Fred Mitchell Outstanding Place-Kicker Award 2014 Finalists

Ten finalists have been named for the 2014 Fred Mitchell Award, which is provided to the Football Championship Subdivision, Division II, Division III, NAIA or NJCAA place-kicker that excels on the football field and in the community. The place-kicker chosen for this Award will be announced on December 18, and he will be honored on February 16, 2015 at the National Football Foundation Chicago Chapter Awards Ceremony at Halas Hall in suburban Chicago.

The breakdown of the 10 finalists is as follows:
  • Collegiate Division – 5 FCS, 4 Division II, 0 Division III, 1 NAIA, 0 NJCAA
  • State – the place-kickers play at schools located in 9 different states
  • Year – 5 Seniors, 2 Juniors, 2 Sophomores, 1 Freshman 
In alphabetical order, the 10 finalists for the 2014 Fred Mitchell Award are:

JONAH BOWMAN Colgate University (New York) – FCS 
Sophomore from Wyomissing, PA….led the Raiders in scoring with 69 points from 14 of 16 FG’s and 27 of 28 PAT’s… scored 7 points including game-winning 23-yard FG with 3 seconds left in the game in 31-30 win over Princeton on October 11….14 FG’s made is school single season record….set school record with 9 consecutive FG’s made in a season until missing at Yale on October 18 and has made his last 2 FG’s….averaged 57 yards on 54 kickoffs….member of local chapter of Uplifting Athletes which helps raise money toward a cure for Ependymoma, a rare type of brain cancer ... team hosted Colin Hayward, 7, and his family for the second year in a row in October’s game against Holy Cross ... helped team raise more than $20,000 over the last two years ... participates in the team's annual Lift for Life each spring that also raises money for Ependymoma 

PAUL GRAHAM Wayne State University (Michigan) – Division II 
Freshman from Commerce Township, MI….2nd on the team in scoring with 84 points from 14 of 15 FG’s and 42 of 43 PAT’s….Second Team All-GLIAC….scored 12 points in 33-30 loss against Northern Michigan on October 18 including season-long 47-yard FG….made his first 42 PAT’s before a low snap on the final PAT of the season….packaged food at Gleaners Food Bank which is the largest not-for-profit organization providing food for hungry neighbors in Detroit and surrounding cities ... served as a coach in the NFL Play 60 Youth Camp that was held at Wayne State ... tutored fellow student-athletes in English during study table….participated in multiple Warrior Wednesdays where student-athletes distribute breakfast to fellow students and instructors as they arrive on campus 

CONNER HOLLABAUGH West Texas A&M University – Division II 
Sophomore from Amarillo, TX….finished 2nd on the team in scoring with 99 points from 17 of 19 FG’s and 48 of 50 PAT’s…named Second Team All-Conference…went 17 of 19 in field goals in his first year as the primary kicker replacing Fred Mitchell Award Winner Sergio Castillo from last season…made career-long 55-yard FG against Texas A&M-Kingsville on October 25 earning LSC Special Teams Player of the Week accolades…recorded three made FG twice this season and scored a career-high 16 points against McMurry on November 8 with 3 FG’s and 7 of 7 PATs…made his final 33 PATs and final 6 FG’s…ranks fifth nationally in FG % and leads the conference and is ninth in FG’s per game at 1.55…participated in Adopt a Highway with the football team for highway cleanup…worked numerous track meets helping with the discus in charting results…reads to elementary school children….talked to different schools for Field of Faith in Amarillo for FCA 

ADAM KELLER North Dakota State University – FCS 
Senior from Lewisberry, PA….leads the Bison in scoring with 122 points from 25 of 29 FG’s and 47 of 47 PAT’s…. scored 9 points in 27-24 playoff win over South Dakota State on December 6….scored 17 points in 47-7 win over South Dakota on October 25….set school record with 5 FG’s made against Montana…volunteer coach for Tri-City seventh grade soccer team…Rosewood Nursing Home volunteer…middle school tutor to special needs students….Special Olympics volunteer….Blue Key Honor Society Member 

MICHAEL MARANDO Fordham University (New York) – FCS 
Senior from Brooklyn, NY….2nd on the team in scoring with 127 points from 21 of 27 FG’s and 64 of 66 PAT’s….led Patriot League and 13th in FCS with 1.33 FG’s per game in regular season….scored 14 points in 44-22 playoff win over Sacred Heart on November 29….47 career FG’s is school record Patriot League record….283 career points is kick scoring record in the Patriot League….64 PAT’s beat his school record of 63 set in 2013….127 kicking points is among top 5 in school history in a season…142 career PAT’s is school record….averaged 58 yards on 103 kickoffs….worked with Habitat for Humanity Westchester in Breezy Point, N.Y. (close to his home in Brooklyn) as part of Sandy Saturday’s, helping the neighborhood recover from Hurricane Sandy (cleaned up debris, helped rebuild houses and more)… participated with P. O. T. S. (Part of the Solution) program serving lunch to homeless people and those who could not afford every meal of the day while also assisting in the P.O.T.S. pantry… participated with the Reach Out and Read program which seeks to provide parents/guardians and children with the knowledge, support, and materials necessary to make books a part of their lives (read stories aloud to children in the waiting area) 

RYAN McCRUM Southeast Missouri State University – FCS 
Sophomore from St. Charles, MO….led the team in scoring with 94 points from 18 of 23 FG’s and 40 of 41 PAT’s….set school record with 18 FG’s in a season….led Ohio Valley Conference in FG’s and kick scoring….named Conference Specialist of the Week on September 14….scored 8 points in 28-21 win over nationally-ranked Tennessee State on October 4 including career-long 55-yard FG….made 50+ yard FG’s in first three games in October…made 51-yard FG to force a 2nd OT at Murray State on October 11….made 42 consecutive PAT’s before missing last PAT of the season….averaged 62 yards on 67 kickoffs….actively involved in local Pink Up Cape Breast Cancer Awareness initiative….assists Southeast’s counseling services to help raise awareness and sexual assault prevention 

SCOTT MILLER University of Indianapolis – Division II 
Senior from Indianapolis, IN….led the team in scoring with 91 points from 16 of 20 FG’s and 43 of 43 PAT’s….Great Lakes Valley Conference Special Teams Player of the Week in 2014 and 2012….school’s all-time leading scorer with 342 career points, topping all active Division II kickers….led Conference in FG’s made, FG %, PAT’s made and PAT %....broke his own record with 16 FG’s in a season…has made a school-record 90 straight PAT’s….made 35-yard game-winning FG in the 4th Otto defeat in-state rival Saint Joseph’s….had double-digit point totals in 4 straight games…averaged 55 yards on 64 kickoffs….spent time with patients at Riley’s Hospital for Children…Habitat for Humanity volunteer….food pantry volunteer 

TOM OBARSKI Concordia University St. Paul (Minnesota) – Division II 
Senior from Burnsville, MN….led the team in scoring with 81 points from 18 of 21 FG’s and 27 of 27 PAT’s….First Team All-NSIC….scored 13 points in 37-34 OT win over Upper Iowa on October 25….tied Upper Iowa at 34-34 in fourth quarter with 56-yard FG then made game-winning 42-yard FG in OT….56-yard FG was the longest in the country this season….44 career FG’s made and 18 FG’s in a season are school records….had a streak making 14 straight FG’s….has scored 250 points in career….tied school record by making 3 FG’s in 4 career games of which 3 games have been in 2014…. averaged 61 yards on 53 kickoffs….River Valley Church youth teacher….on-campus ministries and Bible study leader….drug education mentor to middle school children….high school camp volunteer….Feed My Starving Children volunteer…church student leader….volunteers for small group activities at church….served on overseas missions trip….helped raise over $6,000 for tsunami relief fund in Japan…supported and raised funds for Project Rescue 

MICHAEL SCHMADEKE University of Northern Iowa - FCS 
Junior from Waterloo, IA….led the Panthers in scoring with 132 points from 27 of 29 FG’s and 51 of 53 PAT’s….First Team All-Conference….finished the regular season ranked 1st in the conference in kick scoring and FG’s made….set season scoring record in 2014….scored 14 points in 44-10 playoff win over Stephen F. Austin on November 29….scored 11 points in 23-3 win over then-#1 ranked North Dakota State on November 8 to snap the Bison longest winning streak in college football at any level….scored 8 points including career-long 49-yard FG in 27-13 win over Western Illinois on October 25….scored 9 points in 27-16 win over South Dakota on October 11….set school record with 20 points including making all 5 FG’s in 50-7 win over Tennessee Tech on September 27 and earned National Kicker of the Week honors…. averaged 62 yards on 90 kickoffs…UNI Dance Marathon volunteer to raise money and awareness for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals…avid Special Olympics volunteer throughout college….Country View Care Center volunteer 

MIKE SELF Cumberland University (Tennessee) – NAIA 
Junior from Lebanon, TN….led the team in scoring with 57 points from 7 of 9 FG’s and 36 of 38 PAT’s…. Mid-South Conference Special Teams Player of the Week three times during the season….averaged 55 yards on 61 kickoffs….helped install water purification systems for needy families in Sneedville for a not-for-profit called Run4Water….Child Advocacy Chocolate Affair volunteer on campus….Special Olympics volunteer supervisor at Tennessee Tech….volunteered at rodeo for special needs children…volunteer Official for a Success Martial Arts Center tournament….participated in Commanders in Action Day…helped with the Wilson County Health Council Special Needs event for children….volunteer to help with USS Hancock Navy Reunion
