February 27, 2015 - kicker Drake Hillman switches from soccer
"Drake Hillman, who scored 21 goals in his career at Florida Tech, missed just three of the 12 field goals he took Thursday with the football team. It has been a crazy couple of weeks for the Plymouth, England, native who had no intentions of playing football just a couple of months ago. 'This came out of nowhere,' Hillman said. 'Around the end of February, I got a text saying the football team was looking to see if anyone wanted to try out to kick.' His teammates mentioned it to him because he is out of eligibility in soccer, but has an extra year of eligibility if he changes sports. So Hillman decided to give it a shot." - Florida Today

February 15, 2015 - Katy McClean kicks two conversions & a penalty in win over Italy
Katy Mclean inspired England Women to an important 39-7 victory over Italy at the Twickenham Stoop on her return to the side in the Women's Six Nations. England had the better of the first-half but fell behind to Flavia Severin's try, before hitting back through Alex Matthews and Abbie Scott to lead at the break. Ceri Large extended the lead before Mclean, Hannah Gallagher and Kay Wilson crossed late on as Nicky Ponsford's side condemned Italy to their second consecutive defeat following their opening 30-5 reversal against Ireland. England enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges and were quickly in front, returning fly-half Mclean kicking an easy penalty after four minutes. Mclean should have doubled the lead soon after but dragged another penalty wide as the hosts enjoyed the majority of the early territory and possession." - RBS 6 Nations

NFL Scouting Combine - Days 1 & 2 from the Specialists

The first two days of the NFL Scouting Combine are in the books. Following are some early commentary, thoughts and observations from this year's specialists:

  • Kyle Brindza (Notre Dame): "Off to Indy to fulfill my dreams. Iv prepared and am ready physically and mentally. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers this week. Time to show the league and everyone how iv grown on and off the field."
  • Sam Ficken (Penn State): "Being here is obviously incredible to me. To be able to kick for all 32 teams, you know, all the coaches and GMs are looking at you, evaluating you. That's probably the best opportunity you can get."
  • Josh Lambo (Texas A&M)
  • Justin Manton (Louisiana-Monroe): “I’m left-handed and played baseball, so I can throw a little bit. That’d be cool, rolling out to the left like [Jon] Ryan did.... I’d like to show them that I’m an athlete. I want to be known as an overall football player. That’s what I can show people here.”
  • Jared Roberts (Colorado State): “A lot of people don’t realize we’re in Fort Collins, which still is at altitude but not like Denver. But I’ve had big kicks at sea level, too. We played at San Jose State; I had a 53-yarder there. So, you know, I think I have enough kicks on film to show that I have a big leg in Denver, but also at sea level.”
  • Will Baumann (North Carolina State)
  • Kyle Christy (Florida): "[Caleb Sturgis] just told me everything to expect so that I got here and I wasn’t shocked by anything.... I thought we were going to be able to just sleep in. I don’t know why I thought that but he said to expect them to keep you up pretty late at night and make you wake up pretty early in the morning."
  • Will Johnson (Texas State)
  • Kyle Loomis (Portland State): "[being 27] is kind of a positive. I'm more mature. I've seen a lot of stuff off the field. There's nothing in the game that's going to screw me up. I think it helps, actually."
  • Trevor Pardula (Kansas): “I played soccer my whole life, could always kick farther than almost anyone I played against, so I figured I’d give it a shot. My senior year, my high school team, we went 1-9 so there wasn’t much exposure there.”
  • Bradley Pinion (Clemson): "Last day of prep for the combine in 30 degrees! Living out a dream! Thank you for all the prayers and good wishes! #CombineCountdown."
  • Spencer Roth (Baylor)

Purchase of Ichabods accessories from Amazon helps support Kickology

February 4, 2015 - kicker Perry Schmiedeler signs
"Topeka, Kan. • Washburn Rural High School - Earned first team all-city, all-league punter and placekicker and first team all-state and was named the Kansas Class 6A Specialist of the Year after averaging 40.3 yards per punt while recording 20 touchbacks on kickoffs … also hit 5 of 7 field goal attempts including a long of 42 yards and 24 of 25 point after attempts … named first team all-league and all-city as a junior and was an all-league honorable mention pick as a sophomore." - Ichabods

October 29, 2014 - kicker Justin Linn
After struggling to find the same rhythm that made him one of the best kickers in the conference as a freshman, Washburn’s Justin Linn regained form with a record-tying performance last week. Linn tied a single-game school record with four made field goals in Washburn’s 35-26 loss at Central Oklahoma last Saturday, helping the sophomore get back on track after an inconsistent first half of the season. The Abilene native kept Washburn in the game at UCO, connecting on kicks of 20, 25, 28, and 23 yards before missing attempts of 41 and 52 yards in the fourth quarter. 'I kind of got in a slump in the middle of the season, missing three in a row,' Linn said. 'But I got my rhythm back, made my first four (at UCO). I’m actually disappointed in myself that I missed those two at the end of the game.' Linn, an All-MIAA first-team selection last season, entered the UCO game having made just two of six field goals attempts this season after making 14 of 19 kicks last year, including two kicks from at least 50 yards out." - Topeka Capital-Journal

September 11, 2014 - Justin Linn kicks winning points over Nebraska-Kearney
"Washburn had its fair share of missed opportunities in Thursday’s game at Nebraska-Kearney, but with the game in the balance, the Ichabods found a way to pull out a must-win contest in miserable playing conditions. Justin Linn kicked the game-deciding 34-yard field goal with 8:14 remaining, and the Ichabods held on to claw out a 10-7 victory amid steady rain in Kearney.... A bad snap prevented Washburn from getting a field goal off in the first quarter, and Linn missed a 30-yard field goal with 2:27 remaining in the half. However, Linn came up huge in the clutch, calmly drilling the game-deciding kick. 'I just had to stay loose on the sideline,' Linn said. 'It was just like any other kick. You just have to force all the elements out and take care of what you can control'.” - Topeka Capital-Journal
