January 31, 2015 - Javier Balboa scores late brace in win over Tunisia
"Javier Balboa came to Equatorial Guinea's rescue on Saturday by scoring twice as the host nation came from behind to beat Tunisia 2-1 after extra time in the quarter-final of the Africa Cup of Nations. A dull first half passed largely without incident, but Tunisia went ahead through Ahmed Akaichi in the 70th minute. Tunisia looked destined for a place in the semi-finals until Hamza Mathlouthi was controversially deemed to have fouled Ivan Bolado in the penalty area deep into second-half stoppage time. Having looked unlikely to find the net for much of the encounter, Equatorial Guinea drew level when Balboa held his nerve to slot home from the spot. And Balboa delivered the knockout blow 12 minutes into the additional 30 - finding the top right-hand corner with a stunning 25-yard free-kick to send the majority of the Estadio de Bata crowd into raptures." - SoccerWay

January 25, 2015 - Javier Balboa & Salvador Edu score in win over Gabon
"Africa Cup of Nations hosts Equatorial Guinea have beaten Gabon 2-0 in front of a jubilant Bata crowd to reach the last eight of the tournament.... Equatorial Guinea created very little before the break but they were gifted the chance to go in front 10 minutes after the interval when Lloyd Palun fouled Javier Balboa in the box. Balboa took the penalty himself and made no mistake from 12 yards to send the crowd into raptures. Balboa had the chance to make it two with time winding down, but he missed the opportunity to give Gabon, who only needed a draw, hope of progressing. However, it would be the hosts who scored the second goal late on when Salvador Edu scrambled home from close range, sparking a pitch invasion from the delirious supporters." - Sports Mole

January 8, 2015 - AFCON roster named
"Africa Cup of Nations hosts Equatorial Guinea have included 14 players who were born in Spain in their final 23-man squad for the tournament. They have in recent years included imports from other countries but were expelled from the Nations Cup qualifiers in July for using ineligible Cameroon-born player Thierry Fidieu. However, they were restored t the event in November when they agreed to take over as hosts from Morocco, who wanted the finals postponed over their fears of the potential spread of Ebola. New Equatorial Guinea coach Esteban Becker was appointed on Tuesday and will have less than two weeks to prepare the squad for their opening Group A match against Congo in Bata on 17 January. His squad includes teenage goalkeeper Aitor Embela, who plays for Malaga's youth team, Ruben Belima from Real Madrid's reserves and Ivan Salvador, a 19-year-old from Valencia B." - BBC
