Van Quyet secured the 2008 champions a 2-1 away win over Malaysia in the first leg of their semi-final on Sunday. The home side were ahead with a Safiq Rahim penalty but Huy Toan levelled in the 32nd minute before Van Quyet fired home the winner on the hour to reward a fine performance at a rain-soaked Shah Alam Stadium." - FIFA

November 28, 2014 - Thinh, Tuan & Luong score in win over Philippines
"Co-hosts Vietnam claimed top spot in Group A and advanced to the semi-finals of the 2014 AFF Championship with a 3-1 win over the Philippines at My Dinh Stadium on Friday. A first-half strike by Ngo Hoang Thinh and goals by Vu Minh Tuan and Pham Thanh Luong after the interval meant that both teams went through to the last four.... Vietnam entered their match against the previously-perfect Azkals with the knowledge that a draw would be good enough to send them through. But roared on by a large partisan home crowd, they took the lead after just nine minutes when Hoang Thinh's low shot from distance caught out goalkeeper Patrick Deyto who allowed the ball to slip through his grasp. The 2008 AFF champions extended their lead five minute into the second half when Hoang Thinh played a fine through ball to Minh Tuan who rifled a shot past Deyto. They added a third three minutes later through a spectacular long range effort by Thanh Luong but the Philippines pulled a goal back shortly after that when substitute Paul Mulders flicked the ball in from close range." - FIFA

November 25, 2014 - Tuan, Tai & Hung score in win over Laos
"Vietnam put themselves in pole position to join the Filipinos in the semis after moving second in the group with a 3-0 triumph over Laos, who were eliminated in the process. Vu Minh Tuan fired the hosts ahead in the 27th minute when he made a late run into the box to meet Le Tan Tai’s visionary through-pass, and slid in to steer his shot into the bottom corner. However, they had to wait until the 84th minute before a second goal arrived as Tan Tai fired away a fierce shot that was parried by Seng Athit Somvang into the path of Le Cong Vinh, who made no mistake with a tap in from a couple of yards out. With two minutes remaining, the Vietnamese went on to seal the victory as Nguyen Van Quyet made his way past Bounthavy Sipasong and whipped in a cross for Nguyen Huy Hung to meet with a firm volley into the back of the net." - AFC

November 16, 12014 - Quan, Quyet & Thinh score in win over Malaysia
"Malaysia suffered another crushing blow to their confidence when they lost 3-1 to Vietnam in Hanoi on Sunday night in Dollah Salleh's final warm-up game before the AFF Suzuki Cup later this month.... Things started brightly for Malaysia when Johor Darul Takzim's strike duo of Norshahrul Idlan Talaha and Amri Yahyah showed flashes of brilliance, with the latter opening the scoring in the 23rd minute to give the visitors the lead going into half-time. But, barely two minutes into the second period, Vietnam levelled the game with a superb strike by Mac Hong Quan. Two minutes later, Dollah had to reshuffle his pack when defender Muslim Ahmad received a red card for pulling back Hong Quan and the writing was on the wall as the home team pounced on their numerical advantage to take the lead through a spot-kick from Nguyen Van. Toshiya Miura's men continued to surge forward despite having the lead and the comeback was completed in the 81st minute when Ngo Hoang Thinh latched onto a rebound after goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat parried the initial shot from Vo Huy Toan." - ESPN
